1 O mul născut din femeie are zile puţine, dar pline de necaz.

¶ Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.

2 R ăsare ca o floare şi se usucă; fuge ca o umbră şi nu se mai vede.

He comes forth like an open flower and is cut down; he flees as a shadow and does not remain.

3 A i Tu ochii aţintiţi asupra unui astfel de om? Îl chemi Tu la judecată cu Tine?

And dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one and bring me into judgment with thee?

4 C ine poate scoate ceva curat din ceva necurat? Nimeni!

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one.

5 Z ilele omului sunt hotărâte. Tu cunoşti numărul lunilor lui şi i-ai pus hotare pe care nu le poate trece.

Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass.

6 A şa că nu te mai uita la el şi lasă-l singur să se bucure ca un lucrător de ziua lui.

If thou should leave him, he will cease to exist; until then, he shall desire, as a hireling, his day.

7 P entru un copac tot mai este nădejde: dacă este tăiat, el va răsări din nou şi lăstarii lui nu încetează să reapară.

¶ For there is yet hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again and that its tender branch will not cease.

8 D eşi rădăcina îi îmbătrâneşte în pământ şi-i piere trunchiul în ţărână,

Though its root waxes old in the earth and its trunk is dead in the ground,

9 l a mireasma apei va înmuguri şi va da ramuri ca o plantă.

at the scent of water it will bud and bring forth boughs like a new plant.

10 F iinţa umană, însă, când moare, îşi pierde toată vlaga; omul, după ce îşi dă ultima suflare, nu mai este.

But when man shall die and be cut off, and the man shall perish, where shall he be?

11 D upă cum apele pier din mare, iar râul seacă şi se usucă,

The waters from the sea went, and the river ran out, it dried up.

12 t ot aşa omul se culcă şi nu se mai ridică, cât vor fi cerurile nu se mai trezeşte, nici nu se mai scoală din somnul lui.

So man lies down and does not rise; until there is no heaven, they shall not awake nor be raised out of their sleep.

13 O ! de m-ai ascunde în Locuinţa Morţilor, de m-ai acoperi până Îţi trece mânia şi de mi-ai hotărî o vreme când să-Ţi aminteşti de mine!

O that thou would hide me in Sheol, that thou would keep me covered until thy wrath is past, that thou would appoint me a set time and remember me!

14 D acă un om moare, va trăi el din nou? În toate zilele trudei mele, aş aştepta să-mi vină eliberarea.

If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time I will wait until my transformation comes.

15 A tunci mă vei chema şi-Ţi voi răspunde; vei tânji după lucrarea mâinilor Tale.

Then thou shalt call, and I will answer thee; thou wilt have a desire towards the work of thine hands.

16 A tunci îmi vei număra paşii şi nu-mi vei mai ţine în seamă păcatul;

¶ For now thou dost number my steps; thou dost not open up my sin.

17 v ei pecetlui fărădelegile mele într-un sac şi-mi vei acoperi nedreptatea.

My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou dost sew up my iniquity.

18 D ar aşa cum munţii cad şi se surpă, iar stânca e mutată din locul ei

And certainly the mountain that falls is undone, and the rocks are removed out of their place.

19 ş i aşa cum apa sapă în piatră, iar torenţii spală pământul, tot aşa distrugi Tu nădejdea omului.

The impetuous waters break the stones and wash away the dust of the earth; in like manner thou dost cause man to lose hope.

20 Î l învingi pentru totdeauna şi el se duce; îi schimbi înfăţişarea şi apoi îl izgoneşti.

Thou shalt be stronger than him for ever, and he passes; thou dost change his countenance and send him away.

21 D acă fiii lui sunt onoraţi, el nu ştie, dacă sunt înjosiţi, el nu vede.

His sons shall be honoured and he shall not know of it; or they shall be afflicted, but he shall not perceive of them.

22 E l simte doar durerea trupului său şi suferă doar pentru sine.“

But while his flesh is upon him, he shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
