1 M ardochée, ayant appris tout ce qui se passait, déchira ses vêtements, s'enveloppa d'un sac et se couvrit de cendre. Puis il alla au milieu de la ville en poussant avec force des cris amers,

¶ When Mordecai perceived all that was done, Mordecai rent his clothes and put on sackcloth with ashes and went out into the midst of the city and cried with a loud and a bitter cry

2 e t se rendit jusqu'à la porte du roi, dont l'entrée était interdite à toute personne revêtue d'un sac.

and came before the king’s gate; for no one was allowed to enter into the king’s gate clothed with sackcloth.

3 D ans chaque province, partout où arrivaient l'ordre du roi et son édit, il y eut une grande désolation parmi les Juifs; ils jeûnaient, pleuraient et se lamentaient, et beaucoup se couchaient sur le sac et la cendre.

And in each province, wherever the king’s commandment and his law came, there was great mourning among the Jews and fasting and weeping and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.

4 L es servantes d'Esther et ses eunuques vinrent lui annoncer cela, et la reine fut très effrayée. Elle envoya des vêtements à Mardochée pour le couvrir et lui faire ôter son sac, mais il ne les accepta pas.

So Esther’s maids and her eunuchs came and told her. Then the queen was grieved exceedingly, and she sent raiment to clothe Mordecai and to take away his sackcloth from him; but he did not receive it.

5 A lors Esther appela Hathac, l'un des eunuques que le roi avait placés auprès d'elle, et elle le chargea d'aller demander à Mardochée ce que c'était et d'où cela venait.

¶ Then Esther called for Hatach, one of the king’s eunuchs, whom he had appointed to attend her, and sent him to Mordecai, to know what it was and why it was.

6 H athac se rendit vers Mardochée sur la place de la ville, devant la porte du roi.

So Hatach went forth to Mordecai unto the plaza of the city, which was before the king’s gate.

7 E t Mardochée lui raconta tout ce qui lui était arrivé, et lui indiqua la somme d'argent qu'Haman avait promis de livrer au trésor du roi en retour du massacre des Juifs.

And Mordecai told him of all that had happened unto him and of the sum of the money that Haman had promised to pay to the king’s treasuries for the Jews, to destroy them.

8 I l lui donna aussi une copie de l'édit publié dans Suse en vue de leur destruction, afin qu'il le montrât à Esther et lui fît tout connaître; et il ordonna qu'Esther se rendît chez le roi pour lui demander grâce et l'implorer en faveur de son peuple.

Also he gave him the copy of the writing of the decree that was given at Shushan to destroy them, to show it unto Esther and to declare it unto her and to charge her that she should go in unto the king to make supplication unto him and to make request before him for her people.

9 H athac vint rapporter à Esther les paroles de Mardochée.

And Hatach came and told Esther the words of Mordecai.

10 E sther chargea Hathac d'aller dire à Mardochée:

Again Esther spoke unto Hatach and sent him to say unto Mordecai,

11 T ous les serviteurs du roi et le peuple des provinces du roi savent qu'il existe une loi portant peine de mort contre quiconque, homme ou femme, entre chez le roi, dans la cour intérieure, sans avoir été appelé; celui-là seul a la vie sauve, à qui le roi tend le sceptre d'or. Et moi, je n'ai point été appelée auprès du roi depuis trente jours.

All the king’s slaves and the people of the king’s provinces do know that anyone, whether man or woman, who shall come unto the king into the inner court without being called, by one law shall be put to death, unless the king shall hold out the golden sceptre, that they may live; but I have not been called to come in unto the king these thirty days.

12 L orsque les paroles d'Esther eurent été rapportées à Mardochée,

And they told to Mordecai Esther’s words.

13 M ardochée fit répondre à Esther: Ne t'imagine pas que tu échapperas seule d'entre tous les Juifs, parce que tu es dans la maison du roi;

Then Mordecai told them to answer Esther, Do not think in thy soul that thou shalt escape in the king’s house, more than all the Jews.

14 c ar, si tu te tais maintenant, le secours et la délivrance surgiront d'autre part pour les Juifs, et toi et la maison de ton père vous périrez. Et qui sait si ce n'est pas pour un temps comme celui-ci que tu es parvenue à la royauté?

For if thou art silent at this time, then enlargement and deliverance shall arise to the Jews from another place, but thou and thy father’s house shall be destroyed; and who knows whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?

15 E sther envoya dire à Mardochée:

Then Esther told them to return Mordecai this answer,

16 V a, rassemble tous les Juifs qui se trouvent à Suse, et jeûnez pour moi, sans manger ni boire pendant trois jours, ni la nuit ni le jour. Moi aussi, je jeûnerai de même avec mes servantes, puis j'entrerai chez le roi, malgré la loi; et si je dois périr, je périrai.

Go, gather together all the Jews that are present in Shushan and fast for me, and neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day; I also and my maidens will fast likewise; and so I will go in unto the king, even though this is not according to the law; and if I perish, I perish.

17 M ardochée s'en alla, et fit tout ce qu'Esther lui avait ordonné.

So Mordecai went and did according to all that Esther had commanded him.
