1 ¶ Hear the word of the LORD, ye sons of Israel; for the LORD contends with the inhabitants of the land because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the earth.

Ascoltate la parola del Signore, o figli d’Israele. Il Signore ha una contestazione con gli abitanti del paese, poiché non c’è verità, né misericordia, né conoscenza di Dio nel paese:

2 B y swearing and lying and murdering and stealing and committing adultery, they prevailed, and blood touches blood.

«Si spergiura, si mente, si uccide, si ruba, si commette adulterio; si rompe ogni limite e si aggiunge sangue a sangue.

3 T herefore the earth shall mourn, and every one that dwells therein shall be cut off, with the beasts of the field and the fowls of heaven; and even the fishes of the sea shall be caught.

Per questo il paese sarà in lutto, tutti quelli che lo abitano languiranno, e con loro gli animali della campagna e gli uccelli del cielo; perfino i pesci del mare spariranno.

4 C ertainly man does not contend with nor reprehend man; for thy people are as those that resist the priest.

Tuttavia nessuno contesti e nessuno rimproveri! poiché il tuo popolo è come quelli che litigano con il sacerdote.

5 T herefore thou shalt fall in the day, and the prophet shall also fall with thee by night, and I will cut off thy mother.

Perciò tu cadrai di giorno, e anche il profeta cadrà con te di notte; e io distruggerò tua madre.

6 ¶ My people were cut off because they lacked wisdom; because thou hast rejected wisdom, I will cast thee out of the priesthood; seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy sons.

«Il mio popolo perisce per mancanza di conoscenza. Poiché tu hai rifiutato la conoscenza, anch’io rifiuterò di averti come mio sacerdote; poiché tu hai dimenticato la legge del tuo Dio, anch’io dimenticherò i tuoi figli.

7 A ccording to their greatness, so did they sin against me; therefore I will change their honour into shame.

Più si sono moltiplicati, e più hanno peccato contro di me; io trasformerò la loro gloria in vergogna.

8 T hey eat up the sin of my people, and in their iniquity they raise up their soul.

Si nutrono dei peccati del mio popolo; il loro cuore è avido della sua malvagità.

9 T he people shall become like the priest; and I will visit his ways upon him, and they shall reward him according to his doings.

Perciò il sacerdote subirà la stessa sorte del popolo: io lo punirò per la sua condotta e lo ripagherò delle sue azioni.

10 F or they shall eat and not be satisfied; they shall commit whoredom and shall not increase because they have quit showing hospitality unto the LORD.

Mangeranno, ma non saranno saziati; si prostituiranno, ma non si moltiplicheranno, perché hanno abbandonato il servizio del Signore.

11 W horedom and wine and new wine take away the heart.

«Prostituzione, vino e mosto tolgono il senno.

12 ¶ My people ask counsel of their wooden idol, and their stick declares unto them; for the spirit of whoredoms has caused them to err, and they have gone a whoring under their gods.

Il mio popolo consulta il suo legno, e il suo bastone gli dà il responso; poiché lo spirito della prostituzione lo svia, esso si prostituisce, allontanandosi dal suo Dio.

13 T hey sacrifice upon the tops of the mountains and burn incense upon the hills, under oaks and poplars and elms, that had good shade; therefore your daughters shall commit whoredom, and your daughters-in-law shall commit adultery.

Sacrificano in cima ai monti, bruciano incenso sui colli sotto la quercia, il pioppo e il terebinto, perché la loro ombra è buona; perciò le vostre figlie si prostituiscono e le vostre nuore commettono adulterio.

14 I will not visit upon your daughters when they commit whoredom, nor upon your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery: for they offer with whores, and they sacrifice with cult prostitutes; therefore the people without understanding shall fall.

Io non punirò le vostre figlie perché si prostituiscono, né le vostre nuore perché commettono adulterio; poiché essi stessi si appartano con le prostitute e sacrificano con donne impudiche; il popolo, che non ha discernimento, corre alla rovina.

15 T hough thou, Israel, play the harlot, yet let not Judah be guilty; and do not come unto Gilgal, neither go up to Bethaven, nor swear, The LORD lives,

«Se tu, Israele, ti prostituisci, Giuda almeno non si renda colpevole! Non andate a Ghilgal, non salite a Bet-Aven, e non giurate dicendo: “Il Signore vive!”

16 f or Israel has turned away as a wild heifer; shall the LORD now feed them as rams in a large place?

Poiché Israele è ribelle come una vitella recalcitrante, ora il Signore lo farà pascolare come un agnello in luogo spazioso?

17 E phraim is given over to idols; leave him.

Efraim si è unito agli idoli; lascialo!

18 T heir drink has become corrupted; they have committed whoredom continually; her princes love gifts, shamefully.

Quando hanno finito di sbevazzare si danno alla prostituzione; i loro capi amano con passione l’infamia.

19 T he wind has bound her up in her wings, and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.

Il vento si legherà Efraim alle proprie ali, ed essi avranno vergogna dei loro sacrifici.
