1 U nd es hob an Elihu und sprach:

¶ Elihu proceeded in his reasoning and said,

2 A chtest du das für Recht, daß du sprichst: "Ich bin gerechter denn Gott"?

Dost thou think this to be right, when thou didst say, I am more righteous than God?

3 D enn du sprichst: "Wer gilt bei dir etwas? Was hilft es, ob ich nicht sündige?"

For thou didst say, What advantage will it be unto thee? And, What profit shall I have, if I am cleansed from my sin?

4 I ch will dir antworten ein Wort und deinen Freunden mit dir.

I will answer thee and thy companions with thee.

5 S chaue gen Himmel und siehe; und schau an die Wolken, daß sie dir zu hoch sind.

Look unto the heavens and see; and behold the heavens which are higher than thou.

6 S ündigst du, was kannst du ihm Schaden? Und ob deiner Missetaten viel ist, was kannst du ihm tun?

If thou dost sin, what hast thou done against him? Or if thy rebellion is multiplied, what doest thou unto him?

7 U nd ob du gerecht seist, was kannst du ihm geben, oder was wird er von deinen Händen nehmen?

If thou art righteous, what shalt thou give him? Or what shall he receive of thine hand?

8 E inem Menschen, wie du bist, mag wohl etwas tun deine Bosheit, und einem Menschenkind deine Gerechtigkeit.

Thy wickedness shall hurt a man as thou art; and thy righteousness shall profit the son of man.

9 M an schreit, daß viel Gewalt geschieht, und ruft über den Arm der Großen;

¶ By reason of the great violence they shall call out; they cry out because of the strength of the many.

10 a ber man fragt nicht: "Wo ist Gott, mein Schöpfer, der Lobgesänge gibt in der Nacht,

But no one shall say, Where is God my maker, who gives songs in the night;

11 d er uns klüger macht denn das Vieh auf Erden und weiser denn die Vögel unter dem Himmel?"

who teaches us more than the beasts of the earth and makes us wiser than the fowls of heaven?

12 D a schreien sie über den Hochmut der Bösen, und er wird sie nicht erhören.

There they shall cry, but he shall give no answer because of the pride of those that are evil.

13 D enn Gott wird das Eitle nicht erhören, und der Allmächtige wird es nicht ansehen.

Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty look upon it.

14 N un sprichst du gar, du wirst ihn nicht sehen. Aber es ist ein Gericht vor ihm, harre sein nur!

¶ For much that thou dost say, he will not look upon it, submit to judgment before him, and trust thou in him.

15 o b auch sein Zorn so bald nicht heimsucht und er sich's nicht annimmt, daß so viel Laster da sind.

But now, because he has not visited in wrath; nor is it known in great extremity;

16 D arum hat Hiob seinen Mund umsonst aufgesperrt und gibt stolzes Gerede vor mit Unverstand.

therefore, Job opened his mouth in vain and multiplied words without knowledge.
