1 ¶ Oh that thou would rend the heavens, that thou would come down, that the mountains might flow down at thy presence,

Ach daß du den Himmel zerrissest und führest herab, daß die Berge vor dir zerflössen, wie ein heißes Wasser vom heftigen Feuer versiedet,

2 a s when the melting fire burns, the fire causes the waters to boil, to make thy name known to thine adversaries, that the Gentiles may tremble at thy presence!

(64-1b) daß dein Name kund würde unter deinen Feinden und die Heiden vor dir zittern müßten,

3 A s thou didst come down when thou didst terrible things which we did not look for, that the mountains flowed down at thy presence.

durch die Wunder, die du tust, deren man sich nicht versieht, daß du herabführest und die Berge vor dir zerflössen!

4 N or have men heard, nor perceived by the ear, neither has the eye seen a God beside thee, that thou might do it again for the one who waits in him.

Wie denn von der Welt her nicht vernommen ist noch mit Ohren gehört, auch kein Auge gesehen hat einen Gott außer dir, der so wohltut denen, die auf ihn harren.

5 T hou didst come out to meet him that with rejoicing had worked righteous ness. In thy ways they remembered thee. Behold, thou art wroth; for we have sinned: thy ways are eternal, and we shall be saved.

Du begegnest dem Fröhlichen und denen, so Gerechtigkeit übten und auf deinen Wegen dein gedachten. Siehe, du zürntest wohl, da wir sündigten und lange darin blieben; uns ward aber dennoch geholfen.

6 ¶ But we were all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses as filthy rags; and we all fell as the leaves of a tree; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Aber nun sind wir allesamt wie die Unreinen, und alle unsre Gerechtigkeit ist wie ein unflätig Kleid. Wir sind alle verwelkt wie die Blätter, und unsre Sünden führen uns dahin wie Wind.

7 A nd there is none that calls upon thy name, that wakes himself up to take hold of thee; therefore, thou hast hid thy face from us and hast allowed us to wither in the power of our iniquities.

Niemand ruft deinen Namen an oder macht sich auf, daß er sich an dich halte; denn du verbirgst dein Angesicht vor uns und lässest uns in unsern Sünden verschmachten.

8 B ut now, O LORD, thou art our father; we are the clay, and thou our potter; such that we all are the work of thy hands.

Aber nun, HERR, du bist unser Vater; wir sind der Ton, du bist der Töpfer; und wir alle sind deiner Hände Werk.

9 B e not wroth very sore, O LORD, neither remember iniquity for ever; behold, see, we beseech thee, we are all thy people.

HERR, zürne nicht zu sehr und denke nicht ewig der Sünde. Siehe doch das an, daß wir alle dein Volk sind.

10 T hy holy cities are a wilderness, Zion is a wilderness, Jerusalem a desolation.

Die Städte deines Heiligtums sind zur Wüste geworden; Zion ist zur Wüste geworden, Jerusalem liegt zerstört.

11 O ur house of our Sanctuary and of our glory, where our fathers praised thee, was burned up with fire; and all our precious things were destroyed.

Das Haus unsrer Heiligkeit und Herrlichkeit, darin dich unsre Väter gelobt haben, ist mit Feuer verbrannt; und alles, was wir Schönes hatten, ist zu Schanden gemacht.

12 W ilt thou refrain thyself regarding these things, O LORD? Wilt thou hold thy peace and afflict us very sore?

HERR, willst du so hart sein zu solchem und schweigen und uns so sehr niederschlagen?
