1 ¶ In the second year of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, Amaziah, the son of Joash, king of Judah, began to reign.

2 H e was twenty-five years old when he began to reign and reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jehoaddan of Jerusalem.

4 W ith all this, the high places were not taken away; as yet the people sacrificed and burnt incense on the high places.

5 A nd as soon as the kingdom was confirmed in his hand, he slew his slaves which had slain the king, his father.

Non appena il potere reale fu assicurato nelle sue mani, egli fece morire quei suoi servitori che avevano ucciso il re suo padre;

6 B ut the sons of those who had slain him he slew not; according unto that which is written in the book of the law of Moses where the LORD commanded, saying, The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, nor the children be put to death for the fathers; but each one shall die for their own sin.

ma non fece morire i figli degli uccisori, secondo quanto è scritto nel libro della legge di Mosè, dove il Signore ha dato questo comandamento: «Non si metteranno a morte i padri per colpa dei figli, né si metteranno a morte i figli per colpa dei padri; ma ognuno sarà messo a morte per il proprio peccato».

7 H e slew of Edom in the valley of salt ten thousand and took Selah by war and called the name of it Joktheel unto this day.

8 ¶ Then Amaziah sent messengers to Jehoash, the son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, saying, Come, let us look each other in the face.

9 A nd Jehoash, the king of Israel, sent to Amaziah, king of Judah, this reply, The thistle that was in Lebanon sent to the cedar that was in Lebanon, saying, Give thy daughter to my son to wife. And the wild beasts that were in Lebanon passed by and trode down the thistle.

Ioas, re d’Israele, mandò a dire ad Amasia, re di Giuda: «Il rovo del Libano mandò a dire al cedro del Libano: “Da’ tua figlia in sposa a mio figlio”. E le bestie selvagge del Libano passarono e calpestarono il rovo.

10 T hou hast indeed smitten Edom, and thy heart has lifted thee up; glory in this, but tarry at home. Why should thou meddle in evil that thou should fall, even thou, and Judah with thee?

Tu hai sconfitto gli Idumei e il tuo cuore ti ha reso orgoglioso. Godi la tua gloria e stattene a casa tua. Perché impegnarti in una disgraziata impresa che porterebbe alla rovina te e il regno di Giuda insieme a te?»

11 B ut Amaziah would not hear. Therefore Jehoash, king of Israel, went up; and he and Amaziah, king of Judah, looked each other in the face at Bethshemesh, which is in Judah.

Ma Amasia non gli volle dar retta. Così Ioas, re d’Israele, marciò contro Amasia; ed egli e Amasia, re di Giuda, si trovarono faccia a faccia a Bet-Semes, nel territorio di Giuda.

12 B ut Judah fell before Israel, and they fled each man to their tents.

13 F urthermore, Jehoash, king of Israel, took Amaziah, king of Judah, the son of Jehoash, the son of Ahaziah, at Bethshemesh and came to Jerusalem and broke down the wall of Jerusalem from the gate of Ephraim unto the corner gate, four hundred cubits.

14 A nd he took all the gold and silver and all the vessels that were found in the house of the LORD and in the treasury of the king’s house and the sons as hostages and returned to Samaria.

E prese tutto l’oro e l’argento e tutti i vasi che si trovavano nella casa del Signore e nei tesori del palazzo del re; prese anche degli ostaggi e se ne tornò a Samaria.

15 ¶ Now the rest of the acts of Jehoash, which he did, and his might and how he fought with Amaziah, king of Judah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

Il resto delle azioni compiute da Ioas, il suo valore e come combatté contro Amasia, re di Giuda, sono cose scritte nel libro delle Cronache dei re d’Israele.

16 A nd Jehoash slept with his fathers and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; and Jeroboam, his son, reigned in his stead.

Ioas si addormentò con i suoi padri e fu sepolto a Samaria con i re d’Israele; e Geroboamo, suo figlio, regnò al suo posto.

17 A nd Amaziah, the son of Joash, king of Judah, lived after the death of Jehoash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, fifteen years.

Amasia, figlio di Ioas, re di Giuda, visse ancora quindici anni dopo la morte di Ioas, figlio di Ioacaz, re d’Israele.

18 A nd the rest of the acts of Amaziah, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

19 N ow they made a conspiracy against him in Jerusalem, and he fled to Lachish; but they sent after him to Lachish and slew him there.

25 H e restored the borders of Israel from the entering of Hamath unto the sea of the plain, according to the word of the LORD God of Israel, which he had spoken by the hand of his slave Jonah, the son of Amittai, the prophet, who was of Gathhepher.

Egli ristabilì i confini d’Israele dall’ingresso di Camat al mare della pianura, come il Signore, Dio d’Israele, aveva detto per mezzo del suo servitore il profeta Giona, figlio di Amittai, che era di Gat-Efer.

26 F or the LORD saw the affliction of Israel, that it was very bitter, for there was no one shut up nor any left nor any to help Israel;

Il Signore aveva visto che l’afflizione d’Israele era amarissima, che schiavi e liberi erano ridotti all’estremo e che non c’era più nessuno che soccorresse Israele.

27 a nd the LORD had not yet determined to blot out the name of Israel from under heaven; therefore, he saved them by the hand of Jeroboam, the son of Joash.

Il Signore non aveva parlato ancora di cancellare il nome d’Israele da sotto al cielo; quindi li salvò, per mezzo di Geroboamo, figlio di Ioas.

28 N ow the rest of the acts of Jeroboam and all that he did and his might, how he warred and how he recovered Damascus and Hamath to Judah in Israel, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel?

29 A nd Jeroboam slept with his fathers, with the kings of Israel, and Zachariah, his son, reigned in his stead.
