1 ¶ Cast thy bread upon the waters, for thou shalt find it after many days.

Getta il tuo pane sulle acque, perché dopo molto tempo lo ritroverai.

2 G ive a portion to seven and even to eight, for thou dost not know what evil shall come upon the earth.

Fanne parte a sette, e anche a otto, perché tu non sai che male può avvenire sulla terra.

3 I f the clouds are full of rain, they shall empty themselves upon the earth; and if the tree falls toward the south or toward the north, in the place where the tree falls, there it shall remain.

Quando le nuvole sono piene di pioggia, la riversano sulla terra; e se un albero cade verso il sud o verso il nord, dove cade, là rimane.

4 H e that observes the wind shall not sow, and he that regards the clouds shall not reap.

Chi bada al vento non seminerà; chi guarda alle nuvole non mieterà.

5 A s thou dost not know what is the way of the spirit nor how the bones grow in the womb of her that is with child, even so thou dost not know the works of God who makes all.

Come tu non conosci la via del vento, né come si formino le ossa in seno alla donna incinta, così non conosci l’opera di Dio, che fa tutto.

6 I n the morning sow thy seed, and in the evening withhold not thine hand; for thou knowest not which shall prosper, either this or that or whether they both shall be equally good.

Fin dal mattino semina la tua semenza e la sera non dar posa alle tue mani; poiché tu non sai quale dei due lavori riuscirà meglio: se questo o quello, o se ambedue saranno ugualmente buoni.

7 ¶ Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun,

La luce è dolce, ed è cosa piacevole agli occhi vedere il sole.

8 b ut if a man lives many years and rejoices in them all; yet if afterwards he remembers the days of darkness, for they shall be many, he shall say that everything that shall have happened to him is vanity.

Se dunque un uomo vive molti anni, si rallegri tutti questi anni e pensi ai giorni delle tenebre, che saranno molti; tutto quello che avverrà è vanità.

9 R ejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth and walk in the ways of thine heart and in the sight of thine eyes; but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

Rallègrati pure, o giovane, durante la tua adolescenza, e gioisca pure il tuo cuore durante i giorni della tua giovinezza; cammina pure nelle vie dove ti conduce il cuore e seguendo gli sguardi dei tuoi occhi; ma sappi che, per tutte queste cose, Dio ti chiamerà in giudizio!

10 T herefore remove sorrow from thy heart and put away evil from thy flesh; for childhood and youth are vanity.

Bandisci dal tuo cuore la tristezza e allontana dalla tua carne la sofferenza; poiché la giovinezza e l’aurora sono vanità.
