1 ¶ Mejor es el buen nombre que el buen ungüento; y el día de la muerte que el día del nacimiento.

¶ A good name is better than precious ointment and the day of death than the day of one’s birth.

2 M ejor es ir a la casa del luto que a la casa del convite; porque aquello es el fin de todos los hombres; y el que vive se advertirá.

It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting, for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

3 M ejor es el pesar que la risa; porque con la tristeza del rostro se enmendará el corazón.

Sorrow is better than laughter; for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made whole.

4 E l corazón de los sabios está en la casa del luto; mas el corazón de los locos, en la casa del placer.

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of pleasure.

5 M ejor es oír la reprensión del sabio, que la canción de los locos.

It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools.

6 P orque la risa del loco es como el estrépito de las espinas debajo de la olla. Y también la risa o la prosperidad del loco es vanidad.

The laughter of the fool is as the crackling of thorns under a pot, and this also (the laughter or prosperity of the fool) is vanity.

7 ¶ Ciertamente la opresión hace enloquecer al sabio; y la dádiva corrompe el corazón.

¶ Surely oppression makes a wise man mad, and a gift destroys the heart.

8 M ejor es el fin del negocio que su principio; mejor es el sufrido de espíritu que el altivo de espíritu.

Better is the end of a thing than its beginning, and he who has suffered in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

9 N o te apresures en tu espíritu a enojarte; porque la ira reposa en el seno de los locos.

Do not be hasty in thy spirit to be angry, for anger rests in the bosom of fools.

10 N unca digas: ¿Cuál es la causa de que los tiempos pasados fueran mejores que éstos? Porque nunca de esto preguntarás con sabiduría.

Never say, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.

11 ¶ Buena es la ciencia con herencia; y es la excelencia de los que ven el sol.

¶ Knowledge is good with an inheritance and is the excellency of those that see the sun.

12 P orque en la sombra de la ciencia, y en la sombra del dinero reposa el hombre; mas la sabiduría excede en que da vida a sus poseedores.

For knowledge is a defence, and money is a defence; but wisdom excels in that it gives life to those that have it.

13 M ira la obra de Dios; porque ¿quién podrá enderezar lo que él torció?

Consider the work of God; for who can make straight that which he has twisted?

14 E n el día del bien goza del bien; y en el día del mal abre los ojos y aprende. Dios también hizo esto ( el día del mal ) delante de lo otro, para que el hombre no halle nada después de él.

In the day of good enjoy that which is good, but in the day of adversity open your eyes and learn: God also has made the one (the day of adversity) before the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.

15 T odo lo he visto en los días de mi vanidad. Justo hay que perece por su justicia, y hay impío que por su maldad alarga sus días.

All things have I seen in the days of my vanity: there is a just man that perishes for his righteousness, and there is a wicked man that prolongs his days by his wickedness.

16 N o seas demasiado legalista ni muy sabio en tus propios ojos, ¿por qué te destruirás?

Do not be too legalistic; neither make thyself over wise in thine own eyes: why should thou destroy thyself?

17 N o seas muy listo a condenar, ni seas loco; ¿por qué morirás en medio del hilo de tus empresas?

Do not be hasty to condemn, neither be thou foolish: why should thou die in the midst of thy labours?

18 B ueno es que tomes de esto, y también de aquello no apartes tu mano; porque el que a Dios teme, saldrá con todo.

It is good that thou should take hold of this; and also from the other not withdraw thy hand; for he that fears God shall come through with everything.

19 L a sabiduría fortifica al sabio más que diez poderosos príncipes que haya en la ciudad.

Wisdom strengthens the wise more than ten mighty men who are in the city.

20 C iertamente no hay hombre justo en la tierra, que haga el bien y nunca peque.

For surely there is not a just man upon earth that in doing good does not sin.

21 T ampoco apliques tu corazón a todas las cosas que se hablaren, para que no oigas a tu siervo que dice mal de ti;

Also do not take to heart all the words that are spoken lest thou hear thy slave speak evil of thee:

22 p orque tu corazón sabe que tú también dijiste mal de otros muchas veces.

For thine own heart knows that thou thyself likewise hast spoken evil of others many times.

23 ¶ Todas estas cosas probé con sabiduría, diciendo: Me haré sabio; mas ella se alejó de mí.

¶ All this I have proved by wisdom: I said, I will be wise, but it was far from me.

24 L ejos está lo que fue; y lo muy profundo ¿quién lo hallará?

That which has been is far off and that which is exceeding deep, who can find it out?

25 Y o he rodeado con mi corazón por saber, y examinar, e inquirir la sabiduría, y la razón; y por saber la maldad de la locura, y el desvarío del error;

I applied my heart to know and to search and to seek out wisdom and the reason of things, and to know the wickedness of folly and the madness of error;

26 y he hallado más amarga que la muerte a la mujer cuyo corazón es redes y lazos; y sus manos ligaduras. El que agrada a Dios escapará de ella; mas el pecador quedará preso en ella.

and I find more bitter than death the woman whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands are bonds; whosoever pleases God shall escape from her, but the sinner shall be held prisoner in her.

27 H e aquí, esto he hallado, dice el Predicador, pesando las cosas una por una para hallar la razón;

Behold, this I have found, saith the preacher, weighing things one by one to find out the answer,

28 l o que aún busca mi alma, y no encuentro: un hombre entre mil he hallado; mas mujer de todas éstas nunca hallé.

which my soul yet seeks, but I find not: one man among a thousand I have found, but a woman among all those I have not found.

29 H e aquí, solamente he hallado esto: que Dios hizo al hombre recto, mas ellos buscaron muchas perversiones.

Behold, this only have I found: that God has made man upright, but they have sought out many perversions.
