1 I n those days the Philistines gathered their forces for war against Israel. Achish said to David, Understand that you and your men shall go with me to battle.

¶ And it came to pass in those days, that the Philistines gathered their armies together for warfare, to fight against Israel. And Achish said unto David, Know for certain, that thou shalt go out with me to battle, thou and thy men.

2 D avid said to Achish, All right, you shall know what your servant can do. Achish said to David, Therefore I will make you my bodyguard always.

And David said to Achish, Surely thou shalt know what thy slave can do. And Achish said to David, Therefore, I will make thee keeper of my head all the days.

3 N ow Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in Ramah, his own city. And Saul had put the mediums and the wizards out of the land.

Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had lamented him, and buried him in Ramah in his own city. And Saul had removed the spiritists and the diviners out of the land.

4 A nd the Philistines assembled and came and encamped at Shunem; and Saul gathered all Israel and they encamped at Gilboa.

And the Philistines gathered themselves together and came and pitched camp in Shunem, and Saul gathered all Israel together, and they pitched camp in Gilboa.

5 W hen Saul saw the Philistine host, he was afraid; his heart trembled greatly.

And when Saul saw the host of the Philistines, he was afraid, and his heart trembled greatly.

6 W hen Saul inquired of the Lord, He refused to answer him, either by dreams or by Urim or by the prophets.

And Saul enquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams nor by Urim nor by prophets.

7 T hen Saul said to his servants, Find me a woman who is a medium, that I may go and inquire of her. His servants said, Behold, there is a woman who is a medium at Endor.

¶ Then Saul said unto his slaves, Seek me a woman that is a spiritist that I may go to her and enquire of her. And his slaves said to him, Behold, there is a woman that is a spiritist at Endor.

8 S o Saul disguised himself, put on other raiment, and he and two men with him went and came to the woman at night. He said to her, Perceive for me by the familiar spirit and bring up for me the dead person whom I shall name to you.

And Saul disguised himself and put on other clothing, and he went with two men, and they came to the woman by night; and he said, I pray thee, divine unto me by spiritism and bring me him up whom I shall name unto thee.

9 T he woman said, See here, you know what Saul has done, how he has cut off those who are mediums and wizards out of the land. Why then do you lay a trap for my life to cause my death?

And the woman said unto him, Behold, thou knowest what Saul has done, how he has cut off the spiritists and the diviners out of the land; why then dost thou lay a snare for my life, to cause me to die?

10 A nd Saul swore to her by the Lord, saying, As the Lord lives, there shall no punishment come to you for this.

And Saul swore to her by the LORD, saying, As the LORD lives, no iniquity shall come upon thee for this thing.

11 T he woman said, Whom shall I bring up for you? He said, Bring up Samuel for me.

Then the woman said, Whom shall I bring up unto thee? And he said, Bring me up Samuel.

12 A nd when the woman saw Samuel, she screamed and she said to Saul, Why have you deceived me? For you are Saul!

And when the woman saw Samuel, she cried with a loud voice; and the woman spoke to Saul, saying, Why hast thou deceived me? For thou art Saul.

13 T he king said to her, Be not afraid; what do you see? The woman said to Saul, I see a god coming up out of the earth!

And the king said unto her, Do not be afraid. What didst thou see? And the woman said unto Saul, I saw gods rising out of the land.

14 H e said to her, In what form is he? And she said, An old man comes up, covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground and made obeisance.

And he said unto her, What form is he of? And she said, An old man comes, and he is covered with a mantle. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with his face to the ground and worshipped.

15 A nd Samuel said to Saul, Why have you disturbed me to bring me up? Saul answered, I am bitterly distressed; for the Philistines make war against me, and God has departed from me and answers me no more, either by prophets or by dreams. Therefore I have called you, that you may make known to me what I should do.

¶ And Samuel said to Saul, Why hast thou disquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul answered, I am sore distressed, for the Philistines make war against me, and God is departed from me and no longer answers me neither by prophets nor by dreams; therefore, I have called thee that thou may make known unto me what I shall do.

16 S amuel said, Why then do you ask me, seeing that the Lord has turned from you and has become your enemy?

Then Samuel said, Why then dost thou ask of me, seeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thy enemy?

17 T he Lord has done to you as He said through me He would do; for has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to your neighbor David.

The LORD, therefore, has done as he spoke by me! For the LORD has rent the kingdom out of thy hand and given it to thy neighbour, even to David.

18 B ecause you did not obey the voice of the Lord or execute His fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore the Lord has done this thing to you this day.

Because thou didst not hearken unto the voice of the LORD nor execute his fierce wrath upon Amalek; therefore, the LORD has done this thing unto thee today.

19 M oreover, the Lord will also give Israel with you into the hands of the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons shall be with me. The Lord also will give the army of Israel into the hands of the Philistines.

And the LORD will also deliver Israel with thee into the hand of the Philistines, and tomorrow shalt thou and thy sons be with me; the LORD shall also deliver the camp of Israel into the hand of the Philistines.

20 T hen immediately Saul fell full length upon the earth floor, and was exceedingly afraid because of Samuel’s words. There was no strength in him, for he had eaten nothing all day and all night.

¶ Then Saul, as great as he was, fell suddenly to the earth and was sore afraid because of the words of Samuel; and there was no strength in him, for he had eaten no bread all that day nor all that night.

21 T he woman came to Saul, and seeing that he was greatly troubled, she said to him, Behold, your handmaid has obeyed you, and I have put my life in my hands and have listened to what you said to me.

And the woman came unto Saul and saw that he was sore troubled and said unto him, Behold, thy handmaid has heard thy voice, and I have put my soul in my hand and have hearkened unto thy words which thou didst speak unto me.

22 S o now, I pray you, listen also to the voice of your handmaid and let me set a morsel of food before you, and eat, so you may have strength when you go on your way.

Now, therefore, I pray thee, hearken thou also unto the voice of thy handmaid and let me set a morsel of bread before thee; and eat, that thou may have strength, and go on thy way.

23 B ut he said, I will not eat. But his servants, together with the woman, urged him, and he heeded their words. So he arose from the ground and sat upon the bed.

But he refused and said, I will not eat. But his slaves, together with the woman, compelled him, and he hearkened unto their voice. So he arose from the ground and sat upon a bed.

24 T he woman had a fat calf in the house; she hurried and killed it, and took flour, kneaded it, and baked unleavened bread.

And the woman had a fat calf in the house, and she hastened and killed it and took flour and kneaded it and baked unleavened bread with it.

25 T hen she brought it before Saul and his servants, and they ate. Then they rose up and went away that night.

And she brought it before Saul and before his slaves, and after they ate, they rose up and went away that night.
