1 N ow after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,
¶ Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
2 “ Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him.”
saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? We have seen his star in the east and are come to worship him.
3 W hen Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled and all Jerusalem with him.
4 G athering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born.
And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he asked them where the Christ should be born.
5 T hey said to him, “ In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet:
And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea, for thus it is written by the prophet,
6 ‘ And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, Are by no means least among the leaders of Judah; For out of you shall come forth a Ruler Who will shepherd My people Israel.’”
And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda, for out of thee shall come a Leader that shall shepherd my people Israel.
7 T hen Herod secretly called the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared.
Then Herod, calling the wise men unto him secretly, understood of them with diligence the time of the appearing of the star;
8 A nd he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him.”
and sending them to Bethlehem, he said, Go there and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again that I may come and worship him also.
9 A fter hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was.
¶ When they had heard the king, they departed; and, behold, the star, which they had seen in the east, went before them until it arrived and stood over where the young child was.
10 W hen they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.
Seeing the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
11 A fter coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
And entering into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother; and falling down, they worshipped him; and opening their treasures, they offered him gifts: gold and frankincense and myrrh.
12 A nd having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way. The Flight to Egypt
And being warned by divine revelation in dreams that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
13 N ow when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him.”
¶ And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in dreams, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother and flee into Egypt and remain there until I bring thee word, for Herod will seek the young child to kill him.
14 S o Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt.
And awaking, he took the young child and his mother by night and departed into Egypt
15 H e remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “ Out of Egypt I called My Son.” Herod Slaughters Babies
and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
16 T hen when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi.
¶ Then Herod, seeing that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth and sent forth and killed all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the borders thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had understood of the wise men.
17 T hen what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled:
Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by the Lord through Jeremiah the prophet, saying,
18 “ A voice was heard in Ramah, Weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; And she refused to be comforted, Because they were no more.”
In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation and weeping and great mourning, Rachel was weeping for her children and would not be comforted because they perished.
19 B ut when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, and said,
¶ But when Herod was dead, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in dreams to Joseph in Egypt,
20 “ Get up, take the Child and His mother, and go into the land of Israel; for those who sought the Child’s life are dead.”
saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother and go into the land of Israel, for they are dead who sought the death of the young child.
21 S o Joseph got up, took the Child and His mother, and came into the land of Israel.
And he arose and took the young child and his mother and came into the land of Israel.
22 B ut when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there. Then after being warned by God in a dream, he left for the regions of Galilee,
But when he heard that Archelaus reigned in Judaea in the place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there; notwithstanding, being warned by divine revelation in dreams, he withdrew into the parts of Galilee,
23 a nd came and lived in a city called Nazareth. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: “He shall be called a Nazarene.”
and he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that it might be fulfilled, which was spoken by the prophets, that he shall be called a Nazarene.
