1 M on fils, n'oublie pas mes enseignements, Et que ton coeur garde mes préceptes;

¶ My son, forget not my law, but let thine heart keep my commandments:

2 C ar ils prolongeront les jours et les années de ta vie, Et ils augmenteront ta paix.

For they shall add length of days and long life and peace unto thee.

3 Q ue la bonté et la fidélité ne t'abandonnent pas; Lie-les à ton cou, écris-les sur la table de ton coeur.

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee; bind them about thy neck; write them upon the tablet of thine heart:

4 T u acquerras ainsi de la grâce et une raison saine, Aux yeux de Dieu et des hommes.

So shalt thou find grace and good favour in the sight of God and man.

5 C onfie-toi en l'Éternel de tout ton coeur, Et ne t'appuie pas sur ta sagesse;

Trust in the LORD with all thine heart and lean not unto thine own understanding.

6 R econnais-le dans toutes tes voies, Et il aplanira tes sentiers.

In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.

7 N e sois point sage à tes propres yeux, Crains l'Éternel, et détourne-toi du mal:

¶ Be not wise in thine own eyes; fear the LORD and depart from evil.

8 C e sera la santé pour tes muscles, Et un rafraîchissement pour tes os.

It shall be medicine to thy navel and marrow to thy bones.

9 H onore l'Éternel avec tes biens, Et avec les prémices de tout ton revenu:

Honour the LORD with thy substance and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

10 A lors tes greniers seront remplis d'abondance, Et tes cuves regorgeront de moût.

So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.

11 M on fils, ne méprise pas la correction de l'Éternel, Et ne t'effraie point de ses châtiments;

My son, do not despise the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

12 C ar l'Éternel châtie celui qu'il aime, Comme un père l'enfant qu'il chérit.

For the LORD chastens whom he loves and delights in, even as a father to his son.

13 H eureux l'homme qui a trouvé la sagesse, Et l'homme qui possède l'intelligence!

¶ Blessed is the man that has found wisdom and who brings to light intelligence,

14 C ar le gain qu'elle procure est préférable à celui de l'argent, Et le profit qu'on en tire vaut mieux que l'or;

for the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver and the fruits thereof more than fine gold.

15 E lle est plus précieuse que les perles, Elle a plus de valeur que tous les objets de prix.

She is more precious than precious stones, and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.

16 D ans sa droite est une longue vie; Dans sa gauche, la richesse et la gloire.

Length of days is in her right hand and in her left hand riches and honour.

17 S es voies sont des voies agréables, Et tous ses sentiers sont paisibles.

Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.

18 E lle est un arbre de vie pour ceux qui la saisissent, Et ceux qui la possèdent sont heureux.

She is a tree of life to those that lay hold upon her, and blessed is every one that retains her.

19 C 'est par la sagesse que l'Éternel a fondé la terre, C'est par l'intelligence qu'il a affermi les cieux;

The LORD by wisdom has founded the earth; by intelligence has he established the heavens.

20 C 'est par sa science que les abîmes se sont ouverts, Et que les nuages distillent la rosée.

By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the heavens drop down the dew.

21 M on fils, que ces enseignements ne s'éloignent pas de tes yeux, Garde la sagesse et la réflexion:

¶ My son, do not let them depart from thine eyes; keep sound wisdom and discretion,

22 E lles seront la vie de ton âme, Et l'ornement de ton cou.

so shall they be life unto thy soul and grace to thy neck.

23 A lors tu marcheras avec assurance dans ton chemin, Et ton pied ne heurtera pas.

Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.

24 S i tu te couches, tu seras sans crainte; Et quand tu seras couché, ton sommeil sera doux.

When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.

25 N e redoute ni une terreur soudaine, Ni une attaque de la part des méchants;

Thou shall not be afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked when it comes.

26 C ar l'Éternel sera ton assurance, Et il préservera ton pied de toute embûche.

For the LORD shall be thy confidence and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

27 N e refuse pas un bienfait à celui qui y a droit, Quand tu as le pouvoir de l'accorder.

¶ Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.

28 N e dis pas à ton prochain: Va et reviens, Demain je donnerai! quand tu as de quoi donner.

Do not say unto thy neighbour, Go and come again and tomorrow I will give when thou hast it by thee.

29 N e médite pas le mal contre ton prochain, Lorsqu'il demeure tranquillement près de toi.

Do not devise evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwells securely by thee.

30 N e conteste pas sans motif avec quelqu'un, Lorsqu'il ne t'a point fait de mal.

Do not sue a man without cause, if he has done thee no harm.

31 N e porte pas envie à l'homme violent, Et ne choisis aucune de ses voies.

Envy thou not the oppressor and choose none of his ways.

32 C ar l'Éternel a en horreur les hommes pervers, Mais il est un ami pour les hommes droits;

For the perverse is an abomination to the LORD; but his secret is with the righteous.

33 L a malédiction de l'Éternel est dans la maison du méchant, Mais il bénit la demeure des justes;

The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked, but he shall bless the habitation of the just.

34 I l se moque des moqueurs, Mais il fait grâce aux humbles;

Surely he scorns the scorners; but he gives grace unto the humble.

35 L es sages hériteront la gloire, Mais les insensés ont la honte en partage.

The wise shall inherit glory; but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
