1 É liphaz de Théman prit la parole et dit:

¶ Then Eliphaz, the Temanite, answered, and said,

2 L e sage répond-il par un vain savoir? Se gonfle-t-il la poitrine du vent d'orient?

Should a wise man utter vain knowledge and fill his belly with the east wind?

3 E st-ce par d'inutiles propos qu'il se défend? Est-ce par des discours qui ne servent à rien?

Should he dispute with useless words and with reasons that are not profitable?

4 T oi, tu détruis même la crainte de Dieu, Tu anéantis tout mouvement de piété devant Dieu.

Thou dost also cast off fear and undermine prayer before God.

5 T on iniquité dirige ta bouche, Et tu prends le langage des hommes rusés.

For thy mouth has declared thine iniquity, and thou hast chosen the tongue of the crafty.

6 C e n'est pas moi, c'est ta bouche qui te condamne. Ce sont tes lèvres qui déposent contre toi.

Thine own mouth shall condemn thee, and not I; thine own lips shall testify against thee.

7 E s-tu né le premier des hommes? As-tu été enfanté avant les collines?

Wast thou born before Adam? Or wast thou formed before the hills?

8 A s-tu reçu les confidences de Dieu? As-tu dérobé la sagesse à ton profit?

Hast thou heard the secret of God, that thou dost detain wisdom in thee alone?

9 Q ue sais-tu que nous ne sachions pas? Quelle connaissance as-tu que nous n'ayons pas?

What dost thou know that we do not? What dost thou understand, which is not in us?

10 I l y a parmi nous des cheveux blancs, des vieillards, Plus riches de jours que ton père.

Among us are also gray hairs; there are also aged men, much elder than thy father.

11 T iens-tu pour peu de chose les consolations de Dieu, Et les paroles qui doucement se font entendre à toi?...

Are the consolations of God in such small esteem with thee? Is there by chance any secret thing concerning thee?

12 O ù ton coeur t'entraîne-t-il, Et que signifie ce roulement de tes yeux?

Why does thine heart carry thee away, and why do thine eyes blink,

13 Q uoi! c'est contre Dieu que tu tournes ta colère Et que ta bouche exhale de pareils discours!

that thou dost reply unto God with thy spirit and bring forth such words out of thy mouth?

14 Q u'est-ce que l'homme, pour qu'il soit pur? Celui qui est né de la femme peut-il être juste?

What is man that he should be clean and that he that is born of a woman should be justified?

15 S i Dieu n'a pas confiance en ses saints, Si les cieux ne sont pas purs devant lui,

Behold, he puts no trust in his saints, and not even the heavens are clean in his sight.

16 C ombien moins l'être abominable et pervers, L'homme qui boit l'iniquité comme l'eau!

How much less the man who is abominable and filthy, who drinks iniquity like water?

17 J e vais te parler, écoute-moi! Je raconterai ce que j'ai vu,

¶ Listen to me and I will show thee and declare unto thee that which I have seen,

18 C e que les sages ont fait connaître, Ce qu'ils ont révélé, l'ayant appris de leurs pères.

that which the wise men have told us of their fathers and have not hid it,

19 A eux seuls appartenait le pays, Et parmi eux nul étranger n'était encore venu.

unto whom alone the earth was given, and no stranger passed among them.

20 L e méchant passe dans l'angoisse tous les jours de sa vie, Toutes les années qui sont le partage de l'impie.

The wicked man travails with pain all his days, and the number of years is hidden from the violent.

21 L a voix de la terreur retentit à ses oreilles; Au sein de la paix, le dévastateur va fondre sur lui;

Fearful sounds are in his ears; in peace the destroyer shall come upon him.

22 I l n'espère pas échapper aux ténèbres, Il voit l'épée qui le menace;

He will not believe that he shall return out of darkness, and he is always watching the sword.

23 I l court çà et là pour chercher du pain, Il sait que le jour des ténèbres l'attend.

He wanders abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? He knows that the day of darkness is prepared for him.

24 L a détresse et l'angoisse l'épouvantent, Elles l'assaillent comme un roi prêt à combattre;

Tribulation and anguish shall make him afraid; they shall prevail against him, as a king ready to the battle.

25 C ar il a levé la main contre Dieu, Il a bravé le Tout Puissant,

Because he extended his hand against God and strengthens himself against the Almighty,

26 I l a eu l'audace de courir à lui Sous le dos épais de ses boucliers.

he shall run him through in the neck, upon the thick shoulder pieces of his shields;

27 I l avait le visage couvert de graisse, Les flancs chargés d'embonpoint;

for he covered his face with his fatness and made collops of fat on his flanks;

28 E t il habite des villes détruites, Des maisons abandonnées, Sur le point de tomber en ruines.

and he dwelt in desolate cities and in houses which no one inhabited, which were in heaps.

29 I l ne s'enrichira plus, sa fortune ne se relèvera pas, Sa prospérité ne s'étendra plus sur la terre.

He shall not become rich, nor shall his strength be established, neither shall he extend his beauty upon the earth.

30 I l ne pourra se dérober aux ténèbres, La flamme consumera ses rejetons, Et Dieu le fera périr par le souffle de sa bouche.

He shall not escape from the darkness; the flame shall dry up his branches, and by the breath of his mouth he shall perish.

31 S 'il a confiance dans le mal, il se trompe, Car le mal sera sa récompense.

He shall not be established; in vanity he shall err; therefore, he shall be changed into vanity.

32 E lle arrivera avant le terme de ses jours, Et son rameau ne verdira plus.

He shall be cut off before his time, and his branch shall not be green.

33 I l sera comme une vigne dépouillée de ses fruits encore verts, Comme un olivier dont on a fait tomber les fleurs.

He shall shake off his sour grapes as the vine and shall cast off his flower as the olive.

34 L a maison de l'impie deviendra stérile, Et le feu dévorera la tente de l'homme corrompu.

For the congregation of the hypocrites shall be made desolate, and fire shall consume the tents of bribery.

35 I l conçoit le mal et il enfante le mal, Il mûrit dans son sein des fruits qui le trompent.

They conceive pain and bring forth iniquity, and their belly meditates deceit.
