1 S imon Peter, a bond-servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who have received a faith of the same kind as ours, by the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:
¶ Simon Peter, slave and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those that have obtained like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ:
2 G race and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;
Grace and peace be multiplied unto you in the knowledge of God and of our Lord Jesus,
3 s eeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.
as all things that pertain to life and to godliness are given us of his divine power, through the knowledge of him that has called us by his glory and virtue,
4 F or by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, so that by them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.
whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises, that by these ye might be made participants of the divine nature, having fled the corruption that is in the world through lust.
5 N ow for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge,
¶ Ye also, giving all diligence to the same, show forth virtue in your faith; and in virtue, knowledge;
6 a nd in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness,
and in knowledge, temperance; and in temperance, patience; and in patience, fear of God;
7 a nd in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love.
and in fear of God, brotherly love; and in brotherly love, charity.
8 F or if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For if these things are in you and abound, they shall not let you be idle nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
9 F or he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins.
But he that lacks these things is blind and walks feeling the way with his hand, having forgotten that he was purged from his old sins.
10 T herefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble;
Therefore, brethren, give all the more diligence to make your calling and election sure; for doing these things, ye shall never fall.
11 f or in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.
Because in this manner the entrance shall be abundantly administered unto you in the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
12 T herefore, I will always be ready to remind you of these things, even though you already know them, and have been established in the truth which is present with you.
¶ For this reason, I will not leave off reminding you always of these things, although ye know them and are established in the present truth.
13 I consider it right, as long as I am in this earthly dwelling, to stir you up by way of reminder,
Because I have the right (as long as I am in this tabernacle) to stir you up by reminding you,
14 k nowing that the laying aside of my earthly dwelling is imminent, as also our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.
knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ has declared unto me.
15 A nd I will also be diligent that at any time after my departure you will be able to call these things to mind. Eyewitnesses
I will also make sure with diligence that after my decease ye might remember these things.
16 F or we did not follow cleverly devised tales when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty.
¶ For we have not made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, following cunningly devised fables, but as eyewitnesses of his majesty.
17 F or when He received honor and glory from God the Father, such an utterance as this was made to Him by the Majestic Glory, “This is My beloved Son with whom I am well-pleased”—
For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
18 a nd we ourselves heard this utterance made from heaven when we were with Him on the holy mountain.
And we heard this voice which came from heaven, when we were together with him in the holy mount.
19 S o we have the prophetic word made more sure, to which you do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.
¶ We have also the most sure word of the prophets, unto which ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts,
20 B ut know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation,
understanding this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
21 f or no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
For the prophecy did not come in times past by the will of man, but the holy men of God spoke being inspired by the Holy Spirit.
