1 „ Păzeşte-ţi piciorul când intri în Casa lui Dumnezeu şi apropie-te mai bine să asculţi, decât să aduci jertfa nesăbuiţilor, căci ei nu ştiu că săvârşesc un rău.

¶ Watch thy feet when thou goest to the house of God and draw near with more willingness to hear than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know how to do what God wants.

2 N u te grăbi să-ţi deschizi gura şi inima ta să nu se pripească să rostească ceva înaintea lui Dumnezeu, căci Dumnezeu este în ceruri, iar tu eşti pe pământ; de aceea cuvintele tale să fie cumpănite.

Do not be rash with thy mouth and do not let thy heart be hasty to utter any thing before God, for God is in heaven and thou upon earth; therefore let thy words be few.

3 C ăci aşa cum visele se nasc din mulţimea grijilor, tot aşa prostia nesăbuitului se cunoaşte din mulţimea cuvintelor.

For out of much preoccupation comes the dream, and the voice of the fool out of a multitude of words.

4 C ând faci un jurământ înaintea lui Dumnezeu, nu întârzia să-l împlineşti, căci Lui nu-I plac nesăbuiţii. Aşadar, împlineşte-ţi jurământul!

¶ When thou dost vow a vow unto God, do not defer to pay it; for he has no pleasure in fools; pay that which thou hast vowed.

5 E ste mai bine să nu faci jurăminte, decât să faci jurăminte şi să nu le împlineşti.

It is better that thou should not vow than that thou should vow and not pay.

6 N u lăsa gura să-ţi ducă trupul în păcat, aşa încât să-i zici trimisului lui Dumnezeu: «A fost o greşeală!» De ce să se mânie Dumnezeu din pricina glasului tău şi să nimicească lucrarea mâinilor tale?

Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was ignorance. Why should thou cause God to be angry because of thy voice and destroy the work of thine hands?

7 V isele multe sunt deşarte, la fel cum şi cuvintele multe sunt nefolositoare. Aşadar, teme-te de Dumnezeu!“ Deşertăciunea bogăţiei

Because dreams abound, and vanities and the words are many, but fear thou God.

8 „ Când vezi că într-o provincie săracul este asuprit, iar dreptatea şi omul drept sunt persecutaţi, să nu te miri de lucrurile acestea, căci un dregător veghează peste un alt dregător, iar peste amândoi veghează alţii şi mai mari!

If thou seest violence unto the poor and the extortion of rights and justice in a province, do not marvel at the matter, for height is looking upon height; and there is one higher than they.

9 C u toţii au parte de resursele ţării, iar menirea unui rege este de a apăra ogoarele.

¶ And there is higher authority in all of the things of the earth, but he who serves the field is king.

10 C el ce iubeşte argintul nu se satură de el, iar cine iubeşte bogăţia nu are câştig. Aceasta este tot o deşertăciune!

He that loves money shall not be satisfied with money; nor he that loves abundance with increase; this is also vanity.

11 C ând se înmulţesc bunătăţile, se înmulţesc şi cei ce le mănâncă şi ce câştig mai are proprietarul lor, decât doar că le vede cu ochii lui?

When goods increase, those that eat them are increased; and what good is there to the owners thereof, except the beholding of them with their eyes?

12 D ulce este somnul pentru cel ce a muncit, fie că a mâncat puţin, fie că a mâncat mult, însă bogatului, îndestularea nu-i oferă liniştea pentru odihnă.

The sleep of the servant is sweet whether he eats little or much, but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.

13 E xistă un rău tulburător pe care l-am văzut sub soare: am văzut bogăţie strânsă pentru proprietarul ei, dar înspre răul său,

There is another sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt;

14 b ogăţie pierdută printr-un negoţ nereuşit; astfel fiul care i s-a născut nu mai rămâne cu nimic.

which are lost by evil pursuits and to the sons which he has begotten; there is nothing left in his hand.

15 G ol a ieşit din pântecele mamei sale şi tot astfel s-a şi întors, plecând precum a venit. Nimic nu a luat din osteneala lui, din tot ce-i aparţinuse!

As he came forth of his mother’s womb, naked shall he return to go as he came and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand.

16 Ş i următorul lucru este un mare rău: întocmai cum vine omul, aşa şi pleacă, şi ce câştig are omul din aceasta?! S-a ostenit în zadar!

And this also is a sore evil; that in all points as he came, so shall he go; and what profit has he that has laboured for the wind?

17 T oată viaţa lui a mâncat pe întuneric, cu multă tulburare, cu suferinţă şi cu mânie.

In addition to this, all the days of his life he shall eat in darkness, with much wrath and pain and sorrow sickness.

18 I ată ce am înţeles eu că este bine şi frumos: ca omul să mănânce, să bea şi să trăiască bine de pe urma întregii lui osteneli pe care a depus-o sub soare în timpul puţinelor zile ale vieţii sale, pe care Dumnezeu i le-a dat, căci aceasta este partea sa.

¶ Behold therefore the good which I have seen: that good is to eat and to drink and to enjoy of the good of all his labour that he takes under the sun all the days of his life, which God gives him; for it is his portion.

19 D e asemenea, orice om, căruia Dumnezeu i-a dat bogăţie şi averi şi căruia i-a dat dreptul să se înfrupte din ele, să-şi ia partea ce i se cuvine din ele şi să se bucure de osteneala lui; acesta este un dar de la Dumnezeu.

Likewise, unto every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, he has also given him power to eat thereof and to take his portion and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.

20 C ăci el nu se gândeşte prea mult la cât de trecătoare îi este viaţa, fiindcă Dumnezeu îi umple inima de bucurie.“

To such a one, God will remove the concerns common to others, for God shall answer him with joy from his heart.
