1 C omo nieve en el verano y como lluvia en la siega, así la honra no es apropiada para el necio.

¶ As snow in summer and as rain in harvest, so honour is not suited for a fool.

2 C omo el gorrión en su vagar y la golondrina en su vuelo así la maldición no viene sin causa.

¶ As the sparrow in its wandering, as the swallow in its flight, so the curse causeless shall never come.

3 E l látigo es para el caballo, la brida para el asno, y la vara para la espalda de los necios.

¶ A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool’s back.

4 N o respondas al necio de acuerdo con su necedad, para que no seas tú también como él.

¶ Never answer a fool according to his folly lest thou also be like unto him.

5 R esponde al necio según su necedad, para que no sea sabio ante sus propios ojos.

Answer the fool showing him his folly lest he be wise in his own conceit.

6 S e corta los pies y bebe violencia el que envía recado por mano de necio.

¶ He that gives responsibility to one who is not able to carry it out is like him that sends a message by the hand of a fool, and he shall drink the damage.

7 C omo las piernas que penden del lisiado, así es el proverbio en boca de los necios.

Like unto the way that the one who is lame walks, so is a proverb in the mouth of the fool.

8 C omo el que ata la piedra a la honda así es el que da honor al necio.

As he that binds the stone in the sling, so is he that gives honour to a fool.

9 C omo espina que se clava en la mano de un borracho, tal es el proverbio en boca de los necios.

As thorns sunk into the hand of one who is drunk, so is a proverb in the mouth of fools.

10 C omo arquero que a todos hiere, así es el que toma a sueldo al necio o a los que pasan.

¶ The great God that formed all things rewards both the fool and transgressors.

11 C omo perro que vuelve a su vómito es el necio que repite su necedad.

¶ As a dog returns to his vomit, so the fool returns to his folly.

12 ¿ Has visto a un hombre que se tiene por sabio ? Más esperanza hay para el necio que para él.

¶ Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him.

13 E l perezoso dice: Hay un león en el camino; hay un león en medio de la plaza.

¶ The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets.

14 C omo la puerta gira sobre sus goznes, así da vueltas el perezoso en su cama.

¶ As the door turns upon his hinges, so does the slothful upon his bed.

15 E l perezoso mete la mano en el plato, pero se fatiga de llevársela a la boca.

¶ The slothful hides his hand in his bosom; it grieves him to bring it again to his mouth.

16 E l perezoso es más sabio ante sus propios ojos que siete que den una respuesta discreta.

¶ The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can give him counsel.

17 C omo el que toma un perro por las orejas, así es el que pasa y se entremete en contienda que no es suya.

¶ He that passes by and meddles with strife not belonging to him is like one that takes a dog by the ears.

18 C omo el enloquecido que lanza teas encendidas, flechas y muerte,

¶ As a mad man who casts firebrands, arrows, and death,

19 a sí es el hombre que engaña a su prójimo, y dice: ¿Acaso no estaba yo bromeando ?

so is the man that destroys his friend and says, Am I not in sport?

20 P or falta de leña se apaga el fuego, y donde no hay chismoso, se calma la contienda.

¶ Where there is no wood, the fire goes out, so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceases.

21 C omo carbón para las brasas y leña para el fuego, así es el hombre rencilloso para encender contiendas.

Charcoal for burning coals and wood for fire, and a contentious man to kindle strife.

22 L as palabras del chismoso son como bocados deliciosos, y penetran hasta el fondo de las entrañas.

The words of a talebearer seem smooth, but they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.

23 C omo vasija de barro revestida de escoria de plata, así son los labios ardientes y el corazón perverso.

¶ Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross.

24 E l que odia, disimula con sus labios, mas en su corazón acumula engaño.

¶ He that hates dissembles with his lips and lays up deceit within him;

25 C uando su voz sea agradable, no lo creas, pues hay siete abominaciones en su corazón.

when he speaks fair, do not believe him, for there are seven abominations in his heart.

26 A unque su odio se cubra con engaño, su perversidad será descubierta en la asamblea.

Even though his hatred is covered up in the desert, his wickedness shall be showed before the whole congregation.

27 E l que cava un hoyo caerá en él, y el que hace rodar una piedra, sobre él volverá.

¶ Whosoever digs a pit shall fall therein, and he that rolls a stone, it will return upon him.

28 L a lengua mentirosa odia a los que oprime, y la boca lisonjera causa ruina.

¶ A lying tongue hates those that are afflicted by it, and a flattering mouth works ruin.
