1 T hen God said to Jacob, “Arise, go up to Bethel and live there, and make an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”
¶ And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel and dwell there and make there an altar unto God, who appeared unto thee when thou didst flee from the face of Esau, thy brother.
2 S o Jacob said to his household and to all who were with him, “Put away the foreign gods which are among you, and purify yourselves and change your garments;
Then Jacob said unto his household and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you and be clean and change your garments:
3 a nd let us arise and go up to Bethel, and I will make an altar there to God, who answered me in the day of my distress and has been with me wherever I have gone.”
And let us arise and go up to Bethel and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and has been with me in the way which I have gone.
4 S o they gave to Jacob all the foreign gods which they had and the rings which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the oak which was near Shechem.
So they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their power and all their earrings which were in their ears, and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.
5 A s they journeyed, there was a great terror upon the cities which were around them, and they did not pursue the sons of Jacob.
And they journeyed, and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
6 S o Jacob came to Luz (that is, Bethel), which is in the land of Canaan, he and all the people who were with him.
¶ And Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel, he and all the people that were with him.
7 H e built an altar there, and called the place El-bethel, because there God had revealed Himself to him when he fled from his brother.
And there he built an altar and called the place Elbethel because there God had appeared unto him when he fled from the face of his brother.
8 N ow Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried below Bethel under the oak; it was named Allon-bacuth. Jacob Is Named Israel
Then Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse, died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak, and the name of it was called Allonbachuth.
9 T hen God appeared to Jacob again when he came from Paddan-aram, and He blessed him.
And God appeared unto Jacob again when he came out of Padanaram and blessed him.
10 G od said to him, “Your name is Jacob; You shall no longer be called Jacob, But Israel shall be your name.” Thus He called him Israel.
And God said unto him, Thy name is Jacob; thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name, and he called his name Israel.
11 G od also said to him, “I am God Almighty; Be fruitful and multiply; A nation and a company of nations shall come from you, And kings shall come forth from you.
And God said unto him, I am God Almighty; be fruitful and multiply, a nation and a company of nations (Gentiles) shall come out of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;
12 “ The land which I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give it to you, And I will give the land to your descendants after you.”
and the land which I have given to Abraham and to Isaac, to thee will I give it and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.
13 T hen God went up from him in the place where He had spoken with him.
And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.
14 J acob set up a pillar in the place where He had spoken with him, a pillar of stone, and he poured out a drink offering on it; he also poured oil on it.
And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering upon it, and he poured oil upon it.
15 S o Jacob named the place where God had spoken with him, Bethel.
And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel.
16 T hen they journeyed from Bethel; and when there was still some distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel began to give birth and she suffered severe labor.
¶ And they journeyed from Bethel, and there was but a little way to come to Ephrath when Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.
17 W hen she was in severe labor the midwife said to her, “Do not fear, for now you have another son.”
And it came to pass when she was in hard labour, that the midwife said unto her, Fear not; thou shalt have this son also.
18 I t came about as her soul was departing (for she died), that she named him Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin.
And it came to pass as her soul was departing, (for she died) that she called his name Benoni, but his father called him Benjamin.
19 S o Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem).
Thus Rachel died and was buried in the way to Ephrath, which is Bethlehem.
20 J acob set up a pillar over her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave to this day.
And Jacob set a pillar upon her grave; that is the pillar of Rachel’s grave unto this day.
21 T hen Israel journeyed on and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder.
¶ And Israel journeyed and spread his tent beyond the tower of Edar.
22 I t came about while Israel was dwelling in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. The Sons of Israel Now there were twelve sons of Jacob—
And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah, his father’s concubine, and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve:
23 t he sons of Leah: Reuben, Jacob’s firstborn, then Simeon and Levi and Judah and Issachar and Zebulun;

24 t he sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin;
The sons of Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
25 a nd the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s maid: Dan and Naphtali;
And the sons of Bilhah, Rachel’s handmaid: Dan and Naphtali.
26 a nd the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s maid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Paddan-aram.
And the sons of Zilpah, Leah’s handmaid: Gad and Asher. These are the sons of Jacob, who were born to him in Padanaram.
27 J acob came to his father Isaac at Mamre of Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had sojourned.
And Jacob came unto Isaac, his father, unto Mamre, unto the city of Arbah, which is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.
28 N ow the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years.
And the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years.
29 I saac breathed his last and died and was gathered to his people, an old man of ripe age; and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
And Isaac expired and died and was gathered unto his people, being old and full of days, and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
