1 ¶ Thus hath the LORD said unto me, Go and buy thee a linen girdle and put it upon thy loins, and thou shalt not put it in water.

Così mi ha detto il Signore: «Va’, còmprati una cintura di lino, mettitela attorno ai fianchi, ma non la porre nell’acqua».

2 A nd I bought the girdle according to the word of the LORD and put it on my loins.

Così io comprai la cintura, secondo la parola del Signore, e me la misi attorno ai fianchi.

3 A nd the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, saying,

La parola del Signore mi fu indirizzata per la seconda volta, in questi termini:

4 T ake the girdle that thou hast bought, which is upon thy loins, and arise; go to the Euphrates and hide it there in a hole of the rock.

«Prendi la cintura che hai comprata e che hai attorno ai fianchi; va’ verso l’Eufrate e nascondila laggiù, nella fessura di una roccia».

5 S o I went and hid it in the Euphrates, as the LORD commanded me.

Io andai e la nascosi presso l’Eufrate, come il Signore mi aveva comandato.

6 A nd it came to pass after many days that the LORD said unto me, Arise; go to the Euphrates and take from there the girdle, which I commanded thee to hide there.

Dopo molti giorni il Signore mi disse: «Àlzati, va’ verso l’Eufrate e togli di là la cintura che io ti avevo comandato di nascondervi».

7 T hen I went to the Euphrates and dug and took the girdle from the place where I had hid it; and, behold, the girdle was rotted, it was good for nothing.

Io andai verso l’Eufrate, scavai e tolsi la cintura dal luogo dove l’avevo nascosta. Ecco, la cintura era marcita, non era più buona a nulla.

8 T hen the word of the LORD came unto me, saying,

Allora la parola del Signore mi fu rivolta in questi termini:

9 T hus hath the LORD said, After this manner I will cause the pride of Judah to rot and the great pride of Jerusalem.

«Così parla il Signore: “In questo modo io distruggerò l’orgoglio di Giuda e il grande orgoglio di Gerusalemme,

10 T his evil people that refuses to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart and went after other gods to serve them and to worship them shall even be as this girdle, which is good for nothing.

di questo popolo malvagio che rifiuta di ascoltare le mie parole, che cammina seguendo la caparbietà del suo cuore e va dietro ad altri dèi per servirli e per prostrarsi davanti a loro; esso diventerà come questa cintura, che non è più buona a nulla.

11 F or as the girdle cleaves to the loins of a man, so I have caused to cleave unto me the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah, saith the LORD; that they might be unto me for a people and for fame, and for a praise, and for honour; but they did not hear.

Infatti, come la cintura aderisce ai fianchi dell’uomo, così io avevo strettamente unita a me tutta la casa d’Israele e tutta la casa di Giuda”, dice il Signore, “perché fossero mio popolo, mia fama, mia lode, mia gloria; ma essi non hanno voluto dare ascolto”. Avvertimenti

12 ¶ Therefore thou shalt speak unto them this word: Thus hath the LORD God of Israel said, Every bottle shall be filled with wine; and they shall say unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every bottle shall be filled with wine?

«Tu dirai loro questa parola: “Così parla il Signore, Dio d’Israele: ‘Ogni otre sarà riempito di vino’”. E quando essi ti diranno: “Non lo sappiamo noi che ogni otre si riempie di vino?”,

13 T hen shalt thou say unto them, Thus hath the LORD said, Behold, I fill all the inhabitants of this land with drunken ness, even the kings that sit upon David’s throne and the priests and the prophets and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

allora tu dirai loro: “Così parla il Signore: ‘Ecco, io riempirò di ubriachezza tutti gli abitanti di questo paese, i re che siedono sul trono di Davide, i sacerdoti, i profeti e tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme;

14 A nd I will break them one against another, even the fathers with the sons together, saith the LORD; I will not pity nor spare nor have mercy to not destroy them.

li sbatterò l’uno contro l’altro, padri e figli assieme’, dice il Signore; ‘io non risparmierò nessuno; nessuna pietà, nessuna compassione mi impedirà di distruggerli’”».

15 H ear ye and give ear; do not be proud: for the LORD has spoken.

Ascoltate, porgete orecchio! Non insuperbite, perché il Signore parla.

16 G ive glory to the LORD your God before he causes darkness and before your feet stumble in mountains of darkness, and while ye look for light, he turns it into the shadow of death and makes it gross darkness.

Date gloria al Signore, al vostro Dio, prima che egli faccia venire le tenebre; prima che i vostri piedi inciampino sui monti avvolti nel crepuscolo, e voi aspettiate la luce ed egli ne faccia un’ombra di morte, e la muti in oscurità profonda.

17 B ut if ye will not hear this, my soul shall weep in secret because of your pride; and weeping bitterly, my eyes shall be undone in tears because the LORD’s flock was carried away captive.

Ma se voi non date ascolto, io piangerò in segreto a causa del vostro orgoglio; gli occhi miei piangeranno a dirotto, si scioglieranno in lacrime, perché il gregge del Signore sarà deportato.

18 S ay unto the king and to the queen, Humble yourselves, sit down in the dust because the crown of your glory has come down off your heads.

Di’ al re e alla regina: «Sedetevi per terra! perché la vostra gloriosa corona vi cade dalla testa».

19 T he cities of the south were shut up, and no one could open them: Judah was carried away captive; all of it, it was completely carried away captive.

Le città della regione meridionale sono chiuse, non c’è più chi le apra; tutto Giuda è deportato, è condotto in esilio tutto quanto.

20 L ift up your eyes, and behold those that come from the north wind: where is the flock that was given thee, the cattle of thy beauty?

Alzate gli occhi, guardate quelli che vengono dal settentrione; dov’è il gregge, il magnifico gregge, che ti era stato dato?

21 W hat wilt thou say when he shall visit thee? For thou hast taught them to be princes and as head over thee; shall not sorrows take thee as a woman in travail?

Che dirai tu quando egli ti punirà? Ma tu stessa hai insegnato loro – capitani e capi – a dominare su di te. Non ti prenderanno forse i dolori, come prendono la donna che sta per partorire?

22 ¶ When thou shalt say in thine heart, Why do these things come upon me? For the greatness of thine iniquity are thy skirts discovered and thy heels made bare.

Se tu dici in cuor tuo: «Perché m’avvengono queste cose?» Per la grandezza della tua iniquità la tua veste viene strappata e i tuoi calcagni sono colpiti.

23 C an the Ethiopian change his skin or the leopard his spots? Likewise ye also cannot do good, being taught to do evil.

Può un Cusita cambiare la sua pelle o un leopardo le sue macchie? Solo allora anche voi, abituati come siete a fare il male, potrete fare il bene.

24 T herefore I will scatter them as the stubble that passes away by the wind of the wilderness.

«Io li disperderò, come stoppia portata via dal vento del deserto.

25 T his shall be thy lot, the portion of thy measures from me said the LORD; because thou hast forgotten me, and trusted in falsehood.

Questa è la tua sorte, la parte che io ti misuro», dice il Signore, «perché tu mi hai dimenticato e hai riposto la tua fiducia nella menzogna.

26 T herefore I uncovered thy skirts before thy face, and thy shame was manifested.

Io pure solleverò la tua veste sul tuo viso, così si vedrà la tua vergogna.

27 I have seen thine adulteries and thy neighings, the lewdness of thy whoredom upon the hills; in the same field I saw thine abominations. Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem! wilt thou not be made clean at last? How long then shall it be?

Io ho visto le tue abominazioni, i tuoi adultèri, i tuoi nitriti, l’infamia della tua prostituzione sulle colline e per i campi. Guai a te, Gerusalemme! Per quanto tempo ancora non ti purificherai?»
