1 E ntão respondeu Elifaz, o temanita:

¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered, and said,

2 P orventura responderá o sábio com ciência de vento? E encherá do vento oriental o seu ventre,

Should a wise man utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind?

3 a rgüindo com palavras que de nada servem, ou com razões com que ele nada aproveita?

Should he dispute with useless words and with reasons that are not profitable?

4 N a verdade tu destróis a reverência, e impedes a meditação diante de Deus.

Thou dost also cast off fear and undermine prayer before God.

5 P ois a tua iniqüidade ensina a tua boca, e escolhes a língua dos astutos.

For thy mouth has declared thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.

6 A tua própria boca te condena, e não eu; e os teus lábios testificam contra ti.

Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I; thine own lips shall testify against thee.

7 É s tu o primeiro homem que nasceu? Ou foste dado ã luz antes dos outeiros?

Wast thou born before Adam? Or wast thou formed before the hills?

8 O u ouviste o secreto conselho de Deus? E a ti só reservas a sabedoria?

Hast thou heard the secret of God, that thou dost detain wisdom in thee alone?

9 Q ue sabes tu, que nós não saibamos; que entendes, que não haja em nós?

What dost thou know that we do not? What dost thou understand, which is not in us?

10 C onosco estão os encanecidos e idosos, mais idosos do que teu pai.

Among us are also gray hairs; there are also aged men, much elder than thy father.

11 P orventura fazes pouco caso das consolações de Deus, ou da palavra que te trata benignamente?

Are the consolations of God in such small esteem with thee? Is there by chance any secret thing concerning thee?

12 P or que te arrebata o teu coração, e por que flamejam os teus olhos,

Why does thine heart carry thee away, and why do thine eyes blink,

13 d e modo que voltas contra Deus o teú espírito, e deixas sair tais palavras da tua boca?

that thou dost reply unto God with thy spirit and bring forth such words out of thy mouth?

14 Q ue é o homem, para que seja puro? E o que nasce da mulher, para que fique justo?

What is man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified?

15 E is que Deus não confia nos seus santos, e nem o céu é puro aos seus olhos;

Behold, he puts no trust in his saints, and not even the heavens are clean in his sight.

16 q uanto menos o homem abominável e corrupto, que bebe a iniqüidade como a água?

How much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water?

17 E scuta-me e to mostrarei; contar-te-ei o que tenho visto

¶ Listen to me and I will show thee and declare unto thee that which I have seen,

18 ( o que os sábios têm anunciado e seus pais não o ocultaram;

that which the wise men have told us of their fathers and have not hid it,

19 a os quais somente era dada a terra, não havendo estranho algum passado por entre eles);

unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

20 T odos os dias passa o ímpio em angústia, sim, todos os anos que estão reservados para o opressor.

The wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden from the violent.

21 O sonido de terrores está nos seus ouvidos; na prosperidade lhe sobrevém o assolador.

Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.

22 E le não crê que tornará das trevas, mas que o espera a espada.

He will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword.

23 A nda vagueando em busca de pão, dizendo: Onde está? Bem sabe que o dia das trevas lhe está perto, ã mão.

He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is prepared for him.

24 A medrontam-no a angústia e a tribulação; prevalecem contra ele, como um rei preparado para a peleja.

Tribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

25 P orque estendeu a sua mão contra Deus, e contra o Todo-Poderoso se porta com soberba;

Because he extended his hand against God and strengthens himself against the Almighty,

26 a rremete contra ele com dura cerviz, e com as saliências do seu escudo;

he shall run him through in the neck, upon the thick shoulder pieces of his shields;

27 p orquanto cobriu o seu rosto com a sua gordura, e criou carne gorda nas ilhargas;

for he covered his face with his fatness and made collops of fat on his flanks;

28 e habitou em cidades assoladas, em casas em que ninguem deveria morar, que estavam a ponto de tornar-se em montões de ruínas;

and he dwelt in desolate cities and in houses which no one inhabited, which were in heaps.

29 n ão se enriquecerá, nem subsistirá a sua fazenda, nem se estenderão pela terra as suas possessões.

He shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth.

30 N ão escapará das trevas; a chama do fogo secará os seus ramos, e ao sopro da boca de Deus desaparecerá.

He shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish.

31 N ão confie na vaidade, enganando-se a si mesmo; pois a vaidade será a sua recompensa.

He shall not be established; in vanity he shall err; therefore, he shall be changed into vanity.

32 A ntes do seu dia se cumprirá, e o seu ramo não reverdecerá.

He shall be cut off before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

33 S acudirá as suas uvas verdes, como a vide, e deixará cair a sua flor como a oliveira.

He shall shake off his sour grapes as the vine and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

34 P ois a assembléia dos ímpios é estéril, e o fogo consumirá as tendas do suborno.

For the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

35 C oncebem a malícia, e dão ã luz a iniqüidade, e o seu coração prepara enganos.

They conceive pain and bring forth iniquity, and their belly meditates deceit.
