1 ¶ And Job answered and said,

Hiob antwortete und sprach:

2 O h that my grief and calamity were justly weighed and laid equally in the balances!

Wenn man doch meinen Unmut wöge und mein Leiden zugleich in die Waage legte!

3 F or it would be heavier than the sand of the sea; therefore, my words are swallowed up.

Denn nun ist es schwerer als Sand am Meer; darum gehen meine Worte irre.

4 F or the arrows of the Almighty are within me; my spirit drinks of the poison; and terrors of God combat me.

Denn die Pfeile des Allmächtigen stecken in mir: derselben Gift muß mein Geist trinken, und die Schrecknisse Gottes sind auf mich gerichtet.

5 D oes the wild ass bray when he has grass? Does the ox low over his fodder?

Das Wild schreit nicht, wenn es Gras hat; der Ochse blökt nicht, wenn er sein Futter hat.

6 C an that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? Or is there any taste in the white of an egg?

Kann man auch essen, was ungesalzen ist? Oder wer mag kosten das Weiße um den Dotter?

7 T he things that my soul refused to touch before, now by my sorrow are my food.

Was meine Seele widerte anzurühren, das ist meine Speise, mir zum Ekel.

8 ¶ Oh, that I might have my request and that God would grant me the thing that I long for!

O, daß meine Bitte geschähe und Gott gäbe mir, was ich hoffe!

9 E ven that it would please God to destroy me, that he would let loose his hand and cut me off!

Daß Gott anfinge und zerschlüge mich und ließe seine Hand gehen und zerscheiterte mich!

10 T hen should my comfort grow; I would hold on to sorrow without mercy; for I have not contradicted the words of the Holy One.

So hätte ich nun Trost, und wollte bitten in meiner Krankheit, daß er nur nicht schonte, habe ich doch nicht verleugnet die Reden des Heiligen.

11 W hat is my strength that I should hope? What is my end that I should prolong my life?

Was ist meine Kraft, daß ich möge beharren? und welches ist mein Ende, daß meine Seele geduldig sein sollte?

12 I s my strength the strength of stones? Or is my flesh of steel?

Ist doch meine Kraft nicht steinern und mein Fleisch nicht ehern.

13 A m I not doing all that I can, and even with all this I lack the power to do anything?

Habe ich doch nirgend Hilfe, und mein Vermögen ist dahin.

14 ¶ He that is afflicted deserves mercy from his friend; but he has forsaken the fear of the Almighty.

Wer Barmherzigkeit seinem Nächsten verweigert, der verläßt des Allmächtigen Furcht.

15 M y brethren have lied to me as a brook; they passed away as an impetuous stream,

Meine Brüder trügen wie ein Bach, wie Wasserströme, die vergehen,

16 w hich was hidden by ice and covered by snow.

die trübe sind vom Eis, in die der Schnee sich birgt:

17 W hich in the time of heat, they vanish; when they are heated, they disappear out of their place;

zur Zeit, wenn sie die Hitze drückt, versiegen sie; wenn es heiß wird, vergehen sie von ihrer Stätte.

18 t hey turn aside out of the paths of their way; they go to nothing and perish.

Die Reisezüge gehen ab vom Wege, sie treten aufs Ungebahnte und kommen um;

19 T he travelers of Tema looked; the traveling companies of Sheba waited for them.

die Reisezüge von Thema blicken ihnen nach, die Karawanen von Saba hofften auf sie:

20 T hey were put to shame because of their hope; they came there and found them confused.

aber sie wurden zu Schanden über ihrer Hoffnung und mußten sich schämen, als sie dahin kamen.

21 N ow ye are certainly as they; ye have seen the torment and are afraid.

So seid ihr jetzt ein Nichts geworden, und weil ihr Jammer sehet, fürchtet ihr euch.

22 ¶ Did I say, Bring unto me and pay for me out of your substance

Habe ich auch gesagt: Bringet her von eurem Vermögen und schenkt mir

23 a nd deliver me from the enemy’s hand and ransom me from the hand of the mighty?

und errettet mich aus der Hand des Feindes und erlöst mich von der Hand der Gewalttätigen?

24 T each me, and I will be silent; and cause me to understand in what I have erred.

Lehret mich, so will ich schweigen; und was ich nicht weiß, darin unterweist mich.

25 H ow forcible are the words of rectitude! But what does your argument reprove?

Warum tadelt ihr rechte Rede? Wer ist unter euch, der sie strafen könnte?

26 A re ye not thinking up words of reproof and throw to the wind words that are lost?

Gedenket ihr, Worte zu strafen? Aber eines Verzweifelten Rede ist für den Wind.

27 Y e also overwhelm the fatherless and dig a pit before your friend.

Ihr fielet wohl über einen armen Waisen her und grübet eurem Nachbarn Gruben.

28 N ow, therefore, if ye desire, look upon me and see if I shall lie in your presence.

Doch weil ihr habt angehoben, sehet auf mich, ob ich vor euch mit Lügen bestehen werde.

29 T urn now, and there is no iniquity; return again to look for my righteousness in this.

Antwortet, was recht ist; meine Antwort wird noch recht bleiben.

30 I f there is iniquity in my tongue or if my taste cannot discern the torments.

Ist denn auf meiner Zunge Unrecht, oder sollte mein Gaumen Böses nicht merken?
