1 M ientras Israel habitaba en Sitim, el pueblo comenzó a prostituirse con las hijas de Moab.

¶ And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to fornicate with the daughters of Moab,

2 Y éstas invitaron al pueblo a los sacrificios que hacían a sus dioses, y el pueblo comió y se postró ante sus dioses.

who called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people ate and bowed down to their gods.

3 A sí Israel se unió a Baal de Peor, y se encendió la ira del Señor contra Israel.

And Israel joined himself unto Baalpeor; and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel.

4 Y el Señor dijo a Moisés: Toma a todos los jefes del pueblo y ejecútalos delante del Señor a plena luz del día, para que se aparte de Israel la ardiente ira del Señor.

And the LORD said unto Moses, Take all the princes of the people and disjoint them before the LORD hanging them from a tree against the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may be turned away from Israel.

5 E ntonces Moisés dijo a los jueces de Israel: Cada uno de vosotros mate a aquellos de los suyos que se han unido a Baal de Peor.

Then Moses said unto the judges of Israel, Slay ye every one his men that were joined unto Baalpeor.

6 Y he aquí que un hombre, uno de los hijos de Israel, vino y presentó una madianita a sus parientes, a la vista de Moisés y a la vista de toda la congregación de los hijos de Israel, que lloraban a la puerta de la tienda de reunión.

¶ Then, behold, one of the sons of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, who were weeping before the door of the tabernacle of the testimony.

7 Y cuando lo vio Finees, hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, se levantó de en medio de la congregación, y tomando una lanza en su mano,

And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand;

8 f ue tras el hombre de Israel, entró en la alcoba y los traspasó a los dos, al hombre de Israel y a la mujer por su vientre. Y así cesó la plaga sobre los hijos de Israel.

and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel and the woman through her belly. So the plague of the sons of Israel was stayed.

9 Y los que murieron por la plaga fueron veinticuatro mil.

And those that died in that plague were twenty-four thousand.

10 E ntonces habló el Señor a Moisés, diciendo:

Then the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,

11 F inees, hijo de Eleazar, hijo del sacerdote Aarón, ha apartado mi furor de los hijos de Israel porque demostró su celo por mí entre ellos, y en mi celo no he destruido a los hijos de Israel.

Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned my wrath away from the sons of Israel, being zealous for my sake among them, therefore I did not consume the sons of Israel in my jealousy.

12 P or tanto, di: “He aquí, yo le doy mi pacto de paz;

Because of this say unto them, Behold, I establish my covenant of peace with him;

13 y será para él y para su descendencia después de él, un pacto de sacerdocio perpetuo, porque tuvo celo por su Dios e hizo expiación por los hijos de Israel.”

and he shall have, and his seed after him, even the covenant of the everlasting priesthood because he was zealous for his God and reconciled the sons of Israel.

14 E l nombre del hombre de Israel que fue muerto con la madianita era Zimri, hijo de Salu, jefe de una casa paterna de Simeón.

Now the name of the Israelite that was slain, even that was slain with the Midianite, was Zimri, the son of Salu, a prince of a family of the tribe of Simeon.

15 Y el nombre de la mujer madianita que fue muerta era Cozbi, hija de Zur, el cual era cabeza del pueblo de una casa paterna en Madián.

And the name of the Midianite woman that was slain was Cozbi, the daughter of Zur, prince of peoples, of the house of the father, in Midian.

16 E ntonces habló el Señor a Moisés, diciendo:

¶ And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,

17 H ostigad a los madianitas y heridlos;

Declare war on the Midianites and smite them;

18 p ues ellos os han sido hostiles con sus engaños, con los que os engañaron en el asunto de Peor, y en el asunto de Cozbi, hija del jefe de Madián, su hermana, que fue muerta el día de la plaga por causa de Peor.

for they treated you as enemies with their wiles, with which they have beguiled you in the matter of Peor, and in the matter of Cozbi, daughter of the prince of Midian, their sister, who was slain in the day of the plague for Peor’s sake.
