1 ¶ Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of charity, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies,

Se dunque v’è qualche consolazione in Cristo, se vi è qualche conforto d’amore, se vi è qualche comunione di Spirito, se vi è qualche tenerezza di affetto e qualche compassione,

2 f ulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same charity, unanimous, minding the one thing.

rendete perfetta la mia gioia, avendo un medesimo pensare, un medesimo amore, essendo di un animo solo e di un unico sentimento.

3 L et nothing be done through strife or vainglory, but in humility let each esteem others better than themselves,

Non fate nulla per spirito di parte o per vanagloria, ma ciascuno, con umiltà, stimi gli altri superiori a se stesso,

4 w ith each one not looking to their own things, but also to the things of others.

cercando ciascuno non il proprio interesse, ma {anche} quello degli altri.

5 L et this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus,

Abbiate in voi lo stesso sentimento che è stato anche in Cristo Gesù,

6 w ho, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God,

il quale, pur essendo in forma di Dio, non considerò l’essere uguale a Dio qualcosa a cui aggrapparsi gelosamente,

7 b ut emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, made in the likeness of men,

ma svuotò se stesso, prendendo forma di servo, divenendo simile agli uomini;

8 a nd being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

trovato esteriormente come un uomo, umiliò se stesso, facendosi ubbidiente fino alla morte, e alla morte di croce.

9 T herefore, God also has highly exalted him and given him a name which is above every name,

12 ¶ Therefore, my beloved, as ye have always hearkened, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own saving health with fear and trembling.

Così, miei cari, voi che foste sempre ubbidienti, non solo come quando ero presente, ma molto più adesso che sono assente, adoperatevi al compimento della vostra salvezza con timore e tremore;

13 F or it is God who works in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.

infatti è Dio che produce in voi il volere e l’agire, secondo il suo disegno benevolo.

14 ¶ Do all things without murmurings and doubts,

Fate ogni cosa senza mormorii e senza dispute,

15 t hat ye may be blameless and innocent, children of God without rebuke in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world,

perché siate irreprensibili e integri, figli di Dio senza biasimo in mezzo a una generazione storta e perversa, nella quale risplendete come astri nel mondo,

16 h olding fast the word of life, that I may glory in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

tenendo alta la parola di vita, in modo che nel giorno di Cristo io possa vantarmi di non aver corso invano, né invano faticato.

17 A nd even if I am poured out as an offering upon the sacrifice and service of your faith, I joy and rejoice with you all.

Ma se anche vengo offerto in libazione sul sacrificio e sul servizio della vostra fede, ne gioisco e me ne rallegro con tutti voi;

18 F or the same cause ye also have joy and rejoice with me.

e nello stesso modo gioitene anche voi e rallegratevene con me. Missione di Timoteo ed Epafròdito

19 B ut I trust in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy shortly unto you, that I also may be of good comfort when I know your state.

Ora spero nel Signore Gesù di mandarvi presto Timoteo per essere io pure incoraggiato nel ricevere vostre notizie.

20 F or I have no one likeminded, who will naturally care for your state.

Infatti non ho nessuno di animo pari al suo che abbia sinceramente a cuore quel che vi concerne.

21 F or all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ’s.

Poiché tutti cercano i loro propri interessi, e non quelli di Cristo Gesù.

22 B ut ye know the proof of him, that as a son with the father, he has served with me in the gospel.

Voi sapete che egli ha dato buona prova di sé, perché ha servito con me la causa del vangelo, come un figlio con il proprio padre.

23 T herefore, I hope to send him presently, so soon as I shall see how it will go with me.

Spero dunque di mandarvelo appena avrò visto come andrà a finire la mia situazione;

24 B ut I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly.

ma ho fiducia nel Signore di poter venire presto anch’io.

25 Y et I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother and companion in labour and fellowsoldier, but your messenger and he that ministered to my needs.

Però ho ritenuto necessario mandarvi Epafròdito, mio fratello, mio compagno di lavoro e di lotta, inviatomi da voi per provvedere alle mie necessità;

26 F or he longed after you all and was full of heaviness, because ye had heard that he had been sick

egli aveva un gran desiderio di vedervi tutti ed era preoccupato perché avevate saputo della sua malattia.

27 F or indeed he was sick near unto death, but God had mercy on him and not on him only, but on me also, lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.

È stato ammalato, infatti, e ben vicino alla morte, ma Dio ha avuto pietà di lui; e non soltanto di lui, ma anche di me, perché io non avessi dolore su dolore.

28 I sent him, therefore, the more carefully, that when ye see him again, ye may rejoice and that I may be the less sorrowful.

Perciò ve l’ho mandato con gran premura, affinché vedendolo di nuovo vi rallegriate, e anch’io sia meno afflitto.

29 R eceive him therefore in the Lord with all gladness and esteem such

Accoglietelo dunque nel Signore con ogni gioia e abbiate stima di uomini simili;

30 b ecause for the work of the Christ he was near unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.

perché è per l’opera di Cristo che egli è stato molto vicino alla morte, avendo rischiato la propria vita per supplire ai servizi che non potevate rendermi voi stessi.
