1 ¶ Whosoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God; and anyone that loves him that begat also loves him that is born of him.

Chiunque crede che Gesù è il Cristo, è nato da Dio; e chiunque ama colui che ha generato, ama {anche} chi è stato da lui generato.

2 I n this we know that we love the sons of God, when we love God and keep his commandments.

Da questo sappiamo che amiamo i figli di Dio: quando amiamo Dio e mettiamo in pratica i suoi comandamenti.

3 F or this is the charity of God, that we keep his commandments, and his commandments are not grievous.

Perché questo è l’amore di Dio: che osserviamo i suoi comandamenti; e i suoi comandamenti non sono gravosi.

4 F or whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith.

Poiché tutto quello che è nato da Dio vince il mondo; e questa è la vittoria che ha vinto il mondo: la nostra fede.

5 W ho is he that overcomes the world, but he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

Chi è che vince il mondo, se non colui che crede che Gesù è il Figlio di Dio?

6 ¶ This is Jesus, the Christ, who came by water and blood; not by water only, but by water and blood. And the Spirit is he that bears witness, because the Spirit is the truth.

Egli è colui che è venuto con acqua e sangue, cioè Gesù Cristo; non con acqua soltanto, ma con l’acqua e con il sangue. Ed è lo Spirito che ne rende testimonianza, perché lo Spirito è la verità.

7 F or there are three that bear witness in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.

Poiché tre sono quelli che rendono testimonianza:

8 A nd there are three that bear witness on earth, the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree in one.

lo Spirito, l’acqua e il sangue, e i tre sono concordi.

9 I f we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he has testified of his Son.

Se accettiamo la testimonianza degli uomini, la testimonianza di Dio è maggiore, poiché questa è la testimonianza di Dio che egli ha reso al Figlio suo.

10 ¶ He that believes in the Son of God has the witness of God in himself; he that does not believe God has made God a liar; because he does not believe the witness that God has testified of his Son.

Chi crede nel Figlio di Dio ha questa testimonianza in sé; chi non crede a Dio, lo fa bugiardo, perché non crede alla testimonianza che Dio ha resa al proprio Figlio.

11 A nd this is the witness, that God has given eternal life to us, and this life is in his Son.

E la testimonianza è questa: Dio ci ha dato la vita eterna, e questa vita è nel Figlio suo.

12 H e that has the Son has life; and he that does not have the Son of God does not have life.

Chi ha il Figlio ha la vita; chi non ha il Figlio di Dio, non ha la vita.

13 T hese things I have written unto you that believe in the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that ye have eternal life and that ye may believe in the name of the Son of God.

Vi ho scritto queste cose perché sappiate che avete la vita eterna, voi che credete nel nome del Figlio di Dio.

14 ¶ And this is the confidence that we have in God, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he hears us:

Questa è la fiducia che abbiamo in lui: che se domandiamo qualche cosa secondo la sua volontà, egli ci esaudisce.

15 A nd if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we also know that we have the petitions that we asked of him.

Se sappiamo che egli ci esaudisce in ciò che gli chiediamo, noi sappiamo di avere le cose che gli abbiamo chieste.

16 I f any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask God, and he shall give him life that is, unto those that do not sin unto death. There is sin unto death, for which I do not say that you should pray.

Se qualcuno vede suo fratello commettere un peccato che non conduca a morte, preghi, e Dio gli darà la vita: a quelli, cioè, che commettono un peccato che non conduca a morte. Vi è un peccato che conduce a morte; non è per quello che dico di pregare.

17 A ll unrighteousness is sin, but there is a sin not unto death.

Ogni iniquità è peccato; ma c’è un peccato che non conduce a morte.

18 ¶ We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he that is begotten of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

Noi sappiamo che chiunque è nato da Dio non persiste nel peccare; ma colui che nacque da Dio lo protegge, e il maligno non lo tocca.

19 A nd we know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in wickedness.

Noi sappiamo che siamo da Dio, e che tutto il mondo giace sotto il potere del maligno.

20 B ut we know that the Son of God is come and has given us understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

Sappiamo pure che il Figlio di Dio è venuto e ci ha dato intelligenza per conoscere colui che è il Vero; e noi siamo in colui che è il Vero, cioè nel suo Figlio Gesù Cristo. Egli è il vero Dio e la vita eterna.

21 L ittle children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.
