1 H iob antwortete und sprach:

¶ And Job answered and said,

2 W enn man doch meinen Unmut wöge und mein Leiden zugleich in die Waage legte!

Oh that my grief and calamity were justly weighed and laid equally in the balances!

3 D enn nun ist es schwerer als Sand am Meer; darum gehen meine Worte irre.

For it would be heavier than the sand of the sea; therefore, my words are swallowed up.

4 D enn die Pfeile des Allmächtigen stecken in mir: derselben Gift muß mein Geist trinken, und die Schrecknisse Gottes sind auf mich gerichtet.

For the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks of the poison; and terrors of God combat me.

5 D as Wild schreit nicht, wenn es Gras hat; der Ochse blökt nicht, wenn er sein Futter hat.

Does the wild ass bray when he has grass? Does the ox low over his fodder?

6 K ann man auch essen, was ungesalzen ist? Oder wer mag kosten das Weiße um den Dotter?

Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

7 W as meine Seele widerte anzurühren, das ist meine Speise, mir zum Ekel.

The things that my soul refused to touch before, now by my sorrow are my food.

8 O , daß meine Bitte geschähe und Gott gäbe mir, was ich hoffe!

¶ Oh, that I might have my request and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!

9 D aß Gott anfinge und zerschlüge mich und ließe seine Hand gehen und zerscheiterte mich!

Even that it would please God to destroy me, that he would let loose his hand and cut me off!

10 S o hätte ich nun Trost, und wollte bitten in meiner Krankheit, daß er nur nicht schonte, habe ich doch nicht verleugnet die Reden des Heiligen.

Then should my comfort grow; I would hold on to sorrow without mercy; for I have not contradicted the words of the Holy One.

11 W as ist meine Kraft, daß ich möge beharren? und welches ist mein Ende, daß meine Seele geduldig sein sollte?

What is my strength that I should hope? What is my end that I should prolong my life?

12 I st doch meine Kraft nicht steinern und mein Fleisch nicht ehern.

Is my strength the strength of stones? Or is my flesh of steel?

13 H abe ich doch nirgend Hilfe, und mein Vermögen ist dahin.

Am I not doing all that I can, and even with all this I lack the power to do anything?

14 W er Barmherzigkeit seinem Nächsten verweigert, der verläßt des Allmächtigen Furcht.

¶ He that is afflicted deserves mercy from his friend; but he has forsaken the fear of the Almighty.

15 M eine Brüder trügen wie ein Bach, wie Wasserströme, die vergehen,

My brethren have lied to me as a brook; they passed away as an impetuous stream,

16 d ie trübe sind vom Eis, in die der Schnee sich birgt:

which was hidden by ice and covered by snow.

17 z ur Zeit, wenn sie die Hitze drückt, versiegen sie; wenn es heiß wird, vergehen sie von ihrer Stätte.

Which in the time of heat, they vanish; when they are heated, they disappear out of their place;

18 D ie Reisezüge gehen ab vom Wege, sie treten aufs Ungebahnte und kommen um;

they turn aside out of the paths of their way; they go to nothing and perish.

19 d ie Reisezüge von Thema blicken ihnen nach, die Karawanen von Saba hofften auf sie:

The travelers of Tema looked; the traveling companies of Sheba waited for them.

20 a ber sie wurden zu Schanden über ihrer Hoffnung und mußten sich schämen, als sie dahin kamen.

They were put to shame because of their hope; they came there and found them confused.

21 S o seid ihr jetzt ein Nichts geworden, und weil ihr Jammer sehet, fürchtet ihr euch.

Now ye are certainly as they; ye have seen the torment and are afraid.

22 H abe ich auch gesagt: Bringet her von eurem Vermögen und schenkt mir

¶ Did I say, Bring unto me and pay for me out of your substance

23 u nd errettet mich aus der Hand des Feindes und erlöst mich von der Hand der Gewalttätigen?

and deliver me from the enemy’s hand and ransom me from the hand of the mighty?

24 L ehret mich, so will ich schweigen; und was ich nicht weiß, darin unterweist mich.

Teach me, and I will be silent; and cause me to understand in what I have erred.

25 W arum tadelt ihr rechte Rede? Wer ist unter euch, der sie strafen könnte?

How forcible are the words of rectitude! But what does your argument reprove?

26 G edenket ihr, Worte zu strafen? Aber eines Verzweifelten Rede ist für den Wind.

Are ye not thinking up words of reproof and throw to the wind words that are lost?

27 I hr fielet wohl über einen armen Waisen her und grübet eurem Nachbarn Gruben.

Ye also overwhelm the fatherless and dig a pit before your friend.

28 D och weil ihr habt angehoben, sehet auf mich, ob ich vor euch mit Lügen bestehen werde.

Now, therefore, if ye desire, look upon me and see if I shall lie in your presence.

29 A ntwortet, was recht ist; meine Antwort wird noch recht bleiben.

Turn now, and there is no iniquity; return again to look for my righteousness in this.

30 I st denn auf meiner Zunge Unrecht, oder sollte mein Gaumen Böses nicht merken?

If there is iniquity in my tongue or if my taste cannot discern the torments.
