1 E inen Alten schilt nicht, sondern ermahne ihn als einen Vater, die Jungen als Brüder,

¶ Rebuke not an elder, but intreat him as a father, and the younger men as brethren,

2 D ie alten Weiber als Mütter, die jungen als Schwestern mit aller Keuschheit.

the elder women as mothers, the younger as sisters, with all purity.

3 E hre die Witwen, welche rechte Witwen sind.

¶ Honour widows that are widows indeed.

4 S o aber eine Witwe Enkel oder Kinder hat, solche laß zuvor lernen, ihre eigenen Häuser göttlich regieren und den Eltern Gleiches vergelten; denn das ist wohl getan und angenehm vor Gott.

But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let those learn first to govern their house in piety and to recompense their parents, for this is honest and pleasing before God.

5 D as ist aber die rechte Witwe, die einsam ist, die ihre Hoffnung auf Gott stellt und bleibt am Gebet und Flehen Tag und Nacht.

Now she that is a widow indeed and desolate, trusts in God, and is diligent in supplications and prayers night and day,

6 W elche aber in Wollüsten lebt, die ist lebendig tot.

but she that lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.

7 S olches gebiete, auf daß sie untadelig seien.

Therefore command these things, that they may be blameless.

8 S o aber jemand die Seinen, sonderlich seine Hausgenossen, nicht versorgt, der hat den Glauben verleugnet und ist ärger denn ein Heide.

But if any provide not for his own and specially for those of his own house, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

9 L aß keine Witwe erwählt werden unter sechzig Jahren, und die da gewesen sei eines Mannes Weib,

Let a widow be placed on the list being not less than sixty years old, having been the wife of one man,

10 u nd die ein Zeugnis habe guter Werke: so sie Kinder aufgezogen hat, so sie gastfrei gewesen ist, so sie der Heiligen Füße gewaschen hat, so sie den Trübseligen Handreichung getan hat, so sie in allem guten Werk nachgekommen ist.

having a good testimony of good works, if she has brought up well her children, if she has exercised hospitality, if she has washed the feet of the saints, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.

11 D er jungen Witwen aber entschlage dich; denn wenn sie geil geworden sind wider Christum, so wollen sie freien

But the younger widows refuse, for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they desire to marry,

12 u nd haben ihr Urteil, daß sie den ersten Glauben gebrochen haben.

having condemnation, because they have cast off their first faith.

13 D aneben sind sie faul und lernen umlaufen durch die Häuser; nicht allein aber sind sie faul sondern auch geschwätzig und vorwitzig und reden, was nicht sein soll.

And reject also the idle, who have learned to wander about from house to house, and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

14 S o will ich nun, daß die jungen Witwen freien, Kinder zeugen, haushalten, dem Widersacher keine Ursache geben zu schelten.

I desire therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, govern the house, giving no occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

15 D enn es sind schon etliche umgewandt dem Satan nach.

For some are already turned back after Satan.

16 S o aber ein Gläubiger oder Gläubige Witwen hat, der versorge sie und lasse die Gemeinde nicht beschwert werden, auf daß die, so rechte Witwen sind, mögen genug haben.

If any faithful man or woman has widows, let them maintain them and let not the congregation be charged, that it may relieve those that are widows indeed.

17 D ie Ältesten, die wohl vorstehen, die halte man zweifacher Ehre wert, sonderlich die da arbeiten im Wort und in der Lehre.

¶ Let the elders that govern well be counted worthy of double honour, especially those who labour in the word and doctrine.

18 D enn es spricht die Schrift: "Du sollst dem Ochsen nicht das Maul verbinden, der da drischt;" und "Ein Arbeiter ist seines Lohnes wert."

For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treads out the grain. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.

19 W ider einen Ältesten nimm keine Klage an ohne zwei oder drei Zeugen.

Against an elder do not receive an accusation, unless there are two or three witnesses.

20 D ie da sündigen, die strafe vor allen, auf daß sich auch die andern fürchten.

Those that persist in sin rebuke before all, that the others may also fear.

21 I ch bezeuge vor Gott und dem HERRN Jesus Christus und den auserwählten Engeln, daß du solches haltest ohne eigenes Gutdünken und nichts tust nach Gunst.

I charge thee before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels, that thou observe these things without preferring one before another, doing nothing by partiality.

22 D ie Hände lege niemand zu bald auf, mache dich auch nicht teilhaftig fremder Sünden. Halte dich selber keusch.

Lay hands suddenly on no one, neither be partaker of the sins of others; keep thyself pure.

23 T rinke nicht mehr Wasser, sondern auch ein wenig Wein um deines Magens willen und weil du oft krank bist.

Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.

24 E tlicher Menschen Sünden sind offenbar, daß man sie zuvor richten kann; bei etlichen aber werden sie hernach offenbar.

Some men’s sins are manifest beforehand, before they come unto judgment, but to others they follow after.

25 D esgleichen auch etlicher gute Werke sind zuvor offenbar, und die andern bleiben auch nicht verborgen.

Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand, and those that are otherwise cannot be hid.
