1 N ow Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. She had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar.
¶ Now Sarai Abram’s wife bore him no children; and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.
2 A nd Sarai said to Abram, See here, the Lord has restrained me from bearing. I am asking you to have intercourse with my maid; it may be that I can obtain children by her. And Abram listened to and heeded what Sarai said.
And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD has restrained me from bearing; I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
3 S o Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar her Egyptian maid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

4 A nd he had intercourse with Hagar, and she became pregnant; and when she saw that she was with child, she looked with contempt upon her mistress and despised her.
¶ And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.
5 T hen Sarai said to Abram, May my wrong and deprivation of rights be upon you! I gave my maid into your bosom, and when she saw that she was with child, I was contemptible and despised in her eyes. May the Lord be the judge between you and me.
Then Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee; I have given my maid into thy bosom, and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes; the LORD judge between me and thee.
6 B ut Abram said to Sarai, See here, your maid is in your hands and power; do as you please with her. And when Sarai dealt severely with her, humbling and afflicting her, she fled from her.
But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleases thee. Then Sarai afflicted her, and she fled from her face.
7 B ut the Angel of the Lord found her by a spring of water in the wilderness on the road to Shur.
¶ And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.
8 A nd He said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where did you come from, and where are you intending to go? And she said, I am running away from my mistress Sarai.
And he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, where didst thou come from and where wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.
9 T he Angel of the Lord said to her, Go back to your mistress and submit to her control.
And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hands.
10 A lso the Angel of the Lord said to her, I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be numbered for multitude.
¶ And the angel of the LORD also said unto her, I will multiply thy seed so exceedingly that it shall not be numbered for the multitude.
11 A nd the Angel of the Lord continued, See now, you are with child and shall bear a son, and shall call his name Ishmael, because the Lord has heard and paid attention to your affliction.
And the angel of the LORD yet said unto her, Behold, thou art with child and shalt bear a son and shalt call his name Ishmael, because the LORD has heard thy affliction.
12 A nd he will be as a wild ass among men; his hand will be against every man and every man’s hand against him, and he will live to the east and on the borders of all his kinsmen.
And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.
13 S o she called the name of the Lord Who spoke to her, You are a God of seeing, for she said, Have I even here looked upon Him Who sees me ? Or have I here also seen Him Who sees me?
And she called the name of the LORD that spoke unto her, Thou God that is seen: for she said, Have I not also here seen the back of him that sees me?
14 T herefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; it is between Kadesh and Bered.
Therefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
15 A nd Hagar bore Abram a son, and Abram called the name of his son whom Hagar bore Ishmael.
¶ And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bore, Ishmael.
16 A bram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael.
And Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
