1 ¶ Now these are the Gentiles which the LORD left, to prove Israel with them, even as many of Israel as had not known all the wars of Canaan;

Voici les nations que l'Éternel laissa pour éprouver par elles Israël, tous ceux qui n'avaient pas connu toutes les guerres de Canaan.

2 h e left them only that the generations of the sons of Israel might know, and to teach them war, only for those that had known nothing before:

Il voulait seulement que les générations des enfants d'Israël connussent et apprissent la guerre, ceux qui ne l'avaient pas connue auparavant.

3 n amely, five cardinals of the Philistines and all the Canaanites and the Sidonians and the Hivites that dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baalhermon unto the entering in of Hamath.

Ces nations étaient: les cinq princes des Philistins, tous les Cananéens, les Sidoniens, et les Héviens qui habitaient la montagne du Liban, depuis la montagne de Baal Hermon jusqu'à l'entrée de Hamath.

4 T hese, therefore, were left to prove Israel by them, to know whether they would hearken unto the commandments of the LORD, which he had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses.

Ces nations servirent à mettre Israël à l'épreuve, afin que l'Éternel sût s'ils obéiraient aux commandements qu'il avait prescrits à leurs pères par Moïse.

5 A nd as the sons of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites,

Et les enfants d'Israël habitèrent au milieu des Cananéens, des Héthiens, des Amoréens, des Phéréziens, des Héviens et des Jébusiens;

6 t hey took their daughters to be their wives and gave their daughters to their sons and served their gods.

ils prirent leurs filles pour femmes, ils donnèrent à leurs fils leurs propres filles, et ils servirent leurs dieux.

7 A nd the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the LORD and forgot the LORD their God and served the Baalim and the groves.

Les enfants d'Israël firent ce qui déplaît à l'Éternel, ils oublièrent l'Éternel, et ils servirent les Baals et les idoles.

8 ¶ Therefore the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia, and the sons of Israel served Chushanrishathaim eight years.

La colère de l'Éternel s'enflamma contre Israël, et il les vendit entre les mains de Cuschan Rischeathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie. Et les enfants d'Israël furent asservis huit ans à Cuschan Rischeathaïm.

9 A nd when the sons of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised up a saviour to the sons of Israel, who saved them, even Othniel, the son of Kenaz, Caleb’s younger brother.

Les enfants d'Israël crièrent à l'Éternel, et l'Éternel leur suscita un libérateur qui les délivra, Othniel, fils de Kenaz, frère cadet de Caleb.

10 A nd the Spirit of the LORD came upon him, and he judged Israel and went out to war; and the LORD delivered Chushanrishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand, and his hand prevailed against Chushanrishathaim.

L'esprit de l'Éternel fut sur lui. Il devint juge en Israël, et il partit pour la guerre. L'Éternel livra entre ses mains Cuschan Rischeathaïm, roi de Mésopotamie, et sa main fut puissante contre Cuschan Rischeathaïm.

11 A nd the land had rest forty years. And Othniel, the son of Kenaz, died.

Le pays fut en repos pendant quarante ans. Et Othniel, fils de Kenaz, mourut.

12 ¶ And the sons of Israel did evil again in the sight of the LORD, and the LORD strengthened Eglon, the king of Moab, against Israel because they had done evil in the sight of the LORD.

Les enfants d'Israël firent encore ce qui déplaît à l'Éternel; et l'Éternel fortifia Églon, roi de Moab, contre Israël, parce qu'ils avaient fait ce qui déplaît à l'Éternel.

13 A nd he gathered unto him the sons of Ammon and of Amalek and went and smote Israel and took the city of palm trees.

Églon réunit à lui les fils d'Ammon et les Amalécites, et il se mit en marche. Il battit Israël, et ils s'emparèrent de la ville des palmiers.

14 S o the sons of Israel served Eglon the king of Moab eighteen years.

Et les enfants d'Israël furent asservis dix-huit ans à Églon, roi de Moab.

15 B ut when the sons of Israel cried unto the LORD, the LORD raised them up a saviour, Ehud, the son of Gera, a son of Jemini, a man, who had his right hand impeded, and by him the sons of Israel sent a present unto Eglon, the king of Moab.

Les enfants d'Israël crièrent à l'Éternel, et l'Éternel leur suscita un libérateur, Éhud, fils de Guéra, Benjamite, qui ne se servait pas de la main droite. Les enfants d'Israël envoyèrent par lui un présent à Églon, roi de Moab.

16 B ut Ehud had made himself a two-edged sword of a cubit length, and he girded it under his clothing upon his right thigh.

Éhud se fit une épée à deux tranchants, longue d'une coudée, et il la ceignit sous ses vêtements, au côté droit.

17 A nd he brought the present unto Eglon, king of Moab, and Eglon was a very fat man.

Il offrit le présent à Églon, roi de Moab: or Églon était un homme très gras.

18 A nd when he had offered the present, he sent away the people that had brought the present.

Lorsqu'il eut achevé d'offrir le présent, il renvoya les gens qui l'avaient apporté.

19 B ut he, himself turned again from the graven images that were by Gilgal, and said, I have a secret word for thee, O king, who then said, Keep silence. And all that stood by him went out from him.

Il revint lui-même depuis les carrières près de Guilgal, et il dit: O roi! j'ai quelque chose de secret à te dire. Le roi dit: Silence! Et tous ceux qui étaient auprès de lui sortirent.

20 A nd Ehud came unto him, and he was sitting in a summer parlour, which he had for himself alone. And Ehud said, I have a word from God unto thee. Then he arose out of his seat.

Éhud l'aborda comme il était assis seul dans sa chambre d'été, et il dit: J'ai une parole de Dieu pour toi. Églon se leva de son siège.

21 B ut Ehud put forth his left hand and took the sword from his right thigh and thrust it into Eglon’s belly;

Alors Éhud avança la main gauche, tira l'épée de son côté droit, et la lui enfonça dans le ventre.

22 i n such a manner that the haft also went in after the blade, and the fat closed upon the blade so that he could not draw the dagger out of his belly, and the excrement came out.

La poignée même entra après la lame, et la graisse se referma autour de la lame; car il ne retira pas du ventre l'épée, qui sortit par derrière.

23 T hen Ehud went forth through the porch and shut the doors of the parlour upon him and locked them.

Éhud sortit par le portique, ferma sur lui les portes de la chambre haute, et tira le verrou.

24 W hen he was gone out, his slaves came; and when they saw that the doors of the parlour were locked, they said, Peradventure he covers his feet in his summer chamber.

Quand il fut sorti, les serviteurs du roi vinrent et regardèrent; et voici, les portes de la chambre haute étaient fermées au verrou. Ils dirent: Sans doute il se couvre les pieds dans la chambre d'été.

25 A nd having waited until they were confounded and he had not opened the doors of the parlour; therefore, they took a key and opened them; and, behold, their lord was fallen down dead on the earth.

Ils attendirent longtemps; et comme il n'ouvrait pas les portes de la chambre haute, ils prirent la clé et ouvrirent, et voici, leur maître était mort, étendu par terre.

26 B ut while they had waited, Ehud escaped and passed beyond the graven images and escaped unto Seirath.

Pendant leurs délais, Éhud prit la fuite, dépassa les carrières, et se sauva à Seïra.

27 A nd as he entered in, he blew the shofar in the mountain of Ephraim, and the sons of Israel went down with him from the mount, and he before them.

Dès qu'il fut arrivé, il sonna de la trompette dans la montagne d'Éphraïm. Les enfants d'Israël descendirent avec lui de la montagne, et il se mit à leur tête.

28 T hen he said unto them, Follow after me, for the LORD has delivered your enemies, the Moabites, into your hands. And they went down after him and took the fords of the Jordan towards Moab and did not let anyone pass.

Il leur dit: Suivez-moi, car l'Éternel a livré entre vos mains les Moabites, vos ennemis. Ils descendirent après lui, s'emparèrent des gués du Jourdain vis-à-vis de Moab, et ne laissèrent passer personne.

29 A nd they slew of Moab at that time about ten thousand men, all fat, and all men of war, and there escaped not a man.

Ils battirent dans ce temps-là environ dix mille hommes de Moab, tous robustes, tous vaillants, et pas un n'échappa.

30 S o Moab was subjected that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest eighty years.

En ce jour, Moab fut humilié sous la main d'Israël. Et le pays fut en repos pendant quatre-vingts ans.

31 ¶ And after him was Shamgar, the son of Anath, who slew of the Philistines six hundred men with an ox goad, and he also saved Israel.

Après lui, il y eut Schamgar, fils d'Anath. Il battit six cents hommes des Philistins avec un aiguillon à boeufs. Et lui aussi fut un libérateur d'Israël.
