1 A şa cum nu se potriveşte zăpada în timpul verii şi ploaia la seceriş, tot astfel nu se potriveşte nici onoarea pentru un prost.

¶ As snow in summer and as rain in harvest, so honour is not suited for a fool.

2 A şa cum sare vrabia încoace şi încolo şi cum zboară rândunica, tot astfel nu nimereşte nici blestemul neîntemeiat.

¶ As the sparrow in its wandering, as the swallow in its flight, so the curse causeless shall never come.

3 B iciul este pentru cal, căpăstrul pentru măgar, şi nuiaua pentru spinarea proştilor.

¶ A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool’s back.

4 N u-i răspunde prostului după prostia lui, ca nu cumva să fii tu însuţi ca el!

¶ Never answer a fool according to his folly lest thou also be like unto him.

5 R ăspunde-i prostului după prostia lui, ca nu cumva să se considere înţelept!

Answer the fool showing him his folly lest he be wise in his own conceit.

6 C el care trimite un mesaj printr-un prost îşi taie singur picioarele şi bea violenţă.

¶ He that gives responsibility to one who is not able to carry it out is like him that sends a message by the hand of a fool, and he shall drink the damage.

7 C a picioarele oloage, care atârnă neputincioase, aşa este un proverb în gura unor proşti.

Like unto the way that the one who is lame walks, so is a proverb in the mouth of the fool.

8 C a legarea unei pietre în praştie aşa este cinstirea unui prost.

As he that binds the stone in the sling, so is he that gives honour to a fool.

9 C a un tufiş de spini în mâna unui om beat aşa este un proverb în gura unui prost.

As thorns sunk into the hand of one who is drunk, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.

10 C a un arcaş care răneşte pe oricine, aşa este cel ce angajează un prost sau un trecător oarecare.

¶ The great God that formed all things rewards both the fool and transgressors.

11 C a un câine care se întoarce la voma lui, aşa îşi repetă şi prostul prostiile.

¶ As a dog returns to his vomit, so the fool returns to his folly.

12 A i văzut vreun om care se consideră înţelept? Este mai multă speranţă pentru un prost decât pentru el.

¶ Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

13 L eneşul spune: „Este un leu pe drum! Un leu fioros hoinăreşte pe străzi!“

¶ The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

14 A şa cum se întoarce uşa pe balamalele ei, tot astfel se întoarce şi leneşul în patul lui.

¶ As the door turns upon his hinges, so does the slothful upon his bed.

15 L eneşul îşi vâră mâna în blid dar este prea obosit să o ducă înapoi la gură.

¶ The slothful hides his hand in his bosom; it grieves him to bring it again to his mouth.

16 L eneşul se consideră mai înţelept decât şapte oameni care răspund cu înţelepciune.

¶ The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can give him counsel.

17 C a un om care prinde un câine de urechi, aşa este trecătorul care se bagă într-o ceartă ce nu-l priveşte.

¶ He that passes by and meddles with strife not belonging to him is like one that takes a dog by the ears.

18 C a un nebun care aruncă săgeţi aprinse şi ucigătoare,

¶ As a mad man who casts firebrands, arrows, and death,

19 a şa este omul care înşală pe semenul său şi spune: „Doar am glumit!“

so is the man that destroys his friend and says, Am I not in sport?

20 C ând nu mai sunt lemne, focul se stinge şi când nu mai este nici un bârfitor, cearta încetează.

¶ Where there is no wood, the fire goes out, so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceases.

21 D upă cum cărbunele face jar şi lemnul foc, tot astfel şi omul certăreţ stârneşte conflicte.

Charcoal for burning coals and wood for fire, and a contentious man to kindle strife.

22 C uvintele bârfitorului sunt ca nişte prăjituri; ele alunecă până în adâncul stomacului.

The words of a talebearer seem smooth, but they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

23 C a poleiala de argint peste un vas de lut aşa sunt buzele prefăcute şi o inimă rea.

¶ Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

24 C el ce urăşte se preface cu buzele lui, şi în inima lui pregăteşte înşelăciunea.

¶ He that hates dissembles with his lips and lays up deceit within him;

25 D eşi vorbirea lui este încântătoare, nu-l crede, căci şapte ticăloşii sunt în inima lui!

when he speaks fair, do not believe him, for there are seven abominations in his heart.

26 U ra lui poate fi ascunsă prin făţărnicie, dar răutatea lui va fi descoperită în adunare.

Even though his hatred is covered up in the desert, his wickedness shall be showed before the whole congregation.

27 C ine sapă o groapă va cădea în ea, iar piatra se întoarce chiar peste cel ce o rostogoleşte.

¶ Whosoever digs a pit shall fall therein, and he that rolls a stone, it will return upon him.

28 L imba mincinoasă urăşte pe cei răniţi de ea şi gura linguşitoare aduce ruina.

¶ A lying tongue hates those that are afflicted by it, and a flattering mouth works ruin.
