1 N ow there were at Antioch, in the church that was there, prophets and teachers: Barnabas, and Simeon who was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

¶ Now there were in the congregation that was at Antioch prophets and teachers: Barnabas and Simeon that was called Niger and Lucius of Cyrene and Manaen, who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

2 W hile they were ministering to the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work unto which I have called them.

3 T hen, when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

And when they had fasted and prayed and laid their hands on them, they released them.

4 S o, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia and from there they sailed to Cyprus.

¶ So they, being sent forth by the Holy Spirit, departed unto Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.

5 W hen they reached Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews; and they also had John as their helper.

And when they arrived at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews, and they also had John as an attendant.

6 W hen they had gone through the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a magician, a Jewish false prophet whose name was Bar-Jesus,

And when they had gone through the isle unto Paphos, they found a certain wise man, a false prophet, a Jew, whose name was Barjesus,

7 w ho was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence. This man summoned Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God.

who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, a prudent man, who called for Barnabas and Saul and desired to hear the word of God.

8 B ut Elymas the magician (for so his name is translated) was opposing them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith.

But Elymas the wise man (for so is his name by interpretation) withstood them, seeking to turn away the proconsul from the faith.

9 B ut Saul, who was also known as Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, fixed his gaze on him,

Then Saul (who also is Paul), filled with the Holy Spirit, set his eyes on him

10 a nd said, “You who are full of all deceit and fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to make crooked the straight ways of the Lord?

and said, O full of all deception and all licentiousness, thou son of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord?

11 N ow, behold, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you will be blind and not see the sun for a time.” And immediately a mist and a darkness fell upon him, and he went about seeking those who would lead him by the hand.

And now, behold, the hand of the Lord is against thee, and thou shalt be blind, not seeing the sun for a season. And immediately there fell on him a mist and a darkness, and he went about seeking some to lead him by the hand.

12 T hen the proconsul believed when he saw what had happened, being amazed at the teaching of the Lord.

Then the proconsul, when he saw what was done, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the Lord.

13 N ow Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia; but John left them and returned to Jerusalem.

Now when Paul and his company sailed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia; then John, departing from them, returned to Jerusalem.

14 B ut going on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down.

¶ But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day and sat down.

15 A fter the reading of the Law and the Prophets the synagogue officials sent to them, saying, “Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it.”

And after the reading of the law and the prophets the princes of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of exhortation for the people, speak.

16 P aul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, “Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen:

Then Paul stood up, and beckoning with his hand said, Men of Israel and ye that fear God hearken.

17 T he God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He led them out from it.

The God of this people of Israel chose our fathers and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with a high arm he brought them out of it.

18 F or a period of about forty years He put up with them in the wilderness.

And for the time of about forty years, he suffered their manners in the wilderness.

19 W hen He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land as an inheritance— all of which took about four hundred and fifty years.

And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he divided their land to them by lot.

20 A fter these things He gave them judges until Samuel the prophet.

And after that he gave unto them judges about the space of four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet.

21 T hen they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

And afterward they asked for a king, and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.

22 A fter He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘ I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My will.’

And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king, to whom also he gave testimony, saying, I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after my own heart, who shall fulfil all my will.

23 F rom the descendants of this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus,

Of this man’s seed has God according to his promise raised up Jesus as Saviour unto Israel:

24 a fter John had proclaimed before His coming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

John, having first proclaimed before his coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel.

25 A nd while John was completing his course, he kept saying, ‘What do you suppose that I am? I am not He. But behold, one is coming after me the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to untie.’

And as John fulfilled his course, he said, Whom think ye that I am? I am not he. But, behold, there comes one after me, whose shoes of his feet I am not worthy to loose.

26 Brethren, sons of Abraham’s family, and those among you who fear God, to us the message of this salvation has been sent.

Men and brethren, sons of the lineage of Abraham, and whosoever among you fears God, unto you is this word of saving health sent.

27 F or those who live in Jerusalem, and their rulers, recognizing neither Him nor the utterances of the prophets which are read every Sabbath, fulfilled these by condemning Him.

For those that dwell at Jerusalem and their princes, because they knew him not nor yet the voices of the prophets who are read every sabbath day, they have fulfilled them in condemning him.

28 A nd though they found no ground for putting Him to death, they asked Pilate that He be executed.

And without finding cause of death in him, yet they asked Pilate that he should be slain.

29 W hen they had carried out all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the cross and laid Him in a tomb.

And when they had fulfilled all that was written of him, they took him down from the tree and laid him in a sepulchre.

30 B ut God raised Him from the dead;

But God raised him from the dead,

31 a nd for many days He appeared to those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, the very ones who are now His witnesses to the people.

and he was seen many days by those who came up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who until now are his witnesses unto the people.

32 A nd we preach to you the good news of the promise made to the fathers,

And we declare unto you the gospel of the promise which was made unto the fathers,

33 t hat God has fulfilled this promise to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, ‘ You are My Son; today i have begotten You.’

which God has fulfilled unto us their children, in that he has raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.

34 A s for the fact that He raised Him up from the dead, no longer to return to decay, He has spoken in this way: ‘ I will give you the holy and sure blessings of David.’

And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said this, I will give you the sure mercies promised to David.

35 T herefore He also says in another Psalm, ‘ You will not allow Your Holy One to undergo decay.’

Therefore he also says in another place, Thou shalt not suffer thy Holy One to see corruption.

36 F or David, after he had served the purpose of God in his own generation, fell asleep, and was laid among his fathers and underwent decay;

For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep and was gathered unto his fathers and saw corruption;

37 b ut He whom God raised did not undergo decay.

but he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.

38 T herefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through Him forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you,

Be it known unto you, therefore, men and brethren, that through this one is preached unto you the remission of sins;

39 a nd through Him everyone who believes is freed from all things, from which you could not be freed through the Law of Moses.

and in him all that believe are justified from all the things from which ye could not be justified by the law of Moses.

40 T herefore take heed, so that the thing spoken of in the Prophets may not come upon you:

Beware, therefore, lest what is spoken of in the prophets come upon you:

41 Behold, you scoffers, and marvel, and perish; For I am accomplishing a work in your days, A work which you will never believe, though someone should describe it to you.’”

Behold, ye despisers, and wonder and perish, for I do a work in your days, a work which ye would in no wise believe, if one should declare it unto you.

42 A s Paul and Barnabas were going out, the people kept begging that these things might be spoken to them the next Sabbath.

¶ And when they were gone out of the synagogue of the Jews, the Gentiles besought that these words might be spoken to them the next sabbath.

43 N ow when the meeting of the synagogue had broken up, many of the Jews and of the God-fearing proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, were urging them to continue in the grace of God. Paul Turns to the Gentiles

Now when the synagogue was dismissed, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, persuaded them to remain in the grace of God.

44 T he next Sabbath nearly the whole city assembled to hear the word of the Lord.

And the next sabbath day almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God.

45 B ut when the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and began contradicting the things spoken by Paul, and were blaspheming.

But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy and spoke against that which Paul said, contradicting and blaspheming.

46 P aul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, “It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first; since you repudiate it and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we are turning to the Gentiles.

Then Paul and Barnabas speaking with freedom, said, It was necessary indeed that the word of God should first have been spoken to you; but seeing ye put it from you and judge yourselves unworthy of eternal life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.

47 F or so the Lord has commanded us, ‘ I have placed You as a light for the Gentiles, That You may bring salvation to the end of the earth.’”

For so has the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles that thou should be for saving health unto the ends of the earth.

48 W hen the Gentiles heard this, they began rejoicing and glorifying the word of the Lord; and as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed.

And when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord, and as many as were ordained to eternal life believed.

49 A nd the word of the Lord was being spread through the whole region.

And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region.

50 B ut the Jews incited the devout women of prominence and the leading men of the city, and instigated a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and drove them out of their district.

But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women and the principals of the city and raised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expelled them out of their borders.

51 B ut they shook off the dust of their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium.

But they shook off the dust of their feet against them and came unto Iconium.

52 A nd the disciples were continually filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.
