1 ( 39: 34) L'Éternel, s'adressant à Job, dit:

¶ Moreover, the LORD answered Job and said,

2 ( 39: 35) Celui qui dispute contre le Tout Puissant est-il convaincu? Celui qui conteste avec Dieu a-t-il une réplique à faire?

Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct him? Let him that disputes with God answer this.

3 ( 39: 36) Job répondit à l'Éternel et dit:

Then Job answered the LORD and said,

4 ( 39: 37) Voici, je suis trop peu de chose; que te répliquerais-je? Je mets la main sur ma bouche.

Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay my hand over my mouth.

5 ( 39: 38) J'ai parlé une fois, je ne répondrai plus; Deux fois, je n'ajouterai rien.

Once I have spoken; but I will not answer; even twice, but I will proceed no further.

6 ( 40: 1) L'Éternel répondit à Job du milieu de la tempête et dit:

¶ Then the LORD answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,

7 ( 40: 2) Ceins tes reins comme un vaillant homme; Je t'interrogerai, et tu m'instruiras.

Gird up thy loins now like a man; I will ask thee, and explain thou unto me.

8 ( 40: 3) Anéantiras-tu jusqu'à ma justice? Me condamneras-tu pour te donner droit?

Wilt thou disannul my judgment? Wilt thou condemn me, that thou may be justified?

9 ( 40: 4) As-tu un bras comme celui de Dieu, Une voix tonnante comme la sienne?

Hast thou an arm like God? And canst thou thunder with a voice like him?

10 ( 40: 5) Orne-toi de magnificence et de grandeur, Revêts-toi de splendeur et de gloire!

Deck thyself now with majesty and excellency; and array thyself with glory and beauty.

11 ( 40: 6) Répands les flots de ta colère, Et d'un regard abaisse les hautains!

Cast abroad the rage of thy wrath; and behold every one that is proud and bring him down.

12 ( 40: 7) D'un regard humilie les hautains, Écrase sur place les méchants,

Look on every one that is proud, and bring him low; and tread down the wicked in their place.

13 ( 40: 8) Cache-les tous ensemble dans la poussière, Enferme leur front dans les ténèbres!

Hide them in the dust together; and blindfold their faces in darkness.

14 ( 40: 9) Alors je rends hommage A la puissance de ta droite.

Then I will also confess unto thee that thine own right hand can save thee.

15 ( 40: 10) Voici l'hippopotame, à qui j'ai donné la vie comme à toi! Il mange de l'herbe comme le boeuf.

¶ Behold now behemoth, which I made with thee; he eats grass as an ox.

16 ( 40: 11) Le voici! Sa force est dans ses reins, Et sa vigueur dans les muscles de son ventre;

Behold now, his strength is in his loins, and his force is in the navel of his belly.

17 ( 40: 12) Il plie sa queue aussi ferme qu'un cèdre; Les nerfs de ses cuisses sont entrelacés;

He moves his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his stones are wrapped together.

18 ( 40: 13) Ses os sont des tubes d'airain, Ses membres sont comme des barres de fer.

His bones are as strong as brass; his members are like bars of iron.

19 ( 40: 14) Il est la première des oeuvres de Dieu; Celui qui l'a fait l'a pourvu d'un glaive.

He is the beginning of the ways of God; he that made him shall make his sword draw near unto him.

20 ( 40: 15) Il trouve sa pâture dans les montagnes, Où se jouent toutes les bêtes des champs.

Surely the mountains bring him forth food, where all the beasts of the field play.

21 ( 40: 16) Il se couche sous les lotus, Au milieu des roseaux et des marécages;

He shall lie down under the shade, in the covert of the reeds and of the damp places.

22 ( 40: 17) Les lotus le couvrent de leur ombre, Les saules du torrent l'environnent.

The shady trees cover him with their shadow; the willows of the brook compass him about.

23 ( 40: 18) Que le fleuve vienne à déborder, il ne s'enfuit pas: Que le Jourdain se précipite dans sa gueule, il reste calme.

Behold, he shall drink up a river and not change; he trusts that he can draw up the Jordan into his mouth.

24 ( 40: 19) Est-ce à force ouverte qu'on pourra le saisir? Est-ce au moyen de filets qu'on lui percera le nez?

His maker shall take him by the weakness of his eyes in a snare, and pierce through his nose.
