1 ¶ Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

Es lag aber einer krank mit Namen Lazarus, von Bethanien, in dem Flecken Marias und ihrer Schwester Martha.

2 ( It was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair whose brother Lazarus was sick.)

(Maria aber war, die den HERRN gesalbt hat mit Salbe und seine Füße getrocknet mit ihrem Haar; deren Bruder, Lazarus, war krank.)

3 T herefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

Da sandten seine Schwestern zu ihm und ließen ihm sagen: HERR, siehe, den du liebhast, der liegt krank.

4 W hen Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby.

Da Jesus das hörte, sprach er: Die Krankheit ist nicht zum Tode, sondern zur Ehre Gottes, daß der Sohn Gottes dadurch geehrt werde.

5 N ow Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

Jesus aber hatte Martha lieb und ihre Schwester und Lazarus.

6 W hen he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was.

Als er nun hörte, daß er krank war, blieb er zwei Tage an dem Ort, da er war.

7 T hen after that he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judea again.

Darnach spricht er zu seinen Jüngern: Laßt uns wieder nach Judäa ziehen!

8 H is disciples said unto him, Rabbi, the Jews of late sought to stone thee, and goest thou there again?

Seine Jünger sprachen zu ihm: Meister, jenes Mal wollten die Juden dich steinigen, und du willst wieder dahin ziehen?

9 J esus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble because he sees the light of this world.

Jesus antwortete: Sind nicht des Tages zwölf Stunden? Wer des Tages wandelt, der stößt sich nicht; denn er sieht das Licht dieser Welt.

10 B ut he who walks in the night stumbles because there is no light in him.

Wer aber des Nachts wandelt, der stößt sich; denn es ist kein Licht in ihm.

11 H aving said that he said unto them, Our friend Lazarus sleeps, but I go that I may awake him out of sleep.

Solches sagte er, und darnach spricht er zu ihnen: Lazarus, unser Freund, schläft; aber ich gehe hin, daß ich ihn auferwecke.

12 T hen his disciples said, Lord, if he sleeps, he shall be saved.

Da sprachen seine Jünger: HERR, schläft er, so wird's besser mit ihm.

13 B ut Jesus had spoken of his death, and they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep.

Jesus aber sagte von seinem Tode; sie meinten aber, er redete vom leiblichen Schlaf.

14 T hen Jesus said unto them plainly, Lazarus has died.

Da sagte es ihnen Jesus frei heraus: Lazarus ist gestorben;

15 A nd I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, in order that ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.

und ich bin froh um euretwillen, daß ich nicht dagewesen bin, auf daß ihr glaubt. Aber laßt uns zu ihm ziehen!

16 T hen Thomas said, who is called Didymus, unto his fellowdisciples, Let us go also, that we may die with him.

Da sprach Thomas, der genannt ist Zwilling, zu den Jüngern: Laßt uns mitziehen, daß wir mit ihm sterben!

17 ¶ Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already.

Da kam Jesus und fand ihn, daß er schon vier Tage im Grabe gelegen hatte.

18 N ow Bethany was near unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off;

Bethanien aber war nahe bei Jerusalem, bei fünfzehn Feld Weges;

19 a nd many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them concerning their brother.

und viele Juden waren zu Martha und Maria gekommen, sie zu trösten über ihren Bruder.

20 T hen Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him; but Mary sat still in the house.

Als Martha nun hörte, daß Jesus kommt, geht sie ihm entgegen; Maria aber blieb daheim sitzen.

21 T hen Martha said unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died.

Da sprach Martha zu Jesus: HERR, wärest du hier gewesen, mein Bruder wäre nicht gestorben!

22 B ut I know that even now whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it unto thee.

Aber ich weiß auch noch, daß, was du bittest von Gott, das wird dir Gott geben.

23 J esus said unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.

Jesus spricht zu ihr: Dein Bruder soll auferstehen.

24 M artha said unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection in the last day.

Martha spricht zu ihm: Ich weiß wohl, daß er auferstehen wird in der Auferstehung am Jüngsten Tage.

25 J esus said unto her, I AM the resurrection and the life; he that believes in me, though he is dead, yet shall he live;

Jesus spricht zu ihr: Ich bin die Auferstehung und das Leben. Wer an mich glaubt, der wird leben, ob er gleich stürbe;

26 a nd whosoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Believest thou this?

und wer da lebet und glaubet an mich, der wird nimmermehr sterben. Glaubst du das?

27 S he said unto him, Yes, Lord, I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, who should come into the world.

Sie spricht zu ihm: HERR, ja, ich glaube, daß du bist Christus, der Sohn Gottes, der in die Welt gekommen ist.

28 A nd having said this, she went away and called Mary her sister secretly, saying, The Master is come, and calls for thee.

Und da sie das gesagt hatte, ging sie hin und rief ihre Schwester Maria heimlich und sprach: Der Meister ist da und ruft dich.

29 A s soon as she heard that, she arose quickly and came unto him.

Dieselbe, als sie das hörte, stand sie eilend auf und kam zu ihm.

30 ( Now Jesus was not yet come into the town, but was in that place where Martha met him.)

(Denn Jesus war noch nicht in den Flecken gekommen, sondern war noch an dem Ort, da ihm Martha war entgegengekommen.)

31 T hen the Jews who were with her in the house and comforted her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up hastily and went out, followed her, saying, She goes unto the grave to weep there.

Die Juden, die bei ihr im Haus waren und sie trösteten, da sie sahen Maria, daß sie eilend aufstand und hinausging, folgten sie ihr nach und sprachen: Sie geht hin zum Grabe, daß sie daselbst weine.

32 T hen when Mary was come where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother would not have died.

Als nun Maria kam, da Jesus war, und sah ihn, fiel sie zu seinen Füßen und sprach zu ihm: HERR, wärest du hier gewesen, mein Bruder wäre nicht gestorben!

33 ¶ When Jesus therefore saw her weeping and the Jews also weeping who came with her, he became enraged in the Spirit and stirred himself up

Als Jesus sie sah weinen und die Juden auch weinen, die mit ihr kamen, ergrimmte er im Geist und betrübte sich selbst

34 a nd said, Where have ye laid him? They said unto him, Lord, come and see.

und sprach: Wo habt ihr ihn hingelegt? Sie sprachen zu ihm: HERR, komm und sieh es!

35 J esus wept.

Und Jesus gingen die Augen über.

36 T hen the Jews said, Behold how he loved him!

Da sprachen die Juden: Siehe, wie hat er ihn so liebgehabt!

37 A nd some of them said, Could not this man, who opened the eyes of the blind, have also caused that this man should not have died?

Etliche aber unter ihnen sprachen: Konnte, der den Blinden die Augen aufgetan hat, nicht verschaffen, daß auch dieser nicht stürbe?

38 J esus therefore, becoming enraged again in himself, came to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it.

Da ergrimmte Jesus abermals in sich selbst und kam zum Grabe. Es war aber eine Kluft, und ein Stein daraufgelegt.

39 J esus said, Take ye away the stone. Martha, the sister of him that had died, said unto him, Lord, by this time he stinks, for he has been dead four days.

Jesus sprach: Hebt den Stein ab! Spricht zu ihm Martha, die Schwester des Verstorbenen: HERR, er stinkt schon; denn er ist vier Tage gelegen.

40 J esus said unto her, Did I not say unto thee that if thou wouldest believe thou shalt see the glory of God?

Jesus spricht zu ihr: Habe ich dir nicht gesagt, so du glauben würdest, du würdest die Herrlichkeit Gottes sehen?

41 T hen they took away the stone from the place where the dead was laid. And Jesus, lifting up his eyes, said, Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me.

Da hoben sie den Stein ab, da der Verstorbene lag. Jesus aber hob seine Augen empor und sprach: Vater, ich danke dir, daß du mich erhört hast.

42 A nd I knew that thou hearest me always, but because of the people who stand by I said it, that they may believe that thou hast sent me.

Doch ich weiß, daß du mich allezeit hörst; aber um des Volkes willen, das umhersteht, sage ich's, daß sie glauben, du habest mich gesandt.

43 A nd having said these things, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth.

Da er das gesagt hatte, rief er mit lauter Stimme: Lazarus, komm heraus!

44 T hen he that had been dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus said unto them, Loose him, and let him go.

Und der Verstorbene kam heraus, gebunden mit Grabtüchern an Füßen und Händen und sein Angesicht verhüllt mit dem Schweißtuch. Jesus spricht zu ihnen: Löset ihn auf und lasset ihn gehen!

45 ¶ Then many of the Jews who had come to Mary and had seen what Jesus did believed on him.

Viele nun der Juden, die zu Maria gekommen waren und sahen, was Jesus tat, glaubten an ihn.

46 B ut some of them went unto the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.

Etliche aber von ihnen gingen hin zu den Pharisäern und sagten ihnen, was Jesus getan hatte.

47 T hen the high priests and the Pharisees gathered a council and said, What shall we do? for this man does many signs.

Da versammelten die Hohenpriester und die Pharisäer einen Rat und sprachen: Was tun wir? Dieser Mensch tut viele Zeichen.

48 I f we let him thus alone, everyone will believe on him, and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and the nation.

Lassen wir ihn also, so werden sie alle an ihn glauben; so kommen dann die Römer und nehmen uns Land und Leute.

49 A nd one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all

Einer aber unter ihnen, Kaiphas, der desselben Jahres Hoherpriester war, sprach zu ihnen: Ihr wisset nichts,

50 n or consider that it is expedient for us that one man should die for the people, and not that the whole nation be lost.

bedenket auch nichts; es ist uns besser ein Mensch sterbe für das Volk, denn daß das ganze Volk verderbe.

51 A nd this he spoke not of himself; but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for the nation;

(Solches aber redete er nicht von sich selbst, sondern weil er desselben Jahres Hoherpriester war, weissagte er. Denn Jesus sollte sterben für das Volk;

52 a nd not for that nation only, but that he should also gather together in one the sons of God that were scattered abroad.

und nicht für das Volk allein, sondern daß er auch die Kinder Gottes, die zerstreut waren, zusammenbrächte.)

53 S o that from that day forth they took counsel together to kill him.

Von dem Tage an ratschlagten sie, wie sie ihn töteten.

54 J esus therefore no longer walked openly among the Jews, but went from there unto a country near to the wilderness into a city called Ephraim and there continued with his disciples.

Jesus aber wandelte nicht mehr frei unter den Juden, sondern ging von dannen in eine Gegend nahe bei der Wüste, in eine Stadt, genannt Ephrem, und hatte sein Wesen daselbst mit seinen Jüngern.

55 A nd the passover of the Jews was now at hand, and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover to purify themselves;

Es war aber nahe das Ostern der Juden; und es gingen viele aus der Gegend hinauf gen Jerusalem vor Ostern, daß sie sich reinigten.

56 a nd they sought for Jesus and spoke among themselves as they stood in the temple, What think ye, that he will not come to the feast?

Da standen sie und fragten nach Jesus und redeten miteinander im Tempel: Was dünkt euch, daß er nicht kommt auf das Fest?

57 N ow both the high priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that if anyone knew where he was he should show it, that they might take him.

Es hatten aber die Hohenpriester und Pharisäer lassen ein Gebot ausgehen: so jemand wüßte, wo er wäre, daß er's anzeige, daß sie ihn griffen.
