1 ¶ And it came to pass when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes and covered himself with sackcloth and went into the house of the LORD.

Quando il re Ezechia ebbe udito questo, si stracciò le vesti, si coprì di un sacco ed entrò nella casa del Signore.

2 A nd he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe and the elders of the priests covered with sackcloth unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

Mandò Eliachim, sovrintendente del palazzo, Sebna, il segretario, e i più anziani sacerdoti, coperti di sacchi, dal profeta Isaia, figlio di Amots.

3 A nd they said unto him, Thus saith Hezekiah, This day is a day of trouble and of rebuke and of blasphemy, for the sons are come to the breaking of the water, and there is no strength in her who is to bring them forth.

Essi gli dissero: «Così parla Ezechia: “Oggi è giorno d’angoscia, di castigo e di disonore; poiché i figli stanno per uscire dal seno materno, però manca la forza per partorirli.

4 I t may be the LORD thy God will hear the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master has sent to blaspheme the living God and to reprove with the words which the LORD thy God has heard; therefore lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is still left.

Forse il Signore, il tuo Dio, ha udito le parole di Rabsachè, che il re d’Assiria, suo signore, ha mandato per insultare il Dio vivente; e forse il Signore, il tuo Dio, punirà le parole che ha udite. Rivolgigli dunque una preghiera in favore del resto del popolo che rimane ancora”».

5 S o the slaves of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

I servi del re Ezechia andarono dunque da Isaia.

6 A nd Isaiah said unto them, Thus shall ye say unto your master, Thus saith the LORD, Do not be afraid of the words that thou hast heard, with which the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me.

E Isaia disse loro: «Così direte al vostro signore: “Così dice il Signore: ‘Non temere le parole che hai udite, con le quali i servi del re d’Assiria mi hanno insultato.

7 B ehold, that I am sending a spirit in him, and he shall hear a rumour and return to his own land; and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.

Ecco, io metterò in lui uno spirito tale che, all’udire una certa notizia, egli tornerà nel suo paese; e io lo farò morire di spada nel suo paese’”».

8 ¶ So Rabshakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah, for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

Rabsachè tornò dal re d’Assiria e lo trovò che assediava Libna, poiché aveva saputo che il suo signore era partito da Lachis.

9 A nd he heard say concerning Tirhakah king of Ethiopia, He is come forth to make war with thee. And when he heard it, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,

Il re ricevette questa notizia concernente Tiraca, re d’Etiopia: «Egli si è mosso per farti guerra». Udito questo, inviò dei messaggeri a Ezechia, con questo messaggio:

10 T hus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying, Do not let thy God, in whom thou dost trust, deceive thee, saying, Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

«Dite così a Ezechia, re di Giuda: “Il tuo Dio, nel quale confidi, non t’inganni dicendo: ‘Gerusalemme non sarà data nelle mani del re d’Assiria’.

11 B ehold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands by destroying them utterly, and shalt thou be delivered?

Ecco, tu hai udito quello che i re d’Assiria hanno fatto a tutti i paesi, come li hanno distrutti; e tu riusciresti a scampare?

12 H ave the gods of the Gentiles delivered those whom my fathers have destroyed, as Gozan and Haran and Rezeph and the sons of Eden which were in Telassar?

Gli dèi delle nazioni che i miei padri distrussero, gli dèi di Gozan, di Caran, di Resef e dei figli di Eden che sono a Telassar, riuscirono forse a liberarle?

13 W here is the king of Hamath and the king of Arphad and the king of the city of Sepharvaim Hena, and Ivah?

Dove sono il re di Camat, il re di Arpad e il re della città di Sefarvaim, di Ena e d’Ivva?”».

14 A nd Hezekiah took the letters from the hand of the messengers and read them; and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD and spread them before the LORD.

Ezechia prese la lettera dalle mani dei messaggeri e la lesse; poi salì alla casa del Signore e la spiegò davanti al Signore.

15 A nd Hezekiah prayed unto the LORD, saying,

Ezechia pregò il Signore, dicendo:

16 O LORD of the hosts, God of Israel, that dwellest between the cherubim, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; thou hast made the heavens and earth.

« Signore degli eserciti, Dio d’Israele, che siedi sopra i cherubini! Tu solo sei il Dio di tutti i regni della terra; tu hai fatto il cielo e la terra.

17 I ncline thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open thine eyes, O LORD, and see and hear all the words of Sennacherib, who has sent his messengers to blaspheme the living God.

Signore, porgi l’orecchio e ascolta! Signore, apri i tuoi occhi e guarda! Ascolta tutte le parole che Sennacherib ha mandate per insultare il Dio vivente!

18 O f a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the nations and their countries

È vero, Signore: i re d’Assiria hanno devastato tutte quelle nazioni e i loro paesi,

19 a nd have cast their gods into the fire, for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.

e hanno dato alle fiamme i loro dèi, perché quelli non erano dèi ma opera di mano d’uomo, legno e pietra; per questo li hanno distrutti.

20 N ow therefore, O LORD our God, save us from his hand that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the LORD, even thou only.

Ma ora, Signore, Dio nostro, liberaci dalle mani di Sennacherib, affinché tutti i regni della terra conoscano che tu solo sei il Signore!»

21 ¶ Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent unto Hezekiah, saying, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria:

Allora Isaia, figlio di Amots, mandò a dire a Ezechia: «Così dice il Signore, Dio d’Israele: Ho udito la preghiera che mi hai rivolta riguardo a Sennacherib, re d’Assiria.

22 T his is the word which the LORD has spoken concerning him, Has he despised thee? Has he laughed thee to scorn O virgin daughter of Zion? Has he shaken his head behind thy back O daughter of Jerusalem?

Questa è la parola che il Signore ha pronunciata contro di lui: “La vergine, figlia di Sion, ti disprezza e si fa beffe di te; la figlia di Gerusalemme scrolla il capo dietro a te.

23 W hom hast thou reproached and blasphemed? and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice and lifted up thine eyes on high? even against the Holy One of Israel.

Chi hai insultato e oltraggiato? Contro chi hai alzato la voce e levati in alto i tuoi occhi? Contro il Santo d’Israele.

24 B y the hand of thy slaves thou hast reproached the Lord, and hast said, By the multitude of my chariots I shall come up to the height of the mountains to the sides of Lebanon, and I will cut down the tall cedars thereof and the choice fir trees thereof; and I will enter into the height of his border and the forest of his Carmel.

Per bocca dei tuoi servi tu hai insultato il Signore, e hai detto: ‘Con la moltitudine dei miei carri io sono salito in cima alle montagne, sui fianchi del Libano; io abbatterò i suoi cedri più alti e i suoi cipressi più belli; arriverò al suo più remoto nascondiglio, alla sua magnifica foresta.

25 I have dug and drunk water; and with the sole of my feet shall I dry up all the rivers of sustenance.

Io, io ho scavato e bevuto dell’acqua; con la pianta dei miei piedi prosciugherò tutti i fiumi d’Egitto’.

26 H ast thou not heard long ago how I have done it and of ancient times that I have formed it? Now I have brought it to pass, that thou should be to lay waste defenced cities into ruinous heaps.

Non l’hai udito? Da lungo tempo ho preparato questo; da tempi antichi ne ho ideato il progetto; ora ho fatto in modo che si compia: che tu riduca città forti in monti di rovine.

27 A nd their inhabitants, of little strength, dismayed and confounded shall be as the grass of the field and as the green shrub as the grass on the housetops, that before it comes to maturity it is dried up.

I loro abitanti, privi di forza, sono spaventati e confusi; sono come l’erba dei campi, come la tenera verdura, come l’erbetta dei tetti, come grano riarso prima che metta la spiga.

28 I have understood thy state, thy going out and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.

Ma io so quando ti siedi, quando esci, quando entri e quando t’infuri contro di me.

29 B ecause thy rage against me, and thy tumult, is come up into my ears, therefore I will put my hook in thy nose and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou didst come.

Poiché ti sei infuriato contro di me, e perché la tua insolenza è salita alle mie orecchie, io ti metterò il mio anello al naso e il mio morso in bocca e ti farò tornare per la via da cui sei venuto”.

30 A nd this shall be a sign unto thee, Ye shall eat this year such as grows of itself; and the second year that which springs of the same: and in the third year ye shall sow and shall reap and shall plant vineyards and shall eat the fruit thereof.

E questo, Ezechia, ti servirà di segno: quest’anno si mangerà il frutto del grano caduto; il secondo anno, quello che cresce da sé; ma il terzo anno seminerete e mieterete; pianterete vigne e ne mangerete il frutto.

31 A nd the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward and bear fruit upward:

E il resto della casa di Giuda che sarà scampato metterà ancora radici in basso e porterà frutto in alto.

32 F or out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant and from Mount Zion shall come an escape; the zeal of the LORD of the hosts shall do this.

Poiché da Gerusalemme uscirà un residuo, e dal monte di Sion usciranno degli scampati. Lo zelo del Signore degli eserciti farà questo.

33 T herefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, He shall not come into this city, nor shoot an arrow there, nor come before it with shields, nor cast a bank against it.

Perciò così parla il Signore riguardo al re d’Assiria: “Egli non entrerà in questa città e non vi lancerà freccia; non l’assalirà con scudi e non alzerà terrapieno contro di essa.

34 B y the way that he came, by the same shall he return and shall not come into this city, saith the LORD.

Egli se ne tornerà per la via da cui è venuto, e non entrerà in questa città”, dice il Signore.

35 F or I will defend this city to save it for my own sake and for my slave David’s sake.

“Io proteggerò questa città per salvarla, per amore di me stesso e per amore di Davide, mio servo”».

36 T hen the angel of the LORD went forth and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and eighty-five thousand; and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

L’angelo del Signore uscì e colpì, nel campo degli Assiri, centottantacinquemila uomini; e quando la gente si alzò la mattina, eccovi tanti cadaveri.

37 S o Sennacherib king of Assyria departed and went and returned and dwelt at Nineveh.

Allora Sennacherib, re d’Assiria, tolse l’accampamento, partì e tornò a Ninive, dove rimase.

38 A nd it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sharezer his sons smote him with the sword; and they escaped into the land of Ararat and Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead.

Mentre stava prostrato nella casa di Nisroc, suo dio, Adrammelec e Sareser, suoi figli, lo uccisero a colpi di spada e si rifugiarono nel paese di Ararat. Ed Esaraddon, suo figlio, regnò al suo posto.
