1 D er Mensch, vom Weibe geboren, lebt kurze Zeit und ist voll Unruhe,

¶ Man that is born of a woman is of few days and full of trouble.

2 g eht auf wie eine Blume und fällt ab, flieht wie ein Schatten und bleibt nicht.

He comes forth like an open flower and is cut down; he flees as a shadow and does not remain.

3 U nd du tust deine Augen über einen solchen auf, daß du mich vor dir ins Gericht ziehest.

And dost thou open thine eyes upon such a one and bring me into judgment with thee?

4 K ann wohl ein Reiner kommen von den Unreinen? Auch nicht einer.

Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one.

5 E r hat seine bestimmte Zeit, die Zahl seiner Monden steht bei dir; du hast ein Ziel gesetzt, das wird er nicht überschreiten.

Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass.

6 S o tu dich von ihm, daß er Ruhe habe, bis daß seine Zeit komme, deren er wie ein Tagelöhner wartet.

If thou should leave him, he will cease to exist; until then, he shall desire, as a hireling, his day.

7 E in Baum hat Hoffnung, wenn er schon abgehauen ist, daß er sich wieder erneue, und seine Schößlinge hören nicht auf.

¶ For there is yet hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again and that its tender branch will not cease.

8 O b seine Wurzel in der Erde veraltet und sein Stamm im Staub erstirbt,

Though its root waxes old in the earth and its trunk is dead in the ground,

9 s o grünt er doch wieder vom Geruch des Wassers und wächst daher, als wäre er erst gepflanzt.

at the scent of water it will bud and bring forth boughs like a new plant.

10 A ber der Mensch stirbt und ist dahin; er verscheidet, und wo ist er?

But when man shall die and be cut off, and the man shall perish, where shall he be?

11 W ie ein Wasser ausläuft aus dem See, und wie ein Strom versiegt und vertrocknet,

The waters from the sea went, and the river ran out, it dried up.

12 s o ist ein Mensch, wenn er sich legt, und wird nicht aufstehen und wird nicht aufwachen, solange der Himmel bleibt, noch von seinem Schlaf erweckt werden.

So man lies down and does not rise; until there is no heaven, they shall not awake nor be raised out of their sleep.

13 A ch daß du mich in der Hölle verdecktest und verbärgest, bis dein Zorn sich lege, und setztest mir ein Ziel, daß du an mich dächtest.

O that thou would hide me in Sheol, that thou would keep me covered until thy wrath is past, that thou would appoint me a set time and remember me!

14 W ird ein toter Mensch wieder leben? Alle Tage meines Streites wollte ich harren, bis daß meine Veränderung komme!

If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time I will wait until my transformation comes.

15 D u würdest rufen und ich dir antworten; es würde dich verlangen nach dem Werk deiner Hände.

Then thou shalt call, and I will answer thee; thou wilt have a desire towards the work of thine hands.

16 J etzt aber zählst du meine Gänge. Hast du nicht acht auf meine Sünden?

¶ For now thou dost number my steps; thou dost not open up my sin.

17 D u hast meine Übertretungen in ein Bündlein versiegelt und meine Missetat zusammengefaßt.

My transgression is sealed up in a bag, and thou dost sew up my iniquity.

18 Z erfällt doch ein Berg und vergeht, und ein Fels wird von seinem Ort versetzt;

And certainly the mountain that falls is undone, and the rocks are removed out of their place.

19 W asser wäscht Steine weg, und seine Fluten flößen die Erde weg: aber des Menschen Hoffnung ist verloren;

The impetuous waters break the stones and wash away the dust of the earth; in like manner thou dost cause man to lose hope.

20 d enn du stößest ihn gar um, daß er dahinfährt, veränderst sein Wesen und lässest ihn fahren.

Thou shalt be stronger than him for ever, and he passes; thou dost change his countenance and send him away.

21 S ind seine Kinder in Ehren, das weiß er nicht; oder ob sie gering sind, des wird er nicht gewahr.

His sons shall be honoured and he shall not know of it; or they shall be afflicted, but he shall not perceive of them.

22 N ur sein eigen Fleisch macht ihm Schmerzen, und seine Seele ist ihm voll Leides.

But while his flesh is upon him, he shall have pain, and his soul within him shall mourn.
