1 U nd da das Jahr um kam, zur Zeit, wann die Könige pflegen auszuziehen, sandte David Joab und seine Knechte mit ihm das ganze Israel, daß sie die Kinder Ammon verderbten und Rabba belagerten. David aber blieb zu Jerusalem.

¶ And it came to pass, after the year was expired, at the time when kings go forth to battle, that David sent Joab and his slaves with him and all Israel, and they destroyed the sons of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David tarried still at Jerusalem.

2 U nd es begab sich, daß David um den Abend aufstand von seinem Lager und ging auf dem Dach des Königshauses und sah vom Dach ein Weib sich waschen; und das Weib war sehr schöner Gestalt.

And it came to pass one evening, that David arose from off his bed and walked upon the roof of the king’s house, and from the roof he saw a woman washing herself, and the woman was very beautiful to look upon.

3 U nd David sandte hin und ließ nach dem Weibe fragen, und man sagte: Ist das nicht Bath-Seba, die Tochter Eliams, das Weib des Urias, des Hethiters?

And David sent and enquired after the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah, the Hittite?

4 U nd David sandte Boten hin und ließ sie holen. Und da sie zu ihm hineinkam, schlief er bei ihr. Sie aber reinigte sich von ihrer Unreinigkeit und kehrte wieder zu ihrem Hause.

And David sent messengers and took her, and she came in unto him, and he lay with her. Then she purified herself from her uncleanness, and she returned unto her house.

5 U nd das Weib ward schwanger und sandte hin und ließ David verkündigen und sagen: Ich bin schwanger geworden.

And the woman conceived and sent and told David and said, I am with child.

6 D avid aber sandte zu Joab: Sende zu mir Uria, den Hethiter. Und Joab sandte Uria zu David.

¶ Then David sent to Joab, saying, Send me Uriah the Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David.

7 U nd da Uria zu ihm kam, fragte David, ob es mit Joab und mit dem Volk und mit dem Streit wohl stünde?

And when Uriah had come unto him, David asked him how Joab was and how the people were and how the war prospered.

8 U nd David sprach zu Uria: Gehe hinab in dein Haus und wasche deine Füße. Und da Uria zu des Königs Haus hinausging, folgte ihm nach des Königs Geschenk.

And David said to Uriah, Go down to thy house and wash thy feet. And Uriah departed out of the king’s house, and royal food was sent unto him.

9 A ber Uria legte sich schlafen vor der Tür des Königshauses, da alle Knechte seines Herrn lagen, und ging nicht hinab in sein Haus.

But Uriah slept at the door of the king’s house with all the slaves of his lord and did not go down to his house.

10 D a man aber David ansagte: Uria ist nicht hinab in sein Haus gegangen, sprach David zu ihm: Bist du nicht über Feld hergekommen? Warum bist du nicht hinab in dein Haus gegangen?

And when they had told David, saying, Uriah did not go down unto his house, David said unto Uriah, Didst thou not come from thy journey? Why then didst thou not go down to thy house?

11 U ria aber sprach zu David: Die Lade und Israel und Juda bleiben in Zelten, und Joab, mein Herr, und meines Herrn Knechte liegen im Felde, und ich sollte in mein Haus gehen, daß ich äße und tränke und bei meinem Weibe läge? So wahr du lebst und deine Seele lebt, ich tue solches nicht.

And Uriah said unto David, The ark and Israel and Judah abide in tents, and my lord Joab and the slaves of my lord, are encamped in the open fields; shall I then go into my house, to eat and to drink and to lie with my wife? By thy life and by the life of thy soul, I will not do this thing.

12 D avid sprach zu Uria: So bleibe auch heute hier; morgen will ich dich lassen gehen. So blieb Uria zu Jerusalem des Tages und des andern dazu.

And David said to Uriah, Tarry here today also, and tomorrow I will let thee depart. So Uriah abode in Jerusalem that day and the next day.

13 U nd David lud ihn, daß er vor ihm aß und trank, und machte ihn trunken. Aber des Abends ging er aus, daß er sich schlafen legte auf sein Lager mit seines Herrn Knechten, und ging nicht hinab in sein Haus.

And when David had called him, he ate and drank before him, and he made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his bed with the slaves of his lord but did not go down to his house.

14 D es Morgens schrieb David einen Brief an Joab und sandte ihn durch Uria.

¶ And it came to pass in the morning, that David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it by the hand of Uriah.

15 E r schrieb aber also in den Brief: Stellt Uria an den Streit, da er am härtesten ist, und wendet euch hinter ihm ab, daß er erschlagen werde und sterbe.

And he wrote in the letter, saying, Set Uriah in the forefront of the hottest battle and retire from him, that he may be smitten and die.

16 A ls nun Joab um die Stadt lag, stellte er Uria an den Ort, wo er wußte, daß streitbare Männer waren.

And it came to pass, when Joab observed the city, that he assigned Uriah unto a place where he knew that the most valiant men were.

17 U nd da die Männer der Stadt herausfielen und stritten wider Joab, fielen etliche des Volks von den Knechten Davids, und Uria, der Hethiter, starb auch.

And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab, and some of the people of the slaves of David fell, and Uriah the Hittite died also.

18 D a sandte Joab hin und ließ David ansagen allen Handel des Streits

Then Joab sent and told David all the things concerning the war

19 u nd gebot dem Boten und sprach: Wenn du allen Handel des Streits hast ausgeredet mit dem König

and charged the messenger, saying, When thou hast finished telling the matters of the war unto the king,

20 u nd siehst, daß der König sich erzürnt und zu dir spricht: Warum habt ihr euch so nahe zur Stadt gemacht mit dem Streit? Wißt ihr nicht, wie man pflegt von der Mauer zu schießen?

and if the king begins to be angry and he should say unto thee, Why did you approach so near unto the city when ye fought? Did ye not know that which they can throw down from the wall?

21 W er schlug Abimelech, den Sohn Jerubbeseths? Warf nicht ein Weib einen Mühlstein auf ihn von der Mauer, daß er starb zu Thebez? Warum habt ihr euch so nahe zur Mauer gemacht? so sollst du sagen: Dein Knecht Uria, der Hethiter, ist auch tot.

Who smote Abimelech, the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast a piece of a millstone upon him from the wall, that he died in Thebez? Why did you go near the wall? Then thou shalt say, Thy slave Uriah, the Hittite, is dead also.

22 D er Bote ging hin und kam und sagte an David alles, darum ihn Joab gesandt hatte.

So the messenger went and came and told David all that Joab had sent him for.

23 U nd der Bote sprach zu David: Die Männer nahmen überhand wider uns und fielen zu uns heraus aufs Feld; wir aber waren an ihnen bis vor die Tür des Tors;

And the messenger said unto David, Surely the men prevailed against us and came out unto us into the field, and we made them retreat unto the entering of the gate.

24 u nd die Schützen schossen von der Mauer auf deine Knechte und töteten etliche von des Königs Knechten; dazu ist Uria, der Hethiter, auch tot.

And the archers shot from off the wall upon thy slaves, and some of the king’s slaves are dead, and thy slave Uriah, the Hittite, is dead also.

25 D avid sprach zum Boten: So sollst du zu Joab sagen: Laß dir das nicht übel gefallen; denn das Schwert frißt jetzt diesen, jetzt jenen. Fahre fort mit dem Streit wider die Stadt, daß du sie zerbrechest, und seid getrost.

Then David said unto the messenger, Thus shalt thou say unto Joab, Let not this thing displease thee, for the sword devours one as well as another; strengthen the battle against the city until it is overthrown and encourage thou him.

26 U nd da Urias Weib hörte, daß ihr Mann, Uria, tot war, trug sie Leid um ihren Eheherrn.

And when the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah, her husband, was dead, she mourned for her husband.

27 D a sie aber ausgetrauert hatte, sandte David hin und ließ sie in sein Haus holen, und sie ward sein Weib und gebar ihm einen Sohn. Aber die Tat gefiel dem HERRN übel, die David tat.

And when the mourning was past, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife and gave birth to a son unto him. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD.
