1 ¶ Do not rejoice, O Israel, for joy, as the peoples; for thou hast gone a whoring from thy God, thou hast loved the salary of a harlot upon every threshing floor.

Non ti rallegrare, o Israele, fino all’esultanza, come i popoli, perché ti sei prostituito, abbandonando il tuo Dio; hai amato il compenso della prostituzione su tutte le aie da frumento!

2 T he threshing floor and the winepress shall not feed them, and the new wine shall fail in her.

L’aia e il frantoio non li nutriranno, e il mosto deluderà la loro speranza.

3 T hey shall not remain in the land of the LORD; but Ephraim shall return to Egypt and to Assyria where they shall eat unclean food.

Essi non abiteranno nel paese del Signore, ma Efraim ritornerà in Egitto e in Assiria, mangeranno cibi impuri.

4 T hey shall not pour out wine unto the LORD, neither shall he take pleasure in their sacrifices; as the bread of mourners shall they be unto them; all that eat thereof shall be polluted; for their bread shall not enter into the house of the LORD because of their soul.

Non faranno più libazioni di vino al Signore, i loro sacrifici non gli saranno graditi; saranno per essi come un cibo di lutto. Chiunque ne mangerà sarà contaminato, poiché il loro pane sarà per loro soltanto e non entrerà nella casa del Signore.

5 W hat will ye do in the solemn day, and in the day of the feast of the LORD?

Che farete nei giorni delle solennità e nei giorni di festa del Signore ?

6 F or, behold, they have left because of the destruction; Egypt shall gather them up, Memphis shall bury them: nettles shall possess in inheritance that which is desirable of their silver; thorns shall grow up in their dwellings.

Essi infatti se ne vanno a motivo della devastazione; l’Egitto li raccoglierà, Menfi li seppellirà. Le loro cose preziose, comprate con denaro, le possederanno le ortiche; le spine cresceranno nelle loro tende.

7 ¶ The days of visitation are come, the days of recompense are come; Israel shall know it; the prophet is a fool, the spiritual man is a fool, for the multitude of thine iniquity, and the great hatred.

I giorni della punizione vengono, vengono i giorni della retribuzione; Israele lo saprà! Il profeta impazzisce, l’uomo ispirato è in delirio a motivo della tua grande iniquità e ostilità.

8 T he watchman of Ephraim regarding my God, the prophet, is a snare of a fowler in all his ways, hatred in the house of his God.

Efraim fa la sentinella davanti al mio Dio; ma il profeta è un laccio di uccellatore su tutte le sue vie, un avversario contro la casa del suo dio.

9 T hey have arrived at the depths, they have corrupted themselves as in the days of Gibeah; therefore he will remember their iniquity, he will visit their sin.

Essi si sono profondamente corrotti come ai giorni di Ghibea! Il Signore si ricorderà della loro iniquità, punirà i loro peccati.

10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the early fruit of the fig tree in her beginning; but they went in unto Baalpeor and separated themselves unto shame and made themselves as abominable as that which they loved.

«Io trovai Israele come uve nel deserto, vidi i vostri padri come i fichi primaticci di un fico al suo primo frutto; ma, non appena giunsero a Baal-Peor, si appartarono per darsi alla vergogna e divennero abominevoli come la cosa che amavano.

11 ¶ As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird, from the birth even from the womb and from the conception.

La gloria di Efraim volerà via come un uccello; non più nascite, non più gravidanze, non più concepimenti!

12 T hough they bring up their sons, yet I will bereave them, that there shall not be a man left; yea, woe also to them when I depart from them!

Anche se allevano i loro figli, io li priverò di essi, in modo che non rimanga loro nessun uomo; sì, guai a loro quando li abbandonerò!

13 E phraim, as I saw Tyre, is planted in a pleasant place; but Ephraim shall bring forth his sons to the murderer.

Io, allungando lo sguardo fino a Tiro, vedo Efraim piantato in luogo gradevole; ma Efraim dovrà condurre i suoi figli a colui che li ucciderà».

14 G ive them, O LORD, that which thou must give them; give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.

Da’ a loro, o Signore! Che darai? Da’ a loro un grembo che abortisce e delle mammelle asciutte.

15 A ll their wickedness was in Gilgal, for there I took a dislike to them; for the wickedness of their doings I will drive them out of my house, I will never love them again: all their princes are disloyal.

«Tutta la loro malvagità è a Ghilgal; là li ho presi in odio. Per la malvagità delle loro azioni io li caccerò dalla mia casa, non li amerò più; tutti i loro prìncipi sono ribelli.

16 E phraim was smitten, their root is dried up; they shall bear no more fruit; even though they bring forth, yet I will slay even the desirable fruit of their womb.

Efraim è colpito, la sua radice è secca; essi non faranno più frutto. Anche se generassero, io farei morire i cari frutti del loro grembo».

17 M y God will cast them away because they did not hearken unto him; and they shall be wanderers among the Gentiles.

Il mio Dio li rigetterà, perché non gli hanno dato ascolto; essi saranno nomadi fra le nazioni.
