1 T hus the Lord God showed to me, and behold, a basket of summer fruit.

¶ Thus hath the Lord GOD showed unto me: and behold a basket of summer fruit.

2 A nd He said, Amos, what do you see? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the Lord to me, The end has come upon My people Israel; I will not pass by and spare them any more.

And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again pass over them any more.

3 A nd the songs of the temple shall become wailings in that day, says the Lord God. The dead bodies shall be many; in every place they shall be cast forth in silence.

And the cantors of the temple shall howl in that day, said the Lord GOD; there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.

4 H ear this, O you who would swallow up and trample down the needy, even to make the poor of the land to fail and come to an end,

¶ Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, and cut off the poor of the land,

5 S aying, When will the New Moon festival be past that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath that we may offer wheat for sale, making the ephah small and the shekel great and falsifying the scales by deceit,

saying, When the month is over, we will sell the wheat; and after the sabbath day we will open the storehouse of bread, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the balances by deceit;

6 T hat we may buy the poor for silver and the needy for a pair of sandals; yes, and sell the refuse of the wheat ?

that we may buy the poor for money and the needy for a pair of shoes and sell the refuse of the wheat.

7 T he Lord has sworn by the Glory and Pride of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their deeds.

The LORD has sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any of their works.

8 S hall not the land tremble on this account, and everyone mourn who dwells in it? Yes, it shall rise like the river, all of it, and it shall be tossed about and sink back again to normal level, as does the Nile of Egypt.

Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwells therein? and it shall all rise up as a flood, and it shall be cast out and sunk, as the river of Egypt.

9 A nd in that day, says the Lord God, I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will darken the earth in the broad daylight.

And it shall come to pass in that day, said the Lord GOD, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I will cover the earth with darkness in the clear day;

10 A nd I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation, and I will cause sackcloth to be put upon all loins and baldness shall come on every head; and I will make that time as the mourning for an only son, and the end of it as a bitter day.

11 B ehold, the days are coming, says the Lord God, when I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but for hearing the words of the Lord.

¶ Behold, the days come, said the Lord GOD, that I will send a famine to the earth, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD:

12 A nd shall wander from sea to sea and from the north even to the east; they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the Lord, but shall not find it.

13 I n that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint for thirst.

14 T hose who swear by Ashimah or the sin of Samaria and say, By the life of your god, O Dan! and, By the life of the way of Beersheba, they shall fall and rise no more.

Those that swear by the guiltiness of Samaria and say, As thy God of Dan lives; and, As the way of Beersheba lives, even they shall fall, and never rise up again.
