1 ¶ In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet, the son of Amoz came unto him and said unto him, Thus saith the LORD, Set thine house in order, for thou shalt die and not live.

In quel tempo Ezechia si ammalò di una malattia che doveva condurlo alla morte. Il profeta Isaia, figlio di Amots, andò da lui e gli disse: «Così parla il Signore: “Da’ i tuoi ordini alla tua casa, perché sei un uomo morto; non guarirai”».

2 T hen Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall and prayed unto the LORD,

Allora Ezechia voltò la faccia verso il muro e pregò il Signore, dicendo:

3 A nd said, Remember now, O LORD, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore.

« Signore ricòrdati, ti prego, che io ho camminato davanti a te con fedeltà e con cuore integro, e che ho fatto ciò che è bene ai tuoi occhi». Ed Ezechia scoppiò in un gran pianto.

4 T hen came the word of the LORD to Isaiah, saying,

Allora la parola del Signore fu rivolta a Isaia in questi termini:

5 G o and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer; I have seen thy tears behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.

«Va’, e di’ a Ezechia: “Così parla il Signore, Dio di Davide, tuo padre: ‘Ho udito la tua preghiera, ho visto le tue lacrime; ecco, io aggiungerò ai tuoi giorni quindici anni;

6 A nd I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria, and I will defend this city.

libererò te e questa città dalle mani del re d’Assiria e proteggerò questa città.

7 A nd this shall be a sign unto thee from the LORD that the LORD will do this thing that he has spoken:

E, da parte del Signore, questo ti servirà di segno che il Signore adempirà la parola da lui pronunciata:

8 B ehold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward. So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.

ecco, io farò retrocedere di dieci gradini l’ombra dei gradini che, per effetto del sole, si è allungata sui dieci gradini di Acaz’”». E il sole retrocedette di dieci gradini sui gradini dov’era disceso.

9 ¶ The writing of Hezekiah king of Judah, when he had been sick and was recovered of his sickness:

Scritto di Ezechia, re di Giuda, in occasione della sua malattia e della guarigione dal suo male.

10 I said in the cutting off of my days; I shall go to the gates of Sheol: I am deprived of the residue of my years.

Io dicevo: «Al declino dei miei giorni devo andarmene alle porte del soggiorno dei morti; io sono privato del resto dei miei anni!»

11 I said, I shall not see JAH, even JAH, in the land of the living; I shall behold man no more with the inhabitants of the world.

Io dicevo: «Non vedrò più il Signore, il Signore, sulla terra dei viventi; fra gli abitanti del mondo dei trapassati, non vedrò più nessun uomo.

12 M y dwelling place has been moved and is removed from me as a shepherd’s tent; he has cut off my life like a weaver: he has cut me off with sickness: between the day and the night thou shalt consume me.

La mia abitazione è divelta e portata via lontano da me, come una tenda di pastore. Io ho arrotolato la mia vita, come fa il tessitore; egli mi taglia via dalla trama; dal giorno alla notte tu mi avrai finito.

13 I reckoned that I had until morning. As a lion, he broke all my bones: from the morning even unto the night thou shalt make an end of me.

Io speravo fino al mattino… ma come un leone, egli mi spezzava tutte le ossa; dal giorno alla notte tu mi avrai finito.

14 L ike a crane or a swallow, so did I complain; I mourned as a dove; I raised my eyes upward, O LORD, I am suffering violence; comfort me.

Io stridevo come la rondine, come la gru, io gemevo come la colomba: i miei occhi erano stanchi di guardare in alto. Signore, mi si fa violenza; sii tu il mio garante».

15 W hat shall I say? He has both spoken unto me, and he himself has done it; I shall walk softly all my years in the bitterness of my soul.

Che dirò? Egli mi ha parlato ed egli l’ha fatto; io camminerò con umiltà durante i miei anni, ricordando l’amarezza della mia anima.

16 O Lord, even unto all those that shall live, in these fifteen years I shall proclaim the life of my spirit in them and how thou caused me to sleep, and afterwards hast given me life.

Signore, mediante queste cose si vive e in tutte queste cose sta la vita del mio spirito; guariscimi dunque e rendimi la vita!

17 B ehold, for peace I had great bitterness; but it has pleased thee to deliver my life from the pit of corruption, for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back.

Ecco, è per la mia pace che io ho avuto grande amarezza; ma tu, nel tuo amore, mi hai liberato dalla fossa della decomposizione, perché ti sei gettato dietro alle spalle tutti i miei peccati.

18 F or the grave shall not confess thee, nor shall death praise thee; nor shall those that go down into the pit wait for thy truth.

Poiché non è il soggiorno dei morti che possa lodarti, non è la morte che ti possa celebrare; quelli che scendono nella tomba non possono più sperare nella tua fedeltà.

19 H e who lives, he who lives, even he shall confess thee, as I do this day; the father to the sons shall make known thy truth.

Il vivente, il vivente è quello che ti loda, come faccio io quest’oggi; il padre farà conoscere ai suoi figli la tua fedeltà.

20 T he LORD is ready to save me: therefore we will sing our psalms in the house of the LORD all the days of our life.

Il Signore mi salva! Suoneremo melodie, tutti i giorni della nostra vita, nella casa del Signore.

21 I saiah then said, Let them take a lump of figs and lay it for a plaster upon the boil and he shall be healed.

Isaia aveva detto: «Si prenda un impiastro di fichi secchi, lo si applichi sull’ulcera e il re guarirà».

22 A nd Hezekiah had said, What is the sign that I shall go up to the house of the LORD?

Ezechia aveva detto: «Da quale segno riconoscerò che io salirò alla casa del Signore ?»
