1 D upă cinci zile, marele preot Ananias s-a coborât împreună cu câţiva dintre bătrâni şi cu un anume avocat Tertulus şi au adus acuzaţii împotriva lui Pavel, înaintea guvernatorului.

¶ And after five days Ananias, the prince of the priests, descended with the elders and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.

2 C ând Pavel a fost chemat, Tertulus a început să-l acuze astfel: „Datorită ţie, noi avem parte de multă pace şi prin prevederile tale s-au făcut multe reforme pentru neamul nostru.

And when he was called forth, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying, Seeing that by thee we enjoy great peace and that very worthy deeds are done unto this nation by thy prudence,

3 N oi recunoaştem aceasta pretutindeni şi oricând, cu deplină mulţumire, prea alesule Felix.

we accept it always and in all places, most noble Felix, with all thankfulness.

4 D ar ca să nu te reţin prea mult, te rog să ne asculţi puţin, în bunăvoinţa ta!

Notwithstanding, that I be not further tedious unto thee, I pray thee that thou would hear us of thy clemency a few words.

5 A m găsit pe omul acesta ca fiind o adevărată molimă; el stârneşte răscoale printre toţi iudeii din toată lumea, este conducătorul partidei nazarinenilor

For we have found this man a pestilent fellow and a mover of sedition among all the Jews throughout the world and prince of the seditious sect of the Nazarenes,

6 ş i a încercat să profaneze chiar şi Templul. Noi l-am prins (şi am vrut să-l judecăm după Legea noastră.

who also has gone about to profane the temple, whom we took and would have judged according to our law.

7 D ar a venit tribunul Lisias şi l-a smuls cu mare violenţă din mâinile noastre,

But the tribunal Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands,

8 p oruncind acuzatorilor lui să vină înaintea ta). Dacă-l vei interoga, vei putea afla tu însuţi despre toate aceste lucruri de care noi îl acuzăm!“

commanding his accusers to come unto thee; by examining of whom thou may take knowledge of all these things, of which we accuse him.

9 I udeii s-au alăturat şi ei acuzaţiei, afirmând că toate acestea erau întocmai.

And the Jews also assented, saying that these things were so.

10 C ând guvernatorul i-a făcut semn să vorbească, Pavel i-a răspuns: „Ştiind că de mulţi ani eşti judecătorul acestui neam, sunt încurajat în apărarea mea.

¶ Then Paul, after the governor had beckoned unto him to speak, answered, Forasmuch as I know that thou hast been of many years a judge unto this nation, I do the more cheerfully answer for myself;

11 D upă cum poţi afla şi tu, nu sunt mai mult de douăsprezece zile de când m-am suit să mă închin la Ierusalim.

because thou art able to understand that there have been but twelve days since I went up to Jerusalem to worship.

12 Ş i nu m-au găsit nici certându-mă cu cineva în Templu, nici întărâtând mulţimea în sinagogi sau prin cetate.

And they neither found me in the temple disputing with any man, neither raising up the people, neither in the synagogues, nor in the city,

13 A şa că ei nici nu-ţi pot dovedi lucrurile de care mă acuză acum.

neither can they prove the things of which they now accuse me.

14 Î ţi mărturisesc însă că eu mă închin Dumnezeului strămoşilor noştri, potrivit cu Calea despre care ei spun că este o «partidă», şi cred toate lucrurile care sunt în acord cu Legea şi sunt scrise în Profeţi.

But this I confess unto thee, that after the way which they call a sect, so worship I the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the law and in the prophets,

15 Ş i am aceeaşi nădejde în Dumnezeu pe care o au şi ei, că va fi o înviere a celor drepţi şi a celor nedrepţi.

and have hope toward God, which they themselves also allow, that there shall be a resurrection of the dead, both of the just and unjust.

16 D e aceea mă străduiesc să am întotdeauna o conştiinţă curată înaintea lui Dumnezeu şi înaintea oamenilor.

And for this reason do I exercise myself to have always a conscience void of offense toward God and toward men.

17 D upă o lipsă de mai mulţi ani, am venit să fac milostenii neamului meu şi să aduc daruri.

Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation and offerings.

18 Î n timp ce făceam aceasta, m-au găsit curăţit în Templu, nu cu mulţime, nici cu zarvă.

Whereupon certain Jews from Asia found me purified in the temple, neither with multitude, nor with tumult,

19 E rau şi nişte iudei din Asia, care ar fi trebuit să fie prezenţi înaintea ta şi să mă acuze, dacă ar fi avut ceva împotriva mea!

who ought to have been here before thee and object if they had anything against me.

20 S au să spună înşişi aceştia ce nelegiuire au găsit în mine, când am stat înaintea Sinedriului,

Or else let these same here say if they have found any evil doing in me, while I stood before the council,

21 a fară numai de strigătul acesta pe care l-am scos în timp ce stăteam în mijlocul lor: «Cu privire la învierea morţilor sunt judecat eu astăzi înaintea voastră!»“

except it be for this one voice, that I cried out standing among them, Touching the resurrection of the dead, I am called in question by you this day.

22 A tunci Felix, care era bine informat cu privire la Cale, i-a amânat zicând: „Voi decide în privinţa voastră, când va veni tribunul Lisias!“

¶ And when Felix heard these things, he deferred them, saying, I shall have more information regarding that way, when Lysias the tribunal shall come down, Then I will know the uttermost of your matter.

23 A poruncit centurionului să-l ţină sub pază pe Pavel, dar să-i lase o oarecare libertate şi să nu interzică la nimeni din ai lui să-i slujească.

And he commanded a centurion to keep Paul and to let him have liberty, and that he should forbid none of his own to minister or come unto him.

24 D upă câteva zile, Felix a venit împreună cu soţia lui, Drusila, care era iudeică, a trimis după Pavel şi l-a ascultat despre credinţa în Cristos Isus.

And after certain days when Felix came with his wife Drusilla, who was a Jewess, he sent for Paul and heard of him the faith which is in Christ.

25 Î nsă, în timp ce Pavel vorbea despre dreptate, despre înfrânare şi despre judecata care vine, Felix s-a îngrozit şi a zis: „Acum du-te; când voi mai avea timp, te voi chema.“

And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come, Felix trembled and answered, Go away for this time; when I have a convenient season, I will call for thee.

26 Î n acelaşi timp, el spera că Pavel îi va da bani şi de aceea trimitea deseori după el şi stătea de vorbă cu el.

He hoped also that money should have been given him from Paul, that he might loose him; therefore he sent for him many times and communed with him.

27 D oi ani au trecut astfel, după care, în locul lui Felix, a venit Porcius Festus. Vrând să câştige favoarea iudeilor, Felix l-a lăsat pe Pavel în închisoare.

But after two years Felix received Porcius Festus as successor; and Felix, wanting to win the grace of the Jews, left Paul bound.
