1 L es hommes d'Éphraïm se rassemblèrent, partirent pour le nord, et dirent à Jephthé: Pourquoi es-tu allé combattre les fils d'Ammon sans nous avoir appelés à marcher avec toi? Nous voulons incendier ta maison et te brûler avec elle.

¶ And the men of Ephraim gathered themselves together towards the Aquilon and said unto Jephthah, Why didst thou go over to fight against the sons of Ammon and didst not call us to go with thee? We will burn thy house upon thee with fire.

2 J ephthé leur répondit: Nous avons eu de grandes contestations, moi et mon peuple, avec les fils d'Ammon; et quand je vous ai appelés, vous ne m'avez pas délivré de leurs mains.

And Jephthah replied unto them, I and my people were at great strife with the sons of Ammon, and when I called you, ye did not defend me from their hands.

3 V oyant que tu ne venais pas à mon secours, j'ai exposé ma vie, et j'ai marché contre les fils d'Ammon. L'Éternel les a livrés entre mes mains. Pourquoi donc aujourd'hui montez-vous contre moi pour me faire la guerre?

Seeing, therefore, that ye did not defend me, I put my life in my hands and went over against the sons of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand. Why then have ye come up against me this day to fight with me?

4 J ephthé rassembla tous les hommes de Galaad, et livra bataille à Éphraïm. Les hommes de Galaad battirent Éphraïm, parce que les Éphraïmites disaient: Vous êtes des fugitifs d'Éphraïm! Galaad est au milieu d'Éphraïm, au milieu de Manassé!

Then Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead and fought with Ephraim; and the men of Gilead smote Ephraim because they had said, Ye are fugitives of Ephraim; ye are Gileadites among Ephraim and Manasseh.

5 G alaad s'empara des gués du Jourdain du côté d'Éphraïm. Et quand l'un des fuyards d'Éphraïm disait: Laissez-moi passer! les hommes de Galaad lui demandaient: Es-tu Éphraïmite? Il répondait: Non.

And the Gileadites took the passages of the Jordan from Ephraim; and it was such that when any of those of Ephraim who had escaped would say, May I pass? The men of Gilead would ask them, Art thou an Ephrathite? If he said, No;

6 I ls lui disaient alors: Hé bien, dis Schibboleth. Et il disait Sibboleth, car il ne pouvait pas bien prononcer. Sur quoi les hommes de Galaad le saisissaient, et l'égorgeaient près des gués du Jourdain. Il périt en ce temps-là quarante-deux mille hommes d'Éphraïm.

then they would say unto him, Now say Shibboleth. And he would say Sibboleth; for he could not pronounce it the same. Then they would take him and slay him at the passages of the Jordan. And at that time forty-two thousand of those of Ephraim fell.

7 J ephthé fut juge en Israël pendant six ans; puis Jephthé, le Galaadite, mourut, et fut enterré dans l'une des villes de Galaad.

And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in one of the cities of Gilead.

8 A près lui, Ibtsan de Bethléhem fut juge en Israël.

¶ After him Ibzan, of Bethlehem, judged Israel,

9 I l eut trente fils, il maria trente filles au dehors, et il fit venir pour ses fils trente filles du dehors. Il fut juge en Israël pendant sept ans;

who had thirty sons and thirty daughters, whom he married abroad and took in thirty daughters from abroad for his sons. And he judged Israel seven years.

10 p uis Ibtsan mourut, et fut enterré à Bethléhem.

Then Ibzan died and was buried at Bethlehem.

11 A près lui, Élon de Zabulon fut juge en Israël. Il fut juge en Israël pendant dix ans;

And after him Elon, a Zebulonite, judged Israel, and he judged Israel ten years.

12 p uis Élon de Zabulon mourut, et fut enterré à Ajalon, dans le pays de Zabulon.

And Elon, the Zebulonite, died and was buried in Aijalon in the country of Zebulun.

13 A près lui, Abdon, fils d'Hillel, le Pirathonite, fut juge en Israël.

And after him Abdon, the son of Hillel, a Pirathonite, judged Israel.

14 I l eut quarante fils et trente petits-fils, qui montaient sur soixante dix ânons. Il fut juge en Israël pendant huit ans;

And he had forty sons and thirty grandsons that rode on seventy he asses, and he judged Israel eight years.

15 p uis Abdon, fils d'Hillel, le Pirathonite, mourut, et fut enterré à Pirathon, dans le pays d'Éphraïm, sur la montagne des Amalécites.

And Abdon, the son of Hillel the Pirathonite, died and was buried in Pirathon in the land of Ephraim in the mount of Amalek.
