¶ Of man are the preparations of the heart, but the answer of the tongue is from the LORD.

2 T outes les voies de l'homme sont pures à ses yeux; Mais celui qui pèse les esprits, c'est l'Éternel.

¶ All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the spirits.

3 R ecommande à l'Éternel tes oeuvres, Et tes projets réussiront.

¶ Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.

4 L 'Éternel a tout fait pour un but, Même le méchant pour le jour du malheur.

¶ The LORD has made all things by himself, yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

5 T out coeur hautain est en abomination à l'Éternel; Certes, il ne restera pas impuni.

¶ Every one that is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; the covenant that he makes, shall not be without chastening.

6 P ar la bonté et la fidélité on expie l'iniquité, Et par la crainte de l'Éternel on se détourne du mal.

¶ By mercy and truth iniquity is purged, and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.

7 Q uand l'Éternel approuve les voies d'un homme, Il dispose favorablement à son égard même ses ennemis.

¶ When a man’s ways please the LORD, he makes even his enemies to be at peace with him.

8 M ieux vaut peu, avec la justice, Que de grands revenus, avec l'injustice.

¶ Better is a little with righteousness than a great number of fruits with injustice.

9 L e coeur de l'homme médite sa voie, Mais c'est l'Éternel qui dirige ses pas.

¶ The heart of man devises his way, but the LORD directs his steps.

10 D es oracles sont sur les lèvres du roi: Sa bouche ne doit pas être infidèle quand il juge.

¶ A divine sentence is in the lips of the king; his mouth does not transgress in judgment.

11 L e poids et la balance justes sont à l'Éternel; Tous les poids du sac sont son ouvrage.

¶ A just weight and balance are the LORD’s; all the weights of the bag are his work.

12 L es rois ont horreur de faire le mal, Car c'est par la justice que le trône s'affermit.

¶ It is an abomination to kings to commit wickedness, for the throne is to be established with righteousness.

13 L es lèvres justes gagnent la faveur des rois, Et ils aiment celui qui parle avec droiture.

¶ Righteous lips are the delight of kings, and they love him that speaks that which is right.

14 L a fureur du roi est un messager de mort, Et un homme sage doit l'apaiser.

¶ The wrath of the king is as a messenger of death, but the wise man will avoid it.

15 L a sérénité du visage du roi donne la vie, Et sa faveur est comme une pluie du printemps.

In the light of the king’s countenance is life, and his favour is as a cloud of the latter rain.

16 C ombien acquérir la sagesse vaut mieux que l'or! Combien acquérir l'intelligence est préférable à l'argent!

¶ How much better is it to acquire wisdom than gold! and to acquire understanding is worth more than silver!

17 L e chemin des hommes droits, c'est d'éviter le mal; Celui qui garde son âme veille sur sa voie.

¶ The highway of the upright is to separate himself from evil; he that keeps his way preserves his soul.

18 L 'arrogance précède la ruine, Et l'orgueil précède la chute.

¶ Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.

19 M ieux vaut être humble avec les humbles Que de partager le butin avec les orgueilleux.

¶ It is better to humble your spirit with the lowly than to divide the spoil with the proud.

20 C elui qui réfléchit sur les choses trouve le bonheur, Et celui qui se confie en l'Éternel est heureux.

¶ He who has understanding in the word shall find good, and blessed is he who trusts in the LORD.

21 C elui qui est sage de coeur est appelé intelligent, Et la douceur des lèvres augmente le savoir.

¶ The wise in heart is called a man of understanding; and the sweetness of the lips shall increase doctrine.

22 L a sagesse est une source de vie pour celui qui la possède; Et le châtiment des insensés, c'est leur folie.

¶ Understanding is a wellspring of life unto him that has it, but the instruction of fools is folly.

23 C elui qui est sage de coeur manifeste la sagesse par sa bouche, Et l'accroissement de son savoir paraît sur ses lèvres.

¶ The heart of the wise causes his mouth to be prudent, and with his lips he shall increase doctrine.

24 L es paroles agréables sont un rayon de miel, Douces pour l'âme et salutaires pour le corps.

¶ Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and medicine to the bones.

25 T elle voie paraît droite à un homme, Mais son issue, c'est la voie de la mort.

¶ There is a way that seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

26 C elui qui travaille, travaille pour lui, Car sa bouche l'y excite.

¶ The soul of him that labours, labours for himself; for his mouth craves it of him.

27 L 'homme pervers prépare le malheur, Et il y a sur ses lèvres comme un feu ardent.

¶ The man of Belial digs in search of evil, and in his lips there is as a burning fire.

28 L 'homme pervers excite des querelles, Et le rapporteur divise les amis.

The perverse man sows strife, and the tale bearer separates princes.

29 L 'homme violent séduit son prochain, Et le fait marcher dans une voie qui n'est pas bonne.

¶ The evil man flatters his neighbour and leads him into the way that is not good.

30 C elui qui ferme les yeux pour se livrer à des pensées perverses, Celui qui se mord les lèvres, a déjà consommé le mal.

He shuts his eyes to devise perverse things; moving his lips he brings evil to pass.

31 L es cheveux blancs sont une couronne d'honneur; C'est dans le chemin de la justice qu'on la trouve.

¶ Old age is a crown of glory if it is found in the way of righteousness.

32 C elui qui est lent à la colère vaut mieux qu'un héros, Et celui qui est maître de lui-même, que celui qui prend des villes.

¶ He that is slow to anger is better than the mighty, and he that rules his spirit than he that takes a city.

33 O n jette le sort dans le pan de la robe, Mais toute décision vient de l'Éternel.

¶ The lot is cast into the lap, but the judgment thereof is of the LORD.
