1 A nd God said to Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there. And make there an altar to God Who appeared to you when you fled from the presence of Esau your brother.
¶ And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there and make there an altar unto God, who appeared unto thee when thou didst flee from the face of Esau, thy brother.
2 T hen Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and purify yourselves and change garments;
Then Jacob said unto his household and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you and be clean and change your garments:
3 T hen let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make there an altar to God Who answered me in the day of my distress and was with me wherever I went.
And let us arise and go up to Bethel and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and has been with me in the way which I have gone.
4 S o they gave to Jacob all the strange gods they had and their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob buried and hid them under the oak near Shechem.
So they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their power and all their earrings which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.
5 A nd they journeyed and a terror from God fell on the towns round about them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.
And they journeyed, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
6 S o Jacob came to Luz, that is, Bethel, which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people with him.
¶ And Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him.
7 T here he built an altar, and called the place El-bethel, for there God revealed Himself to him when he fled from the presence of his brother.
And there he built an altar and called the place Elbethel because there God had appeared unto him when he fled from the face of his brother.
8 B ut Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died and was buried below Bethel under an oak; and the name of it was called Allon-bacuth.
Then Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak, and the name of it was called Allonbachuth.
9 A nd God appeared to Jacob again when he came out of Padan-aram, and declared a blessing on him.
And God appeared unto Jacob again when he came out of Padanaram and blessed him.
10 A gain God said to him, Your name is Jacob; you shall not be called Jacob any longer, but Israel shall be your name. So He called him Israel.
And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob; thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name, and he called his name Israel.
11 A nd God said to him, I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall come from you and kings shall be born of your stock;
And God said unto him, I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply, a nation and a company of nations (Gentiles) shall come out of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
12 T he land which I gave Abraham and Isaac I will give to you, and to your descendants after you I will give the land.
and the land which I have given to Abraham and to Isaac, to thee will I give it and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.
13 T hen God ascended from him in the place where He talked with him.
And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.
14 A nd Jacob set up a pillar (monument) in the place where he talked with, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it and he poured oil on it.

15 A nd Jacob called the name of the place where God had talked with him Bethel.
And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.
16 A nd they journeyed from Bethel and had but a little way to go to Ephrath when Rachel suffered the pangs of childbirth and had hard labor.
¶ And they journeyed from Bethel, and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath when Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.
17 W hen she was in hard labor, the midwife said to her, Do not be afraid; you shall have this son also.
And it came to pass when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
18 A nd as her soul was departing, for she died, she called his name Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin.
And it came to pass as her soul was departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni, but his father called him Benjamin.
19 S o Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath, that is, Bethlehem.
Thus Rachel died and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.
20 A nd Jacob set a pillar (monument) on her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.
And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave unto this day.
21 T hen Israel journeyed on and spread his tent on the other side of the tower of Edar.
¶ And Israel journeyed and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.
22 W hen Israel dwelt there, Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine; and Israel heard about it. Now Jacob’s sons were twelve.
And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:
23 T he sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.
The sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun.
24 T he sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
25 T he sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maid: Dan and Naphtali.
And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid: Dan and Naphtali.
26 A nd the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob born to him in Padan-aram.
And the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Padanaram.
27 A nd Jacob came to Isaac his father at Mamre or Kiriath-arba, that is, Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.
And Jacob came unto Isaac, his father, unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.
28 N ow the days of Isaac were 180 years.
And the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years.
29 A nd Isaac’s spirit departed; he died and was gathered to his people, being an old man, satisfied and satiated with days; his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
And Isaac expired and died and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days, and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
