1 E ntonces habló Jesús a la gente y a sus discípulos, diciendo:

¶ Then Jesus spoke to the multitude and to his disciples,

2 E n la cátedra de Moisés están sentados los escribas y los fariseos.

saying, The scribes and the Pharisees have sat down in Moses’ seat;

3 A sí que, todo lo que os digan que guardéis, guardadlo y hacedlo; mas no hagáis conforme a sus obras, porque dicen, y no hacen.

therefore, whatever they bid you to observe, observe it and do it, but do not act according to their works, for they say and do not do it.

4 P ues atan cargas pesadas y difíciles de llevar, y las ponen sobre los hombros de los hombres; pero ellos ni con un dedo quieren moverlas;

For they bind burdens that are heavy and grievous to bear and lay them on men’s shoulders, but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

5 s ino que hacen todas sus obras para ser vistos por los hombres. Pues ensanchan sus filacterias, y alargan los flecos de sus mantos;

But they do all their works that they may be seen of men: they make broad their phylacteries and enlarge the borders of their garments

6 y les gusta ocupar el primer puesto en los banquetes y los primeros asientos en las sinagogas,

and love the first place at feasts and the chief seats in the synagogues

7 s er saludados efusivamente en las plazas, y que los hombres los llamen: Rabí, Rabí.

and greetings in the markets and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi.

8 P ero vosotros no queráis que os llamen Rabí; porque uno solo es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo, y todos vosotros sois hermanos.

But, as for you, desire not to be called Rabbi, for one is your Master, the Christ; and you are all brothers.

9 Y no llaméis padre vuestro en la tierra a nadie; porque uno solo es vuestro Padre, el que está en los cielos.

And call no one your father upon the earth, for one is your Father, who is in the heavens.

10 N i seáis llamados maestros; porque uno solo es vuestro Maestro, el Cristo.

Neither be ye called masters, for one is your Master, the Christ.

11 E l mayor de vosotros, será vuestro servidor.

But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant.

12 M as cualquiera que se ensalce a sí mismo, será humillado; y cualquiera que se humille a sí mismo, será ensalzado.

And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled, and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted.

13 M as ¡ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque cerráis el reino de los cielos delante de los hombres; pues ni entráis vosotros, ni dejáis entrar a los que están entrando.

¶ But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of the heavens in front of men, for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye those that are entering to go in.

14 ¡ Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque devoráis las casas de las viudas, y como pretexto hacéis largas oraciones; por esto recibiréis mayor condenación.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses and for a pretence make long prayer; therefore, ye shall receive the greater judgment.

15 ¡ Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque recorréis el mar y la tierra para hacer un prosélito, y cuando llega a serlo, le hacéis dos veces más hijo del infierno que vosotros.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more a son of hell than yourselves.

16 ¡ Ay de vosotros, guías ciegos!, que decís: Si alguno jura por el templo, no es nada; pero si alguno jura por el oro del templo, queda obligado.

Woe unto you, ye blind guides, who say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gold of the temple, he is a debtor!

17 ¡ Insensatos y ciegos!, porque ¿qué es mayor, el oro o el templo que santifica al oro?

Ye fools and blind, for which is greater, the gold or the temple that sanctifies the gold?

18 T ambién decís: Si alguno jura por el altar, no es nada; pero si alguno jura por la ofrenda que está sobre él, queda obligado.

And, Whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever swears by the gift that is upon it, he is a debtor.

19 ¡ Necios y ciegos!, porque ¿qué es mayor, la ofrenda, o el altar que santifica a la ofrenda?

Ye fools and blind, for which one is greater, the gift or the altar that sanctifies the gift?

20 P ues el que jura por el altar, jura por él, y por todo lo que está sobre él;

Whosoever therefore shall swear by the altar, swears by it and by all things thereon.

21 y el que jura por el templo, jura por él, y por el que lo habita;

And whosoever shall swear by the temple, swears by it and by Him that dwells therein.

22 y el que jura por el cielo, jura por el trono de Dios, y por el que está sentado en él.

And he that shall swear by the heaven, swears by the throne of God and by Him that sits thereon.

23 ¡ Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque pagáis el diezmo de la menta, del eneldo y del comino, y habéis dejado lo más importante de la ley: la justicia, la misericordia y la fe. Esto era necesario hacer, sin dejar de hacer aquello.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin and have omitted that which is more important of the law: judgment, mercy, and faith; these were expedient for ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

24 ¡ Guías ciegos, que coláis el mosquito, y os tragáis el camello!

Ye blind guides, who strain at a gnat and swallow a camel.

25 ¡ Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque limpiáis lo exterior del vaso y del plato, pero por dentro estáis llenos de rapiña y de injusticia.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup or of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and incontinence.

26 ¡ Fariseo ciego! Limpia primero lo de dentro del vaso y del plato, para que también lo de fuera quede limpio.

Thou blind Pharisee, cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter that the outside of them may be clean also.

27 ¡ Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque sois semejantes a sepulcros blanqueados, que por fuera, a la verdad, aparecen hermosos, mas por dentro están llenos de huesos de muertos y de toda inmundicia.

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whitewashed sepulchres, who indeed appear beautiful outside, but inside are full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness.

28 A sí también vosotros por fuera, a la verdad, aparecéis justos a los hombres, pero por dentro estáis llenos de hipocresía e iniquidad.

Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but within ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.

29 ¡ Ay de vosotros, escribas y fariseos, hipócritas!, porque edificáis los sepulcros de los profetas, y adornáis los monumentos de los justos,

Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets and adorn the sepulchres of the righteous

30 y decís: Si hubiésemos vivido en los días de nuestros padres, no habríamos sido sus cómplices en la sangre de los profetas.

and say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.

31 A sí que dais testimonio contra vosotros mismos, de que sois hijos de los que mataron a los profetas.

Therefore ye are witnesses unto yourselves that ye are the sons of those who murdered the prophets.

32 ¡ Vosotros también colmad la medida de vuestros padres!

Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers.

33 ¡ Serpientes, engendros de víboras! ¿Cómo escaparéis de la condenación del infierno?

Ye serpents, ye generation of vipers, how can ye escape the judgment of hell?

34 P or tanto, he aquí que yo os envío profetas, sabios y escribas; y de ellos, a unos mataréis y crucificaréis, y a otros azotaréis en vuestras sinagogas, y perseguiréis de ciudad en ciudad;

¶ Therefore, behold, I send unto you prophets and wise men and scribes, and some of them ye shall kill and crucify, and some of them ye shall scourge in your synagogues and persecute them from city to city,

35 p ara que venga sobre vosotros toda la sangre justa derramada sobre la tierra, desde la sangre de Abel el justo hasta la sangre de Zacarías hijo de Baraquías, a quien matasteis entre el templo y el altar.

that upon you may come all the righteous blood shed upon the earth from the blood of righteous Abel unto the blood of Zacharias son of Barachias, whom ye murdered between the temple and the altar.

36 D e cierto os digo que todo esto vendrá sobre esta generación. Lamento de Jesucristo sobre Jerusalén

Verily I say unto you, All these things shall come upon this generation.

37 ¡ Jerusalén, Jerusalén, que matas a los profetas, y apedreas a los que te son enviados! ¡Cuántas veces quise juntar a tus hijos, como la gallina junta sus polluelos debajo de las alas, y no quisiste!

O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that didst kill the prophets and stone those who are sent unto thee, how often I desired to gather thy children together, even as a hen gathers her chickens under her wings, and ye would not!

38 H e aquí que vuestra casa os es dejada desierta.

Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.

39 P orque os digo que desde ahora no me veréis más, hasta que digáis: Bendito el que viene en el nombre del Señor.

For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me from now on until ye shall say, Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord.
