1 ¶ Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being governor of Judaea, and Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of Ituraea and of the region of Trachonitis, and Lysanias the tetrarch of Abilene,

In dem fünfzehnten Jahr des Kaisertums Kaisers Tiberius, da Pontius Pilatus Landpfleger in Judäa war und Herodes ein Vierfürst in Galiläa und sein Bruder Philippus ein Vierfürst in Ituräa und in der Gegend Trachonitis und Lysanias ein Vierfürst zu Abilene,

2 A nnas and Caiaphas being the high priests, the word of God came upon John the son of Zachariah in the wilderness.

da Hannas und Kaiphas Hohepriester waren: da geschah der Befehl Gottes zu Johannes, des Zacharias Sohn, in der Wüste.

3 A nd he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;

Und er kam in alle Gegend um den Jordan und predigte die Taufe der Buße zur Vergebung Sünden,

4 a s it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.

wie geschrieben steht in dem Buch der Reden Jesaja's, des Propheten, der da sagt: "Es ist eine Stimme eines Predigers in der Wüste: Bereitet den Weg des HERRN und macht seine Steige richtig!

5 E very valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low, and the crooked ways shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;

Alle Täler sollen voll werden, und alle Berge und Hügel erniedrigt werden; und was krumm ist, soll richtig werden, und was uneben ist, soll schlichter Weg werden.

6 a nd all flesh shall see the saving health of God.

Und alles Fleisch wird den Heiland Gottes sehen."

7 T hen said he to the multitude that came forth to be baptized of him, O generation of vipers, who taught you to flee from the wrath to come?

Da sprach er zu dem Volk, das hinausging, daß sich von ihm Taufen ließe: Ihr Otterngezüchte, wer hat denn euch gewiesen, daß ihr dem zukünftigen Zorn entrinnen werdet?

8 B ring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance and begin not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father; for I say unto you, That God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

Sehet zu, tut rechtschaffene Früchte der Buße und nehmt euch nicht vor, zu sagen: Wir haben Abraham zum Vater. Denn ich sage euch: Gott kann dem Abraham aus diesen Steinen Kinder erwecken.

9 A nd now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees; every tree therefore which does not bring forth good fruit is hewn down and cast into the fire.

Es ist schon die Axt den Bäumen an die Wurzel gelegt; welcher Baum nicht gute Frucht bringt, wird abgehauen und in das Feuer geworfen.

10 A nd the people asked him, saying, What shall we do then?

Und das Volk fragte ihn und sprach: Was sollen wir denn tun?

11 H e answered and said unto them, He that has two coats, let him impart to him that has none; and he that has food, let him do likewise.

Er antwortete aber und sprach zu ihnen: Wer zwei Röcke hat, der gebe dem, der keinen hat; und wer Speise hat, der tue auch also.

12 T hen the publicans also came to be baptized and said unto him, Master, what shall we do?

Es kamen auch die Zöllner, daß sie sich taufen ließen, und sprachen zu ihm: Meister, was sollen denn wir tun?

13 A nd he said unto them, Exact no more than that which is appointed you.

Er sprach zu ihnen: Fordert nicht mehr, denn gesetzt ist.

14 A nd the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Oppress no one, neither accuse anyone falsely; and be content with your wages.

Da fragten ihn auch die Kriegsleute und sprachen: Was sollen denn wir tun? Und er sprach zu ihnen: Tut niemand Gewalt noch Unrecht und laßt euch genügen an eurem Solde.

15 ¶ And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ, or not,

Als aber das Volk im Wahn war und dachten in ihren Herzen von Johannes, ob er vielleicht Christus wäre,

16 J ohn answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you in water, but one mightier than I comes, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose; he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire;

antwortete Johannes und sprach zu allen: Ich taufe euch mit Wasser; es kommt aber ein Stärkerer nach mir, dem ich nicht genugsam bin, daß ich die Riemen seiner Schuhe auflöse; der wird euch mit dem heiligen Geist und mit Feuer taufen.

17 w hose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly purge his threshing floor and will gather the wheat into his storehouse, but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable.

In seiner Hand ist die Wurfschaufel, und er wird seine Tenne fegen und wird den Weizen in seine Scheuer sammeln, und die Spreu wird er mit dem ewigen Feuer verbrennen.

18 A nd exhorting many other things he announced the gospel unto the people.

Und viel anderes mehr ermahnte er das Volk und verkündigte ihnen das Heil.

19 T hen Herod the tetrarch, being reproved by him for Herodias his brother Philip’s wife and for all the evils which Herod had done,

Herodes aber, der Vierfürst, da er von ihm gestraft ward um der Herodias willen, seines Bruders Weib, und um alles Übels willen, das Herodes tat,

20 a dded yet this above all, that he shut up John in prison.

legte er über das alles Johannes gefangen.

21 ¶ Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass that, Jesus also being baptized and praying, the heaven was opened,

Und es begab sich, da sich alles Volk taufen ließ und Jesus auch getauft war und betete, daß sich der Himmel auftat

22 a nd the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee is my delight.

und der heilige Geist fuhr hernieder in leiblicher Gestalt auf ihn wie eine Taube und eine Stimme kam aus dem Himmel, die sprach: Du bist mein lieber Sohn, an dem ich Wohlgefallen habe.

23 A nd Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed) the son of Joseph, who was the son of Heli,

Und Jesus war, da er anfing, ungefähr dreißig Jahre alt, und ward gehalten für einen Sohn Josephs, welcher war ein Sohn Eli's,
