1 Y aconteció que en el año catorce del rey Ezequías, subió Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, contra todas las ciudades fortificadas de Judá, y las tomó.

¶ Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defenced cities of Judah and took them.

2 Y el rey de Asiria envió desde Laquis a Jerusalén, al Rabsaces con un gran ejército, contra el rey Ezequías. Y se colocó junto al acueducto del estanque superior que está en la calzada del campo del Batanero.

And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem unto king Hezekiah with a great army. And he camped by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the washer’s field.

3 E ntonces Eliaquim, hijo de Hilcías, mayordomo de la casa real, el escriba Sebna y el cronista Joa, hijo de Asaf, salieron a él.

Then came forth unto him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, who was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph’s son, the writer of chronicles.

4 Y el Rabsaces les dijo: Decid ahora a Ezequías: “Así dice el gran rey, el rey de Asiria: ‘¿Qué confianza es ésta que tú tienes ?

And Rabshakeh said unto them, Say ye now to Hezekiah, Thus saith the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this in which thou dost trust?

5 ‘ Yo digo: “ Tu consejo y poderío para la guerra sólo son palabras vacías.” Ahora pues, ¿en quién confías que te has rebelado contra mí ?

I say, sayest thou, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom dost thou trust that thou dost rebel against me?

6 ‘ He aquí, tú confías en el báculo de esta caña quebrada, es decir, en Egipto, en el cual, si un hombre se apoya, penetrará en su mano y la traspasará. Así es Faraón, rey de Egipto, para todos los que confían en él.

Behold, thou dost trust in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt upon which if a man leans, it will go into his hand and pierce it, so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.

7 ‘ Pero si me decís: “Nosotros confiamos en el Señor nuestro Dios,” ¿no es El aquel cuyos lugares altos y cuyos altares Ezequías ha quitado y ha dicho a Judá y a Jerusalén: “Adoraréis delante de este altar”?

But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God; is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?

8 ‘ Ahora pues, te ruego que llegues a un acuerdo con mi señor el rey de Asiria, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si por tu parte puedes poner jinetes sobre ellos.

Now therefore give pledges, I pray thee, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give thee two thousand horses, if thou art able on thy part to set riders upon them.

9 ‘ ¿Cómo, pues, puedes rechazar a un oficial de los menores de los siervos de mi señor, y confiar en Egipto para tener carros y hombres de a caballo ?

How, therefore, wilt thou turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s slaves even if thou art trusting in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

10 ‘ ¿He subido ahora sin el consentimiento del Señor contra esta tierra para destruirla? El Señor me dijo: “Sube contra esta tierra y destrúyela.”’”

And peradventure am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? The LORD said unto me, Go up against this land and destroy it.

11 E ntonces Eliaquim, Sebna y Joa dijeron al Rabsaces: Te rogamos que hables a tus siervos en arameo porque nosotros lo entendemos, y no nos hables en la lengua de Judá a oídos del pueblo que está sobre la muralla.

¶ Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah unto Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray thee, unto thy slaves in the Syrian language, for we understand it, and do not speak to us in the Jewish language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

12 P ero el Rabsaces dijo: ¿Acaso me ha enviado mi señor para hablar estas palabras sólo a tu señor y a ti, y no a los hombres que están sentados en la muralla, condenados a comer sus propios excrementos y a beber su propia orina con vosotros?

But Rabshakeh said, Has my master sent me to thy master and to thee to speak these words? Has he not sent me to the men that sit upon the wall that they may eat their own dung and drink their own piss with you?

13 E l Rabsaces se puso en pie, gritó a gran voz en la lengua de Judá, y dijo: Escuchad las palabras del gran rey, el rey de Asiria.

Then Rabshakeh stood and cried with a loud voice in the Jewish language and said, Hear ye the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.

14 A sí dice el rey: “Que no os engañe Ezequías, porque él no os podrá librar;

Thus saith the king, Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he shall not be able to deliver you.

15 n i que Ezequías os haga confiar en el Señor, diciendo: ‘Ciertamente el Señor nos librará, y esta ciudad no será entregada en manos del rey de Asiria.’

Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us, this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

16 “ No escuchéis a Ezequías, porque así dice el rey de Asiria: ‘Haced la paz conmigo y salid a mí, y coma cada uno de su vid y cada uno de su higuera, y beba cada cual de las aguas de su cisterna,

Do not hearken unto Hezekiah, for thus saith the king of Assyria, Make peace with me and come out to me and eat each one of his vine and each one of his fig tree and drink each one the waters of his own cistern

17 h asta que yo venga y os lleve a una tierra como vuestra tierra, tierra de grano y de mosto, tierra de pan y de viñas.’

until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

18 “ Cuidado, no sea que Ezequías os engañe, diciendo: ‘El Señor nos librará.’ ¿Acaso alguno de los dioses de las naciones ha librado su tierra de la mano del rey de Asiria?

Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, The LORD will deliver us. Have any of the gods of the Gentiles delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

19 “ ¿Dónde están los dioses de Hamat y de Arfad ? ¿Dónde están los dioses de Sefarvaim ? ¿Cuándo han librado ellos a Samaria de mi mano?

Where is the god of Hamath and Arphad? Where is the god of Sepharvaim? Have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?

20 “ ¿Quiénes de entre todos los dioses de estas tierras han librado su tierra de mi mano, para que el Señor libre a Jerusalén de mi mano?”

What god is there among all the gods of these lands that have delivered their land out of my hand that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

21 P ero ellos se quedaron callados y no le respondieron palabra alguna; porque el rey había dado un mandato, diciendo: No le respondáis.

But they held their peace and did not answer him a word, for the king had commanded thus, saying, Answer him not.

22 E ntonces Eliaquim, hijo de Hilcías, mayordomo de la casa real, el escriba Sebna y el cronista Joa, hijo de Asaf, fueron a Ezequías con sus vestidos rasgados, y le relataron las palabras del Rabsaces.

Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe and Joah, the son of Asaph, the writer of chronicles, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
