1 J ob prit la parole et dit:

¶ And Job answered and said,

2 O n dirait, en vérité, que le genre humain c'est vous, Et qu'avec vous doit mourir la sagesse.

No doubt but ye are the people, and wisdom shall die with you.

3 J 'ai tout aussi bien que vous de l'intelligence, moi, Je ne vous suis point inférieur; Et qui ne sait les choses que vous dites?

But I have a heart as well as you; I am not inferior to you; and who shall not be able to say as much again?

4 J e suis pour mes amis un objet de raillerie, Quand j'implore le secours de Dieu; Le juste, l'innocent, un objet de raillerie!

He who invokes God and he answers him is mocked by his friend; the just and perfect man is laughed to scorn.

5 A u malheur le mépris! c'est la devise des heureux; A celui dont le pied chancelle est réservé le mépris.

The torch is held in low esteem in the thought of him that is prosperous, which was prepared to guard against a slip of the feet.

6 I l y a paix sous la tente des pillards, Sécurité pour ceux qui offensent Dieu, Pour quiconque se fait un dieu de sa force.

¶ The tents of robbers are at ease, and those that provoke God and those who carry gods in their hands live secure.

7 I nterroge les bêtes, elles t'instruiront, Les oiseaux du ciel, ils te l'apprendront;

But ask now the beasts, and they shall teach thee; and the fowls of the heavens, and they shall show thee;

8 P arle à la terre, elle t'instruira; Et les poissons de la mer te le raconteront.

or speak to the earth, and it shall teach thee; the fishes of the sea shall declare it unto thee also.

9 Q ui ne reconnaît chez eux la preuve Que la main de l'Éternel a fait toutes choses?

What thing of all these does not know that the hand of the LORD made them?

10 I l tient dans sa main l'âme de tout ce qui vit, Le souffle de toute chair d'homme.

In his hand is the soul of every living thing and the spirit of all flesh of man.

11 L 'oreille ne discerne-t-elle pas les paroles, Comme le palais savoure les aliments?

Certainly the ear proves words and the mouth tastes foods.

12 D ans les vieillards se trouve la sagesse, Et dans une longue vie l'intelligence.

¶ With the ancient is wisdom; and in length of days intelligence.

13 E n Dieu résident la sagesse et la puissance. Le conseil et l'intelligence lui appartiennent.

With him is wisdom and strength; he has counsel and intelligence.

14 C e qu'il renverse ne sera point rebâti, Celui qu'il enferme ne sera point délivré.

Behold, he shall break down, and it shall not be built again; he shall shut up a man, and no one shall be able to open unto him.

15 I l retient les eaux et tout se dessèche; Il les lâche, et la terre en est dévastée.

Behold, he shall withhold the waters, and they shall dry up; also he shall send them forth, and they shall destroy the earth.

16 I l possède la force et la prudence; Il maîtrise celui qui s'égare ou fait égarer les autres.

With him is strength and existence; he who errs and he who leads astray are his.

17 I l emmène captifs les conseillers; Il trouble la raison des juges.

He causes the counsellors to walk away stripped of counsel and makes the judges to be fools.

18 I l délie la ceinture des rois, Il met une corde autour de leurs reins.

He looses the bond of kings and girds their loins with a girdle.

19 I l emmène captifs les sacrificateurs; Il fait tomber les puissants.

He leads priests away spoiled and overthrows the mighty.

20 I l ôte la parole à ceux qui ont de l'assurance; Il prive de jugement les vieillards.

He impedes the lips of those that speak the truth and takes away the counsel of the aged.

21 I l verse le mépris sur les grands; Il relâche la ceinture des forts.

He pours contempt upon princes and weakens the strength of the mighty.

22 I l met à découvert ce qui est caché dans les ténèbres, Il produit à la lumière l'ombre de la mort.

He uncovers the depths of the darkness and brings out to light the shadow of death.

23 I l donne de l'accroissement aux nations, et il les anéantit; Il les étend au loin, et il les ramène dans leurs limites.

He multiplies the Gentiles and destroys them; he scatters the Gentiles and gathers them again.

24 I l enlève l'intelligence aux chefs des peuples, Il les fait errer dans les déserts sans chemin;

He takes away the heart of the heads of the people of the earth and causes them to become lost, wandering without a way.

25 I ls tâtonnent dans les ténèbres, et ne voient pas clair; Il les fait errer comme des gens ivres.

They grope in the darkness and not the light, and he causes them to err like drunken men.
