1 S tăpânul Domn mi-a mai arătat următorul lucru: am văzut un coş cu fructe coapte.

¶ Thus hath the Lord GOD showed unto me: and behold a basket of summer fruit.

2 E l m-a întrebat: – Ce vezi tu, Amos? – Un coş cu fructe coapte, am răspuns eu. Atunci Domnul mi-a zis: – Vine sfârşitul poporului Meu, Israel! Nu-l voi mai cruţa!

And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass over them any more.

3 Î n ziua aceea, zice Stăpânul Domn, cântecele de la Templu se vor preface în urlete. Vor fi o mulţime de hoituri aruncate peste tot! Tăcere!

And the cantors of the temple shall howl in that day, said the Lord GOD; there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.

4 A scultaţi aceasta, voi, care-i călcaţi în picioare pe sărmani şi-i prăpădiţi pe săracii din ţară.

¶ Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, and cut off the poor of the land,

5 V oi ziceţi: „Când va trece luna nouă, ca să putem vinde grâne? Cât mai este din Sabat, ca să deschidem grânarele, să micşorăm cantitatea, să mărim preţul, să măsluim cumpăna ca să înşelăm,

saying, When the month is over, we will sell the wheat; and after the sabbath day we will open the storehouse of bread, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit;

6 s ă-i cumpărăm pe săraci pe argint şi pe sărmani – pentru o pereche de sandale şi să vindem codină în loc de grâne?“

that we may buy the poor for money and the needy for a pair of shoes and sell the refuse of the wheat.

7 D omnul a jurat pe mândria lui Iacov: „Nu voi uita niciodată vreuna din faptele lui!“

The LORD has sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

8 „ Să nu tremure ţara din pricina aceasta şi să nu jelească toţi cei ce locuiesc în ea? Să nu se ridice ca Nilul tot ce este în ţară, să nu se învolbureze şi apoi să se retragă precum Râul Egiptului?

Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwells therein? and it shall all rise up as a flood, and it shall be cast out and sunk, as the river of Egypt.

9 Î n ziua aceea, zice Stăpânul Domn, voi face să apună soarele la amiază şi voi întuneca pământul în miezul zilei.

And it shall come to pass in that day, said the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will cover the earth with darkness in the clear day;

10 V oi preface sărbătorile voastre în bocet şi toate cântecele voastre – în cântece de jale. Voi face ca toate coapsele să fie acoperite cu saci şi toate capetele să fie rase. Voi face vremea aceea ca jalea pentru singurul fiu, iar sfârşitul ei – ca o zi amară.“

and I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation; and I will cause sackcloth to be brought up upon all loins and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son and the end thereof as a bitter day.

11 „ Iată, vin zile, zice Stăpânul Domn, când voi trimite foamete în ţară, dar nu foame după pâine şi nu sete după apă, ci după auzirea cuvintelor Domnului.

¶ Behold, the days come, said the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine to the earth, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:

12 E i vor umbla şovăind de la o mare la alta, vor cutreiera de la nord la răsărit, căutând Cuvântul Domnului, dar nu-l vor găsi.

and they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it.

13 Î n ziua aceea, fecioarele frumoase şi tinerii vor leşina de sete.

In that day the fair virgins and young men shall faint for thirst.

14 C ei ce obişnuiau să jure pe ruşinea Samariei şi să zică: «Viu este zeul tău, Dane!» sau «Vie este calea ta, Beer-Şeba!», aceia vor cădea şi nu se vor mai ridica.“

Those that swear by the guiltiness of Samaria and say, As thy God of Dan lives; and, As the way of Beersheba lives, even they shall fall, and never rise up again.
