1 ¶ And the king sent, and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

Allora il re mandò a chiamare presso di sé tutti gli anziani di Giuda e di Gerusalemme.

2 A nd the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests and the prophets and all the people, from the smallest to the greatest; and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which had been found in the house of the LORD.

Il re salì alla casa del Signore, con tutti gli uomini di Giuda, tutti gli abitanti di Gerusalemme, i sacerdoti, i profeti e tutto il popolo, piccoli e grandi, e lesse in loro presenza tutte le parole del libro del patto, che era stato trovato nella casa del Signore.

3 A nd the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the LORD, that they would walk after the LORD and keep his commandments and his testimonies and his statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in that book. And all the people confirmed the covenant.

Il re, stando in piedi sul palco, fece un patto davanti al Signore, impegnandosi a seguire il Signore, a osservare i suoi comandamenti, i suoi precetti e le sue leggi con tutto il cuore e con tutta l’anima, per mettere in pratica le parole di questo patto, scritte in questo libro. Tutto il popolo acconsentì al patto.

4 ¶ And the king commanded Hilkiah, the high priest, and the priests of the second order and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that had been made for Baal and for the grove and for all the host of heaven; and he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and caused their dust to be carried unto Bethel.

Il re ordinò al sommo sacerdote Chilchia, ai sacerdoti del secondo ordine e ai custodi della porta d’ingresso, di togliere dal tempio del Signore tutti gli arredi che erano stati fatti per Baal, per Astarte e per tutto l’esercito celeste; li bruciò fuori da Gerusalemme, nei campi del Chidron, e ne portò le ceneri a Betel.

5 A nd he put down the religious persons whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah and in the places round about Jerusalem; likewise, those that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.

Destituì i sacerdoti idolatri che i re di Giuda avevano istituito per offrire profumi negli alti luoghi delle città di Giuda e nei dintorni di Gerusalemme, e quelli pure che offrivano profumi a Baal, al sole, alla luna, ai segni dello zodiaco e a tutto l’esercito del cielo.

6 A nd he brought out the graven image of the grove from the house of the LORD outside Jerusalem unto the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron and stamped it small to powder and cast the powder of it upon the graves of the sons of the people.

Tolse dalla casa del Signore l’idolo di Astarte, che trasportò fuori da Gerusalemme verso il torrente Chidron; lo bruciò presso il torrente Chidron, lo ridusse in cenere e ne gettò la cenere sulle tombe della gente del popolo.

7 H e likewise broke down the houses of the male cult prostitutes that were by the house of the LORD where the women wove hangings for the grove.

Demolì le case di quelli che si prostituivano, le quali si trovavano nella casa del Signore, e dove le donne tessevano tende per Astarte.

8 A nd he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah and defiled the high places where the priests had burned incense, from Geba to Beersheba, and broke down the high places of the gates that were in the entering in of the gate of Joshua, the governor of the city, which were on a man’s left hand at the gate of the city.

Fece venire tutti i sacerdoti delle città di Giuda, profanò gli alti luoghi dove i sacerdoti avevano offerto incenso, da Gheba a Beer-Sceba, e abbatté i templi delle porte della città: quello che era all’ingresso della porta di Giosuè, governatore della città, e quello che era a sinistra della porta della città.

9 N evertheless, the priests of the high places did not come up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, but they did eat of the unleavened bread among their brethren.

Quei sacerdoti degli alti luoghi non salivano a sacrificare sull’altare del Signore a Gerusalemme: mangiavano però pane azzimo in mezzo ai loro fratelli.

10 A nd he defiled Tophet, which is in the valley of the sons of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.

Profanò Tofet nella valle di Ben-Innom, affinché nessuno potesse più far passare per il fuoco suo figlio o sua figlia in onore di Moloc.

11 A nd he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun, at the entrance of the house of the LORD, by the chamber of Nathanmelech, the chamberlain who was in charge of the Parbar, and burned the chariots of the sun with fire.

Soppresse i cavalli che i re di Giuda avevano consacrati al sole, all’ingresso della casa del Signore, presso l’abitazione dell’eunuco Netan-Melec, che era nel recinto del tempio; e diede alle fiamme i carri del sole.

12 A nd the king cast down the altars that were on the top of the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the LORD and made haste and cast the dust of them into the brook Kidron.

Il re demolì gli altari che erano sulla terrazza della camera superiore di Acaz, fatti dai re di Giuda, e gli altari fatti da Manasse nei due cortili della casa del Signore; e, dopo averli fatti a pezzi e tolti di là, ne gettò la polvere nel torrente Chidron.

13 L ikewise, the king defiled the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mount of corruption, which Solomon, the king of Israel, had built unto Ashtoreth, the abomination of the Zidonians, and unto Chemosh, the abomination of the Moabites, and unto Milcom, the abomination of the sons of Ammon.

Il re profanò gli alti luoghi che erano di fronte a Gerusalemme, a destra del monte della perdizione, e che Salomone, re d’Israele, aveva eretti in onore di Astarte, l’abominevole divinità dei Sidoni, di Chemos, l’abominevole divinità di Moab, e di Milcom, l’abominevole divinità degli Ammoniti.

14 A nd he broke the images in pieces and cut down the groves and filled their places with the bones of men.

Spezzò le statue, abbatté gli idoli di Astarte e riempì d’ossa umane quei luoghi.

15 L ikewise, the altar that was at Bethel and the high place which Jeroboam, the son of Nebat, who caused Israel to sin, had made: both that altar and the high place he broke down and burned the high place and stamped it small to powder and burned the grove.

Abbatté pure l’altare che stava a Betel e l’alto luogo, costruito da Geroboamo, figlio di Nebat, il quale aveva fatto peccare Israele. Bruciò l’alto luogo e lo ridusse in polvere, e bruciò l’idolo di Astarte.

16 A nd as Josiah turned himself, he spied the sepulchres that were there in the mount and sent and took the bones out of the sepulchres and burned them upon the altar and polluted it, according to the word of the LORD which the man of God proclaimed, who had proclaimed these words.

Poi Giosia, voltatosi, vide le tombe che stavano là sul monte; mandò a prelevare le ossa di quelle tombe e le bruciò sull’altare, profanandolo, secondo la parola del Signore pronunciata dall’uomo di Dio, che aveva annunciato queste cose.

17 T hen he said, What title is this that I see? And the men of the city told him, It is the sepulchre of the man of God, who came from Judah and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of Bethel.

Poi disse: «Che monumento è quello che io vedo laggiù?» La gente della città rispose: «È la tomba dell’uomo di Dio, che venne da Giuda, e che proclamò contro l’altare di Betel queste cose che tu hai fatte».

18 A nd he said, Let him alone; let no one move his bones. So his bones were saved along with the bones of the prophet that had come out of Samaria.

Egli disse: «Lasciatelo stare; nessuno rimuova le sue ossa!» Così le sue ossa furono conservate con le ossa del profeta ch’era venuto da Samaria.

19 A nd all the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke the LORD to anger, Josiah took away and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in Bethel.

Giosia fece anche sparire tutti i templi degli alti luoghi che erano nella città di Samaria e che i re d’Israele avevano fatti per provocare lo sdegno del Signore, e ne fece esattamente quel che aveva fatto a Betel.

20 A nd he slew all the priests of the high places that were there upon the altars and burned men’s bones upon them and returned to Jerusalem.

Fece uccidere sugli altari tutti i sacerdoti degli alti luoghi che vi si trovavano, e su quegli altari bruciò ossa umane. Poi tornò a Gerusalemme. Celebrazione della Pasqua

21 T hen the king commanded all the people, saying, Make the passover unto the LORD your God, as it is written in the book of this covenant.

Il re diede a tutto il popolo quest’ordine: «Celebrate la Pasqua in onore del Signore vostro Dio, come sta scritto in questo libro del patto».

22 S uch a passover had not been made since the days of the judges that judged Israel, nor in all the days of the kings of Israel, nor of the kings of Judah.

Infatti la Pasqua non era stata celebrata così dal tempo dei giudici che avevano governato Israele, e per tutto il tempo dei re d’Israele e dei re di Giuda;

23 I n the year eighteen of King Josiah, this passover was made unto the LORD in Jerusalem.

ma nel diciottesimo anno del re Giosia quella Pasqua fu celebrata, in onore del Signore, a Gerusalemme.

24 I n the same manner Josiah burned the spiritists, the diviners, the teraphim, the idols, and all the abominations that were spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, that he might confirm the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had found in the house of the LORD.

Giosia fece anche sparire gli evocatori di spiriti e gli indovini, gli idoli domestici, gli idoli e tutte le abominazioni che si vedevano nel paese di Giuda e a Gerusalemme, per mettere in pratica le parole della legge, scritte nel libro che il sacerdote Chilchia aveva trovato nella casa del Signore.

25 ¶ There was no king before him that converted like this to the LORD with all his heart and all his soul and all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither did any like him arise after him.

Prima di Giosia non c’è stato re che come lui si sia convertito al Signore con tutto il suo cuore, con tutta l’anima sua e con tutta la sua forza, seguendo in tutto la legge di Mosè; e, dopo di lui, non ne è sorto uno simile.

26 E ven with all this the LORD did not turn from the fierceness of his great wrath, with which his anger was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations with which Manasseh had provoked him to wrath.

Tuttavia il Signore non desistette dall’ira ardente che provava contro il regno di Giuda, a causa di tutte le offese con cui Manasse aveva provocato la sua ira.

27 A nd the LORD said, I must also remove Judah out of my sight as I have removed Israel, and I must reject this city Jerusalem which I had chosen and the house of which I said, My name shall be there.

Il Signore disse: «Farò sparire anche il regno di Giuda dalla mia presenza come ho fatto con il regno d’Israele; e respingerò Gerusalemme, la città che mi ero scelta, e la casa della quale avevo detto: “Là sarà il mio nome”».

28 N ow the rest of the acts of Josiah and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

Il rimanente delle azioni di Giosia, tutto quello che fece, è scritto nel libro delle Cronache dei re di Giuda.

29 I n his days Pharaohnechoh, king of Egypt, went up against the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates; and King Josiah went against him; but as soon as he saw him, he slew him at Megiddo.

Durante il suo regno, il faraone Neco, re d’Egitto, andò a soccorrere il re d’Assiria, verso il fiume Eufrate. Il re Giosia lo affrontò e il faraone, al primo scontro, lo uccise a Meghiddo.

30 A nd his slaves carried him in a chariot dead from Megiddo and brought him to Jerusalem and buried him in his own sepulchre. Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz, the son of Josiah, and anointed him and made him king in his father’s stead.

I suoi servitori lo portarono via morto sopra un carro, da Meghiddo a Gerusalemme, dove lo seppellirono nella sua tomba. E il popolo del paese prese Ioacaz, figlio di Giosia, lo unse e lo fece re al posto di suo padre. Ioacaz, re di Giuda

31 ¶ Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Hamutal, the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.

Ioacaz aveva ventitré anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò tre mesi a Gerusalemme. Il nome di sua madre era Camutal, figlia di Geremia, da Libna.

32 A nd he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done.

Egli fece ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, in tutto e per tutto come avevano fatto i suoi padri.

33 A nd Pharaohnechoh put him in bonds at Riblah in the land of Hamath, as he was reigning in Jerusalem; and put the land to a tribute of one hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.

Il faraone Neco lo mise in catene a Ribla, nel paese di Camat, perché non regnasse più a Gerusalemme; e impose al paese un tributo di cento talenti d’argento e di un talento d’oro.

34 T hen Pharaohnechoh made Eliakim, the son of Josiah, king in the place of Josiah his father and changed his name to Jehoiakim and took Jehoahaz and carried him to Egypt, and he died there.

Il faraone Neco fece re Eliachim, figlio di Giosia, al posto di Giosia suo padre, e gli cambiò il nome in quello di Ioiachim; poi prese Ioacaz e lo portò in Egitto, dove morì.

35 A nd Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh, but he caused the land to be valued to give this money according to the commandment of Pharaoh; he exacted the silver and the gold of the people of the land, of each one according to the estimation of his worth, to give it unto Pharaohnechoh.

Ioiachim diede al faraone l’argento e l’oro; ma per pagare quel denaro secondo l’ordine del faraone, tassò il paese, ciascuno in proporzione alle sue proprietà. Così raccolse dal popolo del paese l’argento e l’oro da dare al faraone Neco. Ioiachim, re di Giuda; invasione di Nabucodonosor

36 J ehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Zebudah, the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah.

Ioiachim aveva venticinque anni quando cominciò a regnare, e regnò undici anni a Gerusalemme. Il nome di sua madre era Zebudda, figlia di Pedaia, da Ruma.

37 A nd he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done.

Egli fece ciò che è male agli occhi del Signore, in tutto e per tutto come avevano fatto i suoi padri.
