1 M alheur à ceux qui prononcent des ordonnances iniques, Et à ceux qui transcrivent des arrêts injustes,

¶ Woe unto those that establish unrighteous laws and that wilfully prescribe tyranny

2 P our refuser justice aux pauvres, Et ravir leur droit aux malheureux de mon peuple, Pour faire des veuves leur proie, Et des orphelins leur butin!

to turn aside the poor from right judgment and to take away the right from the afflicted of my people that widows may be their prey and that they may rob the fatherless!

3 Q ue ferez-vous au jour du châtiment, Et de la ruine qui du lointain fondra sur vous? Vers qui fuirez-vous, pour avoir du secours, Et où laisserez-vous votre gloire?

And what will ye do in the day of visitation and in the desolation which shall come from far? To whom will ye flee for help and where will ye leave your glory?

4 L es uns seront courbés parmi les captifs, Les autres tomberont parmi les morts. Malgré tout cela, sa colère ne s'apaise point, Et sa main est encore étendue.

They shall bow down among the prisoners, and they shall fall among the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

5 M alheur à l'Assyrien, verge de ma colère! La verge dans sa main, c'est l'instrument de ma fureur.

¶ O Assyrian, rod and staff of my anger, in thy hand have I placed my indignation.

6 J e l'ai lâché contre une nation impie, Je l'ai fait marcher contre le peuple de mon courroux, Pour qu'il se livre au pillage et fasse du butin, Pour qu'il le foule aux pieds comme la boue des rues.

I will send him against a hypocritical nation, and upon the people of my wrath will I send him to take spoil and to take prey and to ready them that they might be tread down like the mire of the streets.

7 M ais il n'en juge pas ainsi, Et ce n'est pas là la pensée de son coeur; Il ne songe qu'à détruire, Qu'à exterminer les nations en foule.

Howbeit he shall not think like this; not even in his heart shall he imagine this way of doing things, but his thought shall be to destroy and cut off nations not a few.

8 C ar il dit: Mes princes ne sont-ils pas autant de rois?

For he shall say, Are not my princes altogether kings?

9 N 'en a-t-il pas été de Calno comme de Carkemisch? N'en a-t-il pas été de Hamath comme d'Arpad? N'en a-t-il pas été de Samarie comme de Damas?

Is not Calno as Carchemish? Is not Hamath as Arpad? Is not Samaria as Damascus?

10 D e même que ma main a atteint les royaumes des idoles, Où il y avait plus d'images qu'à Jérusalem et à Samarie,

As my hand has found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel those of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

11 C e que j'ai fait à Samarie et à ses idoles, Ne le ferai-je pas à Jérusalem et à ses images?

shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?

12 M ais, quand le Seigneur aura accompli toute son oeuvre Sur la montagne de Sion et à Jérusalem, Je punirai le roi d'Assyrie pour le fruit de son coeur orgueilleux, Et pour l'arrogance de ses regards hautains.

Therefore it shall come to pass, that when the Lord has performed his whole work upon Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will come upon the fruit of the pride of the heart of the king of Assyria, and upon the glory of his high looks.

13 C ar il dit: C'est par la force de ma main que j'ai agi, C'est par ma sagesse, car je suis intelligent; J'ai reculé les limites des peuples, et pillé leurs trésors, Et, comme un héros, j'ai renversé ceux qui siégeaient sur des trônes;

For he said, By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom; for I have been prudent: and I have removed the boundaries of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and I have cast down as valiant ones those who were seated:

14 J 'ai mis la main sur les richesses des peuples, comme sur un nid, Et, comme on ramasse des oeufs abandonnés, J'ai ramassé toute la terre: Nul n'a remué l'aile, Ni ouvert le bec, ni poussé un cri. -

And my hand has found as a nest the riches of the peoples: and as one gathers eggs that are left, I have taken control over all the earth; and there was no one that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped.

15 L a hache se glorifie-t-elle envers celui qui s'en sert? Ou la scie est-elle arrogante envers celui qui la manie? Comme si la verge faisait mouvoir celui qui la lève, Comme si le bâton soulevait celui qui n'est pas du bois!

Shall the axe boast itself against him that hews with it? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that moves it? as if the rod should rise up against those that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift itself up. Is it not wood?

16 C 'est pourquoi le Seigneur, le Seigneur des armées, enverra Le dépérissement parmi ses robustes guerriers; Et, sous sa magnificence, éclatera un embrasement, Comme l'embrasement d'un feu.

Therefore shall the Lord, the LORD of the hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire.

17 L a lumière d'Israël deviendra un feu, Et son Saint une flamme, Qui consumera et dévorera ses épines et ses ronces, En un seul jour;

And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day;

18 Q ui consumera, corps et âme, La magnificence de sa forêt et de ses campagnes. Il en sera comme d'un malade, qui tombe en défaillance.

and shall consume the glory of his forest and of his fruitful field, from the soul unto the flesh; and they shall come to be as a standard-bearer in defeat.

19 L e reste des arbres de sa forêt pourra être compté, Et un enfant en écrirait le nombre.

And the trees that shall remain in his forest shall be in number such that a child may count them.

20 E n ce jour-là, Le reste d'Israël et les réchappés de la maison de Jacob, Cesseront de s'appuyer sur celui qui les frappait; Ils s'appuieront avec confiance sur l'Éternel, le Saint d'Israël.

¶ And it shall come to pass in that day that those who shall be left of Israel and those who shall be left of the house of Jacob shall no more again stay upon him that smote them, but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

21 L e reste reviendra, le reste de Jacob, Au Dieu puissant.

The remnant shall become converted, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God.

22 Q uand ton peuple, ô Israël, serait comme le sable de la mer, Un reste seulement reviendra; La destruction est résolue, elle fera déborder la justice.

For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet the remnant of them shall become converted; when the consumption comes to an end, righteousness shall overflow.

23 E t cette destruction qui a été résolue, Le Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées, l'accomplira dans tout le pays.

For the Lord GOD of the hosts shall make a consumption and an end in the midst of all the land.

24 C ependant, ainsi parle le Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées: O mon peuple, qui habites en Sion, ne crains pas l'Assyrien! Il te frappe de la verge, Et il lève son bâton sur toi, comme faisaient les Égyptiens.

¶ Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of the hosts, O my people, dweller of Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian; he shall smite thee with a rod and shall lift up his stick against thee by the way of Egypt;

25 M ais, encore un peu de temps, Et le châtiment cessera, Puis ma colère se tournera contre lui pour l'anéantir.

yet from now until a very little while the indignation and my anger shall cease, to make an end of them.

26 L 'Éternel des armées agitera le fouet contre lui, Comme il frappa Madian au rocher d'Oreb; Et, de même qu'il leva son bâton sur la mer, Il le lèvera encore, comme en Égypte.

And the LORD of the hosts shall raise up a scourge against him as the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb and shall raise up his rod upon the sea, by the way of Egypt.

27 E n ce jour, son fardeau sera ôté de dessus ton épaule, Et son joug de dessus ton cou; Et la graisse fera éclater le joug.

And it shall come to pass in that day that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be consumed in the presence of the anointing.

28 I l marche sur Ajjath, traverse Migron, Laisse ses bagages à Micmasch.

He is come to Aiath; he is passed unto Migron; in Michmash he shall number his army:

29 I ls passent le défilé, Ils couchent à Guéba; Rama tremble, Guibea de Saül prend la fuite.

They are gone over the fords; they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled.

30 F ais éclater ta voix, fille de Gallim! Prends garde, Laïs! malheur à toi, Anathoth!

Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim; Laish cause poor Anathoth to hear thee.

31 M adména se disperse, Les habitants de Guébim sont en fuite.

Madmenah is in upheaval; the inhabitants of Gebim shall gather themselves together.

32 E ncore un jour de halte à Nob, Et il menace de sa main la montagne de la fille de Sion, La colline de Jérusalem.

Even yet shall come a day when he shall rest at Nob; he shall raise his hand unto the mountain of the daughter of Zion unto the hill of Jerusalem.

33 V oici, le Seigneur, l'Éternel des armées, Brise les rameaux avec violence: Les plus grands sont coupés, Les plus élevés sont abattus.

Behold, the Lord, the LORD of the hosts, shall lop the bough with force, and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled.

34 I l renverse avec le fer les taillis de la forêt, Et le Liban tombe sous le Puissant.

And he shall cut down the thickness of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by force.
