1 D avid a venit la Nob, la preotul Ahimelek. Acesta i-a ieşit în întâmpinare tremurând şi l-a întrebat: – De ce eşti singur şi nu este nimeni cu tine?

¶ Then David came to Nob to Ahimelech, the priest, and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no one with thee?

2 D avid i-a răspuns preotului Ahimelek: – Regele mi-a încredinţat o misiune, spunându-mi: „Nimeni să nu ştie nimic despre misiunea în care te-am trimis şi pe care ţi-am încredinţat-o.“ Iar cu oamenii mei am hotărât un anume loc de întâlnire.

And David said unto Ahimelech, the priest, The king has commanded me a business and has said unto me, Let no one know anything of this business about which I send thee and what I have commanded thee, and I have appointed my servants to a certain place.

3 A cum însă ce ai la îndemână? Dă-mi vreo cinci pâini sau ce vei găsi.

Now, therefore, what is under thy hand? Give me five loaves of bread in my hand or what there is present.

4 D ar preotul i-a zis: – Nu am la îndemână pâine obişnuită. Pot doar să-ţi dau pâine sfinţită, însă numai dacă oamenii tăi s-au ferit de împreunarea cu femei.

And the priest answered David and said, There is no common bread under my hand; there is only sacred bread, which I will give thee if the young men have kept themselves at least from women.

5 D avid i-a răspuns preotului: – Cu adevărat, femeile au fost ţinute departe de noi de când am plecat. Trupurile tinerilor ar fi fost sfinte, chiar dacă ar fi fost o misiune obişnuită. Cu cât mai mult astăzi vor fi sfinte trupurile lor?

And David answered the priest and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us since yesterday and the day before yesterday since I came out, and the vessels of the young men were holy although the way is profane; how much more that today it shall be sanctified with the vessels.

6 A tunci preotul i-a dat pâine sfinţită pentru că nu se afla acolo alt fel de pâine decât pâinea prezentării, care fusese luată dinaintea Domnului şi înlocuită cu pâine caldă în ziua în care o luaseră pe cealaltă.

So the priest gave him the sacred bread, for there was no bread there but the showbread that had been taken from before the LORD to put hot bread in the day when it was taken away.

7 Î n acea zi se afla acolo, închis înaintea Domnului, unul dintre slujitorii lui Saul, edomitul Doeg, căpetenia păstorilor lui Saul.

Now a certain man of the slaves of Saul was there that day, fulfilling a vow before the LORD, and his name was Doeg, an Edomite, the principal of the pastors of Saul.

8 – Nu ai aici, la îndemână, o suliţă sau o sabie? l-a întrebat David pe Ahimelek. Eu nu mi-am luat cu mine sabia şi armele, pentru că porunca regelui era urgentă.

And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thy hand a spear or a sword? For I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me because the king’s business required haste.

9 P reotul i-a răspuns: – Sabia filisteanului Goliat, pe care l-ai ucis în valea Ela, se află aici. Este înfăşurată într-o învelitoare, în spatele efodului. Dacă vrei s-o iei, ia-o, căci nu este alta aici. – Nu este alta ca ea! Dă-mi-o! a zis David. Fuga lui David la Gat

And the priest replied, The sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom thou didst overcome in the valley of Elah, behold, it is here wrapped in a veil behind the ephod; if thou wilt take that, take it, for there is none other except that here. And David said, There is none like that; give it to me.

10 D avid a fugit de Saul în acea zi şi a venit la Achiş, regele Gatului.

¶ And David arose and fled that day from the presence of Saul and went to Achish, the king of Gath.

11 S lujitorii lui Achiş i-au zis acestuia: – Nu este acesta David, regele ţării, şi nu despre el cântau dansând şi spunând: „Saul a ucis miile lui, iar David zecile lui de mii?“

And the slaves of Achish said unto him, Is this not David, the king of the land? Did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying, Saul has slain his thousands and David his ten thousands?

12 D avid a pus la inimă aceste cuvinte şi i-a fost foarte frică de Achiş, regele Gatului.

And David laid up these words in his heart and was sore afraid of Achish, the king of Gath.

13 Ş i, sub privirea lor, el şi-a schimbat purtarea, făcând pe nebunul în mâinile lor: făcea semne pe uşile porţii şi lăsa să-i curgă saliva pe barbă.

And he changed his behaviour before them and feigned himself a fool in their hands and scrabbled on the doors of the gate and let his spittle fall down upon his beard.

14 A tunci Achiş le-a zis slujitorilor săi: – Vedeţi bine că omul este nebun. Pentru ce mi l-aţi adus?

Then Achish said unto his slaves, Behold, ye see the man is mad; why then have ye brought him to me?

15 O are duc eu lipsă de nebuni de l-aţi adus pe acesta să facă nebunii înaintea mea? Să intre oare acesta în casa mea?

Have I need of mad men that ye have brought this fellow to play the mad man in my presence? Shall this fellow come into my house?
