1 ¶ And David departed from there and escaped to the cave Adullam; and when his brethren and all his father’s house heard it, they went down there to him.

Davide partì di là e si rifugiò nella spelonca di Adullam. Quando i suoi fratelli e tutta la famiglia di suo padre lo seppero, scesero là per unirsi a lui.

2 A nd every one that was in distress and every one that was in debt and all whose souls were bitter gathered themselves unto him, and he became the captain over them, and there were about four hundred men with him.

Tutti quelli che erano in difficoltà, che avevano debiti o che erano scontenti, si radunarono presso di lui ed egli divenne loro capo. Così ebbe con sé circa quattrocento uomini.

3 A nd David went from there to Mizpeh of Moab, and he said unto the king of Moab, Let my father and my mother, I pray thee, come forth and be with you until I know what God will make of me.

Di là Davide andò a Mispa di Moab e disse al re di Moab: «Permetti che mio padre e mia madre vengano a stare da voi, fino a quando io sappia quello che Dio farà di me».

4 A nd he brought them before the king of Moab, and they dwelt with him all the while that David was in the fortress.

Egli dunque li condusse davanti al re di Moab ed essi rimasero con lui tutto il tempo che Davide fu nella sua fortezza.

5 A nd the prophet Gad said unto David, do not abide in this fortress; depart, and go into the land of Judah. Then David departed and came into the forest of Hareth.

Il profeta Gad disse a Davide: «Non stare più in questa fortezza; parti e va’ nel paese di Giuda». Davide allora partì, e giunse nella foresta di Cheret. Massacro dei sacerdoti e degli abitanti di Nob per ordine di Saul

6 ¶ When Saul heard how David had appeared and the men that were with him (now Saul abode in Gibeah under a tree in Ramah, having his spear in his hand, and all his slaves were standing about him),

Saul seppe che Davide e gli uomini che erano con lui erano stati visti. Saul si trovava allora a Ghibea, seduto sotto la tamerice che è sull’altura; aveva in mano la lancia, e tutti i suoi servitori gli stavano intorno.

7 t hen Saul said unto his slaves that stood about him, Hear now, ye sons of Jemini, will the son of Jesse give every one of you fields and vineyards and make you all captains of thousands and captains of hundreds

Saul disse ai servitori che gli stavano intorno: «Ascoltate ora, Beniaminiti! Il figlio d’Isai darà forse a voi tutti campi e vigne? Farà egli di tutti voi dei capi di migliaia e dei capi di centinaia?

8 t hat all of you have conspired against me, and there is no one that shows me that my son has made a league with the son of Jesse, and there is none of you that is sorry for me or shows unto me that my son has stirred up my slave against me, to lie in wait against me, as at this day?

Perché allora avete tutti congiurato contro di me e non c’è nessuno che mi abbia informato dell’alleanza che mio figlio ha fatta con il figlio d’Isai? Non c’è nessuno di voi che mi compianga e m’informi che mio figlio ha sollevato contro di me il mio servo perché mi tenda insidie come fa oggi?»

9 T hen Doeg, the Edomite, who was set over the slaves of Saul, answered and said, I saw the son of Jesse coming to Nob to Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub.

E Doeg, l’Idumeo, che si trovava tra i servitori di Saul, rispose e disse: «Io ho visto il figlio d’Isai giungere a Nob da Aimelec, figlio di Aitub,

10 A nd he enquired of the LORD for him and gave him provision and gave him the sword of Goliath, the Philistine.

il quale consultò il Signore per lui, gli diede dei viveri e gli diede la spada di Goliat il Filisteo».

11 T hen the king sent to call Ahimelech, the priest, the son of Ahitub, and all his father’s house, the priests that were in Nob; and they all came to the king.

Allora il re mandò a chiamare il sacerdote Aimelec, figlio di Aitub, e tutta la famiglia di suo padre, vale a dire i sacerdoti che erano a Nob. Tutti vennero dal re.

12 A nd Saul said, Hear now, thou son of Ahitub. And he answered, Here I am, my lord.

Saul disse: «Ora ascolta, figlio di Aitub!» Ed egli rispose: «Eccomi, mio signore!»

13 A nd Saul said unto him, Why have ye conspired against me, thou and the son of Jesse, in that thou hast given him bread and a sword and hast enquired of God for him that he should rise against me, to lie in wait, as at this day?

E Saul gli disse: «Perché tu e il figlio d’Isai avete congiurato contro di me? Perché gli hai dato del pane e una spada e hai consultato Dio per lui affinché insorga contro di me e mi tenda insidie come fa oggi?»

14 T hen Ahimelech answered the king and said, And who is so faithful among all thy slaves as David, the king’s son-in-law, who goes at thy bidding and is honourable in thy house?

Allora Aimelec rispose al re e disse: «Chi mai fra tutti i tuoi servi è fedele come Davide, genero del re, pronto al tuo comando e onorato nella tua casa?

15 D id I begin to enquire of God for him today? Be it far from me; let not the king impute any thing unto his slave nor to all the house of my father, for thy slave knew nothing of all this, less or more.

Ho forse cominciato oggi a consultare Dio per lui? Lungi da me il pensiero di tradirti! Non attribuisca il re nulla di simile al suo servo o a tutta la famiglia di mio padre, perché il tuo servo non sa cosa alcuna, piccola o grande, di tutto questo».

16 A nd the king said, Thou shalt surely die, Ahimelech, thou and all thy father’s house.

Il re disse: «Tu morirai senz’altro, Aimelec, tu con tutta la famiglia di tuo padre!»

17 T hen the king said unto the footmen that stood about him, Turn and slay the priests of the LORD because their hand also is with David and because they knew when he fled and did not show it to me. But the slaves of the king would not put forth their hands to fall upon the priests of the LORD.

Il re disse alle guardie che gli stavano intorno: «Avanzate e uccidete i sacerdoti del Signore, perché anche loro sono d’accordo con Davide; sapevano che egli era fuggito e non mi hanno informato». Ma i servitori del re non vollero mettere le mani addosso ai sacerdoti del Signore.

18 T hen the king said to Doeg, Turn thou and fall upon the priests. And Doeg, the Edomite, turned and he fell upon the priests and slew on that day eighty-five men that wore a linen ephod.

Il re disse a Doeg: «Fatti avanti tu e uccidi i sacerdoti!» Doeg, l’Idumeo, si fece avanti, si avventò addosso ai sacerdoti e uccise in quel giorno ottantacinque persone che portavano l’efod di lino.

19 A nd Nob, the city of the priests, he smote with the edge of the sword, both men and women, children and sucklings and oxen and asses and sheep with the edge of the sword.

Saul passò a fil di spada anche Nob, la città dei sacerdoti: uomini, donne, bambini, lattanti, buoi, asini e pecore; passò tutti a fil di spada.

20 ¶ And one of the sons of Ahimelech, the son of Ahitub, named Abiathar, escaped and fled after David.

Tuttavia uno dei figli di Aimelec, figlio di Aitub, di nome Abiatar, scampò e si rifugiò presso Davide.

21 A nd Abiathar gave David the news that Saul had slain the LORD’s priests.

Abiatar riferì a Davide che Saul aveva ucciso i sacerdoti del Signore.

22 A nd David said unto Abiathar, I knew it that day when Doeg, the Edomite, was there that he would surely tell Saul. I have given cause before Saul against all the persons of thy father’s house.

Davide disse ad Abiatar: «Io sapevo bene, quel giorno, che Doeg l’Idumeo era là, che egli avrebbe senza dubbio avvertito Saul; io sono la causa della morte di tutte le persone della famiglia di tuo padre.

23 A bide thou with me; do not fear, for he that seeks my life seeks thy life; it is good that thou shalt be kept with me.

Resta con me, non temere; chi cerca la mia vita cerca la tua; con me sarai al sicuro».
