1 ¶ Therefore, seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, leaving behind all the weight of the sin which surrounds us, let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Anche noi, dunque, poiché siamo circondati da una così grande schiera di testimoni, deponiamo ogni peso e il peccato che così facilmente ci avvolge, e corriamo con perseveranza la gara che ci è proposta,

2 w ith our eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who having been offered joy, endured the cross, despising the shame and was seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

fissando lo sguardo su Gesù, colui che crea la fede e la rende perfetta. Per la gioia che gli era posta dinanzi egli sopportò la croce, disprezzando l’infamia, e si è seduto alla destra del trono di Dio.

3 F or consider him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself lest ye be wearied in your souls and faint.

Considerate perciò colui che ha sopportato una simile ostilità contro la sua persona da parte dei peccatori, affinché non vi stanchiate perdendovi d’animo.

4 ¶ Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, fighting against sin.

Voi non avete ancora resistito fino al sangue nella lotta contro il peccato,

5 A nd ye have quite forgotten the consolation which speaks unto you as unto sons, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art reproved of him:

e avete dimenticato l’esortazione rivolta a voi come a figli: «Figlio mio, non disprezzare la disciplina del Signore, e non ti perdere d’animo quando sei da lui ripreso;

6 f or whom the Lord loves, he chastens and scourges everyone whom he receives as a son.

perché il Signore corregge quelli che egli ama, e punisce tutti coloro che riconosce come figli».

7 I f ye endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father does not chasten?

Sopportate queste cose per la vostra correzione. Dio vi tratta come figli; infatti, qual è il figlio che il padre non corregga?

8 B ut if ye are without chastisement, of which all the sons are partakers, then ye are bastards, and not sons.

Ma se siete esclusi da quella correzione di cui tutti hanno avuto la loro parte, allora siete bastardi e non figli.

9 F urthermore, we have had fathers of our flesh who corrected us, and we gave them reverence; is it not much better to be in subjection to the Father of spirits, and we shall live?

Inoltre abbiamo avuto per correttori i nostri padri secondo la carne e li abbiamo rispettati; non ci sottometteremo forse molto di più al Padre degli spiriti per avere la vita?

10 F or they verily for a few days chastened us as it seemed good unto them, but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.

Essi infatti ci correggevano per pochi giorni come sembrava loro opportuno; ma egli lo fa per il nostro bene, affinché siamo partecipi della sua santità.

11 I t is true that no chastening at present seems to be cause for joy, but rather for grief; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto those who are exercised by it.

È vero che qualunque correzione sul momento non sembra recare gioia, ma tristezza; in seguito tuttavia produce un frutto di pace e di giustizia in coloro che sono stati addestrati per mezzo di essa.

12 T herefore, lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees,

Perciò, rinfrancate le mani cadenti e le ginocchia vacillanti;

13 a nd make straight steps unto your feet, so that which is lame will not turn out of the way, but let it rather be healed.

fate sentieri diritti per i vostri passi, affinché quel che è zoppo non esca fuori di strada, ma piuttosto guarisca.

14 F ollow peace with everyone and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord:

Impegnatevi a cercare la pace con tutti e la santificazione, senza la quale nessuno vedrà il Signore;

15 l ooking diligently that no one deviate from the grace of God, lest any root of bitterness springing up impede you, and thereby many be defiled,

vigilando bene che nessuno resti privo della grazia di Dio, che nessuna radice velenosa venga fuori a darvi molestia e molti di voi ne siano contagiati,

16 l est there be any fornicator or profane person as Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright.

e che nessuno sia fornicatore o profano, come Esaù, che per una sola pietanza vendette la sua primogenitura.

17 F or ye know how that afterward, desiring to inherit the blessing, he was rejected; for he found no place of repentance, though he sought it carefully with tears.

Infatti sapete che anche più tardi, quando volle ereditare la benedizione, fu respinto, sebbene la richiedesse con lacrime, perché non ci fu ravvedimento.

18 ¶ For ye are not come unto the mount that might be touched and that burned with fire nor unto blackness and darkness and tempest

Voi non vi siete avvicinati al monte che si poteva toccare con mano, e che era avvolto nel fuoco, né all’oscurità, né alle tenebre, né alla tempesta,

19 a nd the sound of a trumpet and the voice of words, which voice those that heard intreated that the word should not be spoken to them any more;

né allo squillo di tromba, né al suono di parole, tale che quanti l’udirono supplicarono che più non fosse loro rivolta altra parola;

20 ( for they could not endure that which was commanded, and if so much as a beast should touch the mountain, it shall be stoned or thrust through with a dart:

perché non potevano sopportare quest’ordine: «Se anche una bestia tocca il monte sia lapidata».

21 a nd so terrible was the sight that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake);

Tanto spaventevole era lo spettacolo, che Mosè disse: «Sono spaventato e tremo».

22 b ut ye are come unto Mount Sion and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

Voi vi siete invece avvicinati al monte Sion, alla città del Dio vivente, la Gerusalemme celeste, alla festante riunione delle miriadi angeliche,

23 t o the congregation of the called out ones of the firstborn, who are registered in the heavens and to God the Judge of all and to the spirits of just men made perfect

all’assemblea dei primogeniti che sono scritti nei cieli, a Dio, il giudice di tutti, agli spiriti dei giusti resi perfetti,

24 a nd to Jesus, the mediator of the new testament and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaks better than that of Abel.

a Gesù, il mediatore del nuovo patto e al sangue dell’aspersione, che parla meglio del sangue di Abele.

25 S ee that you do not refuse him that speaks. For if those who refused him that spoke on earth did not escape, much less shall we escape, if we turn away from him that speaks from the heavens,

Badate di non rifiutarvi di ascoltare colui che parla; perché se non scamparono quelli, quando rifiutarono di ascoltare colui che promulgava oracoli sulla terra, molto meno scamperemo noi, se voltiamo le spalle a colui che parla dal cielo;

26 w hose voice then shook the earth; but now he has promised, saying, Yet even once, I shall shake not the earth only, but also the heaven.

la cui voce scosse allora la terra e che adesso ha fatto questa promessa: «Ancora una volta farò tremare non solo la terra, ma anche il cielo».

27 A nd this word, Yet even once, signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.

Or questo «ancora una volta» sta a indicare la rimozione delle cose scosse come di cose fatte perché sussistano quelle che non sono scosse.

28 T herefore, receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us hold fast to the grace, by which we serve God, pleasing him with reverence and godly fear:

Perciò, ricevendo un regno che non può essere scosso, siamo riconoscenti e offriamo a Dio un culto gradito, con riverenza e timore!

29 f or our God is a consuming fire.

Perché il nostro Dio è anche un fuoco consumante.
